samlcfc Posted 5 November 2009 Posted 5 November 2009 Anyway the last time there was an optimeter vote record we played superb at QPR.So surely 167 votes this time and the performance will be even better against West Brom. can't argue with that logic.
leicesterfox86 Posted 6 November 2009 Posted 6 November 2009 Be happy with a draw I reckon we have to go for the win. This football blogger looks the Championship games this weekend with particular focus on our game and he seems convinced that we can turn them over. Like he says, we are bang in form and they are inconsistent. One thing for sure is that it is the biggest game of the weekend! Come on boys!
maddog Posted 6 November 2009 Author Posted 6 November 2009 Cox goes head-to-head with Fryatt Albion striker Simon Cox will go head-to-head with Matty Fryatt admitting the Leicester marksman has shown the way to make the step up to the Championship.Had things worked out differently, Cox and Fryatt, who both netted 32 goals last season, could have been lining up together for the Foxes tomorrow. Leicester could not afford Cox and the 22-year-old will be instead leading the Baggies attack instead as they look to gun down Nigel Pearson’s side. But Cox admits that former Walsall player Fryatt has blazed a trail for last season’s successful League One hitmen. Fryatt’s goals fired Leicester to the title last season while Cox’s efforts almost single-handedly kept Swindon clear of relegation trouble and sparked an enquiry from the Walkers Stadium. But, while the Albion forward has been made to wait for his Championship chance after a £1.5million move to The Hawthorns, Fryatt has stayed with the Foxes and hit the ground running with 10 goals to his name this term. Cox said: “When I heard about Leicester’s interest it shocked me a little bit, because they had the leading scorer in League One at that stage. “I wondered why they were looking at me but they obviously wanted two strikers who would get them 20-odd goals a season. “Matty’s a player who works hard and his record last year was good. He was consistent and one of the reasons they got promotion. He’s a good player and we have to be on our guard. He has made the step up. He was high on confidence after last year after getting promotion and scoring so many goals. “The manager there obviously told him he would play and he should produce what he did last year and he’s cracked on, carrying on his form. He’s already in double figures for this year so he’s not done too badly. “But I believe you can step up anyway. There is never a doubt about quality and if you believe in yourself you’ll be able to do it. “It’s just about being given an opportunity to play. The first time Matty was in the Championship he didn’t have a great year but then he went down to League One and found his goalscoring form and realised it’s not greatly different.” Cox finally got his own Championship tally up and running against Watford last weekend after being handed just his second league start for the Baggies. The 22-year-old is determined to enjoy himself against the Hornets after playing the occasion instead of the match when making his full league debut against Plymouth. He said: “I really enjoyed the game last week. It was nice to be back playing again. The first game I played was the Plymouth game and I was in awe of the surroundings and getting my first game. It was overwhelming. “But I’d had that and Saturday was about enjoying myself and not being fazed. It’s what you play football for, to play in front of big crowds against big teams. I went out to enjoy myself. The Plymouth game was the first time I had stepped out in front of 20,000 people, playing from the start. “You go from Reading reserves and 200 people to Swindon, where there are 7,000 people and empty seats, to a big club where there are no empty seats and there are crowds shouting and cheering. “On Saturday I forgot all about that and it went well for me so I was happy.” Cox is defending a proud record against Leicester tomorrow, having scored in both meetings between the Foxes and Swindon last season. But, having seen Pearson’s men at first hand, the Albion marksman is expecting a tough test. He said: “I played them twice and scored twice. We drew 1-1 and 2-2. It’s nice to have that record but they’ve added over the summer and rightly so, because when you go up from League One to the Championship you’re going to have to strengthen. “They’ve done well and will be high on confidence. I know from personal experience what winning a league can do. “At Reading we won the league and then got eighth place in the Premier League. That was on the back of the previous year and for them it’s exactly the same. “They have had a really good year and won promotion and Nigel Pearson has kept the core of the squad which won promotion. They’ve done it in League One and they all know each other and now they’re giving the Championship a good go.” Cox V Fryatt
StanSP Posted 6 November 2009 Posted 6 November 2009 Cox V Fryatt More of a heavyweight battle than Haye vs Valuev. Fryatt to win
Webbo Posted 6 November 2009 Posted 6 November 2009 For the record I have been watching City since the late 60's....... MON yes, he won us trophies so arguably he was probably the best???However, he apparently was never seen on the training ground and left all that to Walford and Robertson? Pearson has turned us from being a disorganised, low in confidence, relegated division 1 team with loads of has beens on the books into the team we are today...... So for me bar the trophys that's why I believe he is the best.....my opinion. He's up there with the best for me. If he can get promotion this season then I'd say he could claim to be the best.
marbelladave Posted 6 November 2009 Posted 6 November 2009 He's up there with the best for me. If he can get promotion this season then I'd say he could claim to be the best. He has done remarkably well to turn round the playing side of the club, he has bought in decent players at minimal cost and built a fit, confident squad. As has been noted elsewhere he has done a superb job keeping us out of the media and keeping every one's feet on the ground, first class so far. My only reservation, again amply debated elsewhere, is Pearson's innate conservatism and the effect this has on match day. Experienced players are usually preferred over younger, more dynamic players despite evidence suggesting the opposite. He rarely changes games with substitutes, Watford excepted, and has persisted with a system of play to which we are manifestly unsuited. This has required players to be selected out of position, Oakley and Gallagher being the most obvious, and resulted in inconsistent performances and disjointed play. Having played pretty well last time out I will be really interested in seeing how we set up and how we play. Having said all that, we are within spitting distance of the top of the league so he must be doing something right... :dunno:
Koke Posted 6 November 2009 Posted 6 November 2009 I would say Pearson has changed games with substitutes. When things aren't going to plan he doesn't wait till the 80th minute and change striker-for-striker like previous regimes have done. Pearson does have tactical knowledge. On top of my head I can name a few games where he changed the game with subs; Swansea [Waghorn, N'Guessan], Crystal Palace [Gallagher], Watford [n'Guessan, assisted by Waghorn]. I'm sure there are other games last season as well. The criticism that he plays one or two players out of position to accommodate them is a valid point.
Koke Posted 6 November 2009 Posted 6 November 2009 Coventry as well putting on Howard and Waghorn which got us the equaliser.
StanSP Posted 6 November 2009 Posted 6 November 2009 And Swansea first game. Waghorn and N'Guessan at half time or around then. Changed the game totally.
davieG Posted 6 November 2009 Posted 6 November 2009 Interesting analysis from Onehorsevillage off Bentleys re WBA Away from home they haven't won since September 19th vs Middlesbrough (a very poor side on the day), a run of only 1 win in 6 away games. I should point out they've only lost once away in the league (at Barnsley). Look at the teams they have beaten and you'll start to see the gloss the media apply is actually quite thin: Forest, Peterborough and Ipswich in the first four games. Only Forest are competitive out of those teams and they sucked really badly at the start of the season. Further wins followed against Plymouth, Doncaster, Middlesbrough, Reading and Watford..... Okay the Watford game was a good one for them, but Watford just failed defensively on the day. The rest of those victories were against sides that are either poor or were on a poor run at the time. Look closer still and you'll notice their results against decent opposition (competitive or on a good run) is dire: Held at home by Newcastle on the first day A home loss to Swansea ...and a nil-all game at Preston. Okay I'll concede the Preston one looks pretty good compared to our result against them. Their losses have been against the mighty Barnsley (A), the dull and niggly Palace (H) and the rapidly improving Swansea (H). Their last away was a nil-all against the all-conquering Sky Blues.
StanSP Posted 6 November 2009 Posted 6 November 2009 Who's the ref for tomorrow? If it's Darren Deadman, he could do us some favours again tomorrow. He sent off Luke Moore the last time we met, which was the thrashing at Hawthorns with Howard hat-trick
Captain... Posted 6 November 2009 Posted 6 November 2009 I would say Pearson has changed games with substitutes. Pearson has been excellent so far and made very few mistakes in terms of tactics and signings. Tomorrow will be his biggest test at the Walkers so far, so we will see what happens. Despite poor results recently WBA are still one of the bigger clubs in the division and there is the added distraction of Mattock coming back and the reception he will get. This time tomorrow we will have a much better idea of our promotion credentials and whether Pearson could become our "greatest ever manager".
sdb Posted 6 November 2009 Posted 6 November 2009 Reckon we'll be brought back down to earth tomorrow. Really hope not but I think if the general over-reaction of the QPR game has spread to the team we'll get complacent and recieve a good hiding.
C-man Posted 6 November 2009 Posted 6 November 2009 Reckon we'll be brought back down to earth tomorrow. Really hope not but I think if the general over-reaction of the QPR game has spread to the team we'll get complacent and recieve a good hiding. Don't think there's any chance of complacency. Pearson clearly believes the media is a waste of time and will probably instill that mindset into the players' minds. If we get beat tomorrow it will be because West Brom have a better team than us or that they just perform better on the day; not because we're over confident.

Ozwin Posted 7 November 2009 Posted 7 November 2009 Nobody types like that when they're pissed. Common myth.
skinnydipper Posted 7 November 2009 Posted 7 November 2009 Someone I've been working with this week and next is a big Baggies fan and she reckons 3-0 to them. So if we only lose by 2 I'll rub her sodding nose in it Hoping for a performance in the style of the QPR game
Bugg Posted 7 November 2009 Posted 7 November 2009 I don't see why people think that we will lose this, when we played Newcastle we should have won that and they are a stronger team than WBA in my opinion, so anything less than a draw would be dissapointing. And I agree with people saying that Pearson won't let the team get complacent from the QPR game. A win for me

I'm sure there are other games last season as well. The criticism that he plays one or two players out of position to accommodate them is a valid point. Sorry, I think I expressed myself poorly. Clearly there have been occasions when players brought on as substitutes have changed the game, but what I was trying to express was my view that our substitutes are almost always 'like for like', that is they very rarely change the way we play. I was using this to further my argument that Pearson is innately conservative and his over reliance on 4-4-2 and the Howard / Fryatt partnership (now hopefully a thing of the past) have cost us points. This may not matter too much at the moment, given our elevated position after 15 games but when the better sides in this division start putting some decent runs together, as they most probably will, we might well regret not being more aggressive and grabbing more points when they were on offer earlier in the season. I remain an eternal optimist, wanting and to some extent expecting us to be great in every game when I clearly know that this is not going to be the case. I try hard to keep things in perspective but when you believe in the capabilities of our team as much as I do (naive and uncool though that is) it can be difficult and frustrating! "I am a simple man, I am always satisfied with the best".
Legend_in_blue Posted 7 November 2009 Posted 7 November 2009 We will win this game. And we are bigger than them.
