Polish president signs chemical castration law

Polish President Lech Kaczynski has signed a law making chemical castration compulsory for adults who rape children or immediate family members.

The introduction of the law means that Poland is now the only country in Europe where certain sex offenders will be forced to undergo the treatment.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk proposed the law in the wake of several high-profile paedophile cases.

The practice has been tried elsewhere but usually on a voluntary basis.

According to its politicians, Poland now has the toughest legislation towards paedophiles in Europe.

Popular support

Under the law, adults convicted of raping a child under the age of 15 or committing incest will be forced upon release to take drugs to reduce their libido - a practice commonly referred to as chemical castration.

Other European countries have experimented with the practice, which can produce unpleasant side effects such as breast growth, but only as a voluntary option to try to prevent people from re-offending.

The Polish law was drafted following a case last year in which a 45-year-old man repeatedly raped his daughter and fathered two children by her.

The law has been criticised by human-rights groups, but it enjoys widespread public support, with one survey saying close to 80% of people here support the measure.

I can understand why some people would want this but I can't help feeling a little bit uncomfortable about. Would anybody like to see this here?

I don't know. It makes me feel uncomfortable too.

why not??

It's like amputating the hands of thieves, or flogging so that it permanently scars a criminal. I know I get angry and I would be calling for such measures in the moments after being robbed, raped, whatever, if I sit down and think about such severe punishments, I just find them barbaric. It doesn't make you better than the person you're punishing. I want to feel morally superior to them. If that makes sense.

It's not as bad as it sounds, when I read chemical castration I thought it was something much worse than them just taking tablets. :D

The article says that the punishment "is for adults who rape children" so in my opinion chemical castration is quite leniant.

Any sick fvcker who rapes a child deserves everything and anything coming to him/her. Capital punishment would be more my choice but thats another argument altogether.

"Chemical castration" is a bit of a soft option for me, but good on you Poland anyway.

We should just send all criminals on a one way trip to an island in the middle of the seas somewhere. Then force them to fend for themselves!! We won't be paying for them then or have anything to worry about as they are out of our society.

Wasn't that what we used Australia for previously though!!

On a serious note, if my daughter was raped by someone, I'd like to think Chemical Castration was rather on the soft side. I'm not one for eye for an eye, as simply put it makes the world blind. At the same time, these people are clearly unhinged, so they need removing/detaching from the rest of the public.

It would be interesting to see the Vatican's view on this.

Poland is an overwhelmingly Catholic country and that faith has recently been implicated in a number of serious paedophila scandals, most notably in the USA and Ireland.

Will this treatment be dished out to errant priests? If not, the law won't be worth the paper it's written on.

What if they get wrongly accused? And then 10-15 years down the line this comes to light.

Is it a reversible procedure? I realise that it's more likely to be mistaken identity with the child-rape cases than the incestual cases.

Probs the reason why our country steers clear of routes like this - same with capital punishment as well.

It's some justice for the families that things like this happen; but when you consider the lifetime physical and psychological damage put onto the victims, no punishment is good enough.

Great idea. Sick cvnts should have their balls sliced off anyway.

Not sure the comment tallies entirely with avatar sig.......

Im sure Ive read somewhere they can get round it by taking other drugs to reverse the effects or something? Anyway I cant say I think its a particularly good idea. Just keep them away from the rest of society would be a start instead of giving them soft sentences and allowing them to reoffend.

Not being funny but if it was one of my kids theyd attacked it wouldnt be an issue... they wouldnt be around to think about trying it again. Sorry that makes me as bad as them, its the way I feel.

exactly why i'm against punishments such as this one, the one's lisa mentioned and the death penalty (plus other draconian punishments). of course some people seem to think that punishing an innocent here and there is a price worth paying. which i'm sure they would still be thinking if it were them, or a member of their family or friends, about to have a part of their body taken off, or to be killed.

which is the way i would feel too, but also the reason why the victims, and their families, are slightly removed from the judicial process, because it's not supposed to be about revenge....as i understand it.

Yeah youre right of course, I just dont think Id be able to rise above it like most people do..... these folk that forgive people whove killed one of their kids are amazing, Id want to kill them thats all. Then again I dont suppose me doing life for murder is going to help my kids recover.

Sounds fine to me, considered to have few permanent effects, you could argue that it would give people who otherwise have such unacceptable desires a chance to lead somewhat normal lives after serving their time? And should minimise risks of reoffending, and is cheaper than prison.

Its about time someone took a tough stance on this issue.

For far too long nonce's have been getting light punishments and just going out and recommitting time after time.

It's a bit of a moral dilema this. Dangerous nutters are forced to take anti-psychotic drugs and I don't have a problem with that.

I just don't won't to live in a country that mutilates criminals. It's just wrong.

If it was one of my kids how would I react? I honestly don't know.

The fuck is Thracian?

Tbf Thracian is usually surprisingly liberal on these issues.

Erm...it is used here.

We've been using chemical castration as one of the tools in treating sex offenders for many, many years.

Anyone believing it to be irreversible is sadly deluded, one of the major problems with treatment is when the patient fails to self-medicate in the correct manner and thereby regains his urges.

It used to be used as a method of suppressing homosexuality too - the disgusting treatment of Turing being a very notable example.

All in all - a total non-story.

Can I buy this from any good chemists?
