Martin Allen leaves Cheltenham

Martin Allen has left Cheltenham by mutual consent despite being formally cleared by the club of racial misconduct.

Allen was the subject of allegations he racially abused a nightclub bouncer in October and was subsequently placed on gardening leave by the League Two club.

Allen strenuously denied the claims and Gloucestershire Police confirmed last month that no action would be taken in connection with the incident.

Cheltenham nevertheless commenced a detailed internal investigation into the claims and the former Leicester City manager was absolved of the allegations.

John Schofield has been in temporary charge of team affairs since 20th October and it seems he will carry on in the role for the foreseeable future.

In a statement released to the League Managers' Association official website, Allen said: "Naturally I am very pleased with the outcome in terms of being found innocent of the charges but it is unfortunate that it has not been possible for me to remain at the club as manager.

"I would like to thank Cheltenham for giving me a fair hearing and the LMA for all of their support, including the legal team at Russell Jones & Walker, during this difficult period.

"I wish to reiterate that these allegations were untrue, deeply hurtful and upsetting to me. What I want now is to put this unfortunate incident behind me and concentrate all my efforts on pursuing my career in professional football management with my reputation intact and my head held high."

Richard Bevan, chief executive of the LMA, said: "The LMA shares Martin's disappointment that he is leaving Cheltenham, but he leaves the football club without a stain on his character. The allegations made against Martin were not only without foundation but profoundly offensive and upsetting.

"Over this period, Martin has been extremely distressed by these untrue accusations. Whilst he is very pleased to have been cleared by both the police and Cheltenham Town, following thorough investigations, he is keen to now get back to doing what he loves and knows best - managing a football team.

"Football managers are figures in the public eye and it is all too easy for untrue accusations to be made which can unfairly damage reputations.

"Martin has always had an exemplary record of dealing with players of all ethnic origins and has been a committed champion of the Kick Racism out of Football campaign for many years."

Good luck in his next job.

Good luck to the club that gives him his next job

Yes someone will be daft enough.....

Can see him being forced to go into non-league football now. Career clearly on a mssive downward spiral.

Good luck in his next job.

Are you serious?

This man should never be allowed to manage again.

There are plenty of rogues in football management, even at the highest level.

I'm sure Allen will find another job before too long.

I still cant believe he was manager here.

He has shown that he upsets people and is difficult to work with.

Probably the end of the road for him now.

Brian Clough Upset nearly everyone he worked with ...

A shocking move, and a bad misjudgement by Allen.

Had he stayed at Barnet and kept them in the league (as was looking quite likely), he'd have gone a long way towards restoring his reputation as a manager.

Instead, once again, he has allowed his mercenary instincts to prevail.

I wonder what the League Managers Association will have to say on this.

But he only had a contract to the end of the season and has been promised funds at Notts County for a promotion push next year. Can't really blame him.

I don't know where this leaves my cousin instead at Notts County at the minute, he was chief scout and then became care taker manager for the Rochdale and Dagenham games.

I know he was just caretaker, but he hasn't exactly turned it all around has he? County are in absolute mess at the minute. As good as their promotion effort was last season; should they get relegated, I honestly fear it'll a long stay in the lower tier next time.

I genuinely rate Allen and really hope he can keep them in the division, and hopefully build for next season. Even if that means 27 summer signings.

Out of curiosity, why?

I think he's a very good manager, and he gets decent results too. Didn't do that badly in his few games here, an' all.

Obviously he's a little unorthodox in his approach but there's also nothing wrong with a bit of variation.

He (according to lots of sources) pretty much alienated everyone here during his brief (yet still far too long) stay. The victory against Watford aside, I can't recall anything else about him that stood out, apart from mysterious back room staff and a vast amount of signings that just weren't good enough for league football, yet alone the Championship. I may have a different understanding of the word 'decent' though. If labouring to a Carling Cup win away at Accrington is decent, then the guy was exceptional.

I'm pretty certain every City fan looks back on the summer of 2007 now and shudders at where we were. You say he's unorthodox, but there's being unorthodox in your approach and there's simply not being up to task.

He did a decent job at Brentford, but he should've done better at MK Dons given the backing they had (given they were in League Two at the time, too). Cheltenham weren't in the best shape when he took over there but he crashed and burned with them, his record there is absolutely terrible. He was starting to do a decent job at Barnet only to have left them high and dry. Clueless.

Allen took charge of Notts County on the 11th April 2011, less than a month after joining Barnet. Chairman Ray Trew offered Allen a more permanent contract than the one he was offered at Barnet, and after picking up 7 points out of 9 at Underhill, the opportunity to squeeze some cash from a bigger club who are also famed for their lack of class, before quitting as soon as the next offer comes along was too much to resist.

It would seem Barnet fans don't think too much of him either.

I'm glad he's left Barnet because they were picking up loads of points while he was in charge and I don't want them overtaking Burton Albion.

Barnet cannot really expect people to act like they are under contract if they do not actually give them a contract.

Watching him interviewed on Late kick off was interesting, he looks like he doesn't want to be there, has no idea what he's doing there and just seemed fairly unsure of the whole thing!

With the currrent Notts County board, probably a match made in heaven!
