maddog Posted 26 January 2010 Posted 26 January 2010 Undoubtedly the most crucial game of our season so far. This game will decide where we will go this season. Rise up, and bounce back and finish in the top 10, or plummit into the bottom half. A positive performance and a positive result infront of a 28k+ crowd and the Sky TV cameras, will surely stop the rot and turn our season around. 3 defeats on the spin for the first time under NPs reign, a 4th defeat in a row will leave our playoff dream in tatters, destroy the remaining confidence the players have left and further demoralise the fans. Many mountains will have to be climbed should we lose Saturday, to somehow turn it around and make it into that elusive 6th place. The last 3 games have slipped away from us, we certainly don't seem to have had any luck with decisions, penalties we possibly should have had have not been given, and the run of the ball has gone against us but thats no excuse for the chances we seem to keep missing. Anyone knows if you don't take your chances, you won't win games. Pearson is adding fuel to the fire and burning himself week in week out. He has done an amazing job so far but like Ian Holloway, if you play your square pegs in round holes week in week out, every single week and the results go against you, then Pearson will always be questioned. Oakley and Gallagher are not wingers, yet nearly every game one or both of them ends up on the wing, it's quite baffling at times from NP when you consider Adams being sent out on loan, Dyer sitting on the bench and Gradel exciled to Leeds. Our lacklustre midfield don't seem to have much creativity, Oakley has been totally fooking useless all season, and Wellens is half the player he was at the beginning. N'Guessan has made a good impact but is inconsistent, King is invisible in games, Dyer hasn't really been given a real run in the starting line up yet this season. Combined with a blunt strikeforce with no cutting edge, Yann has yet to score a goal, Howard is past it for this division, Fryatt hasn't scored in a month and the goal he scored on boxing day was from the penalty spot. Gallagher isn't even been played up front, Waghorn isn't even our player, and Pearson shoots himself in the foot when another option, the pacy Dj Campbell is on loan at Derby and has scored a few. Dj is criticised so much for being offside a lot, but Fryatt is offside just as much as he ever was if not more. Chris Weale is keeping us in matches between the sticks, Neilson and McGivern aren't really good enough, only Michael Morrison is providing consistent decent performances at the back. And with Tunchev's return still a long time away, we are also looking dodgy at the back. Not long left in the transfer window, surely some sort of business needs to be done to turn this around. A couple of loan deals, a free transfer, there must be one or two decent buys out there that we can get to improve our squad and give us more options. I'm not having a knee jerk reaction here, or moaning, or doom mongering, Pearson has done a fantastic job, and if anyone can turn this bad run around into some performances and results like QPR away or Sheffield United at home he can. Back to the Toon game now, Newcastle look like almost certainties for promotion, we competed well with them at St James', once again a missed chance in a first half probably cost us the points there, Fryatt missing a one on one on the stroke of half time. Danny Guthries strike earned Newcastle a 1-0 win, but we certainly deserved a draw. We're picking up Newcastle on a small downer themselves, 4-2 defeat away at West Brom in the cup and only a draw at home to them in the League. They still remain clear at the top of the table on goal difference to the unstoppable Forest, but have 2 games in hand on the reds. They play Palace at home tomorrow night a game you would expect the Toon to win. Coloccini and Enrique are Premier League defenders and have looked awesome in the snippets i've seen of them this season, Nolan, Guthrie and Gutierrez are top midfielders, Ameobi, Smith, Carroll and Lovenkrands provide the attack, on paper Newcastle easily have the best squad in the division. Can we get the better of them No idea what the team will be for Pearson, Solano, Dyer, King may all start to shake up our lacklustre midfield. Fryatt and Howard could be given starts ahead of Yann and Waghorn. Will Chrissy Powell get another game having delivered a solid performance at Barnsley. Make no mistake about it, this is an absolutely HUGE game, a draw won't really do much for us, a loss will cripple us making it 4 defeats on the spin, a win though and a good performance, and all the fans and players will swiftly forget about the last 3 games. Fryatt, Yann, Howard, Oakley, Wellens, Gallagher, Waghorn all need a goal, and i think 2 of them will get one here and we will run out 2-1 winners, and the panic will be over
Corky Posted 26 January 2010 Posted 26 January 2010 Hopefully Newcastle are feeling the pressure put on by Forest and will be nervous. A good, positive start from us will get the crowd going. I think it will be close. I'll go for a 1-1 draw.

Based on previous performances against 'better' teams, we do usually strike up pretty good turnouts. I'm just holding out hope with this for Saturday! Sneak a win hopefully. 1-0. If not, at the moment I would settle for a draw.

He could throw in Solano and attempt to play the players in the correct positions. He could go 4-3-1-2 and play Kermo or Gallagher off a front two. No, too risky, too unpredictable. Play safe. Try really hard to keep the Toon out at all costs. Then lose 1-0. Tbh I'd rather we have a right go and lose 1-0 in that manner than some dullard predictable game of football.

A half decent performance would be great, but the season will almost certainly be not decided against teams like Newcastle. Not like maddog/peterborofox to over react, though.

If we won then brilliant but losing wouldn't mean the end of the season! of course if we lost 7-0 i'd be in doom and gloom land but still wouldn't think our season was over! Some changes need to happen yes but a loss isn't gonna ruin the season yet! Lets just hope for a better performance and see where that takes us!

Interesting regarding their away form, teach me not to do my research.... However they are 14 points clear of us and have been decent most of the season. If we play to our recent standard I can not see us getting anything!
