Unfortunately this is the price we pay for a free press. If we allow footballers anonymity for their dubious behavior then we have to allow anonymity to churchmen or moralising politicians or anyone else who wants to tell us how to live.

from what i can see, the people who moan about the press, are the same people who'd happily prostitute their privacy in 'ok' or 'hello' or in an exclusive in a newspaper. then get all 'respect my privacy' when awkward.

many famous people keep themselves completely to them selves and have little to no trouble with the press because they've never sold out to them.

His private life is his private life. What he does of the pitch shouldn't be made public. End of the day, he wins us the world cup this summer. Who gonna give a fook he's been knocking some slag off ? He'll be a hero and rightly so. He's a footballer end of the day not Jesus.

Turns out it is the girlfriend of a (recently departed) team-mate (apparantly)

Though I had to laugh at the News of The World Legal man today, saying that this was a victory for democracy, as it helps the NOTW produce.... wait for it...... wait for it..... wait.... PROPER stories

But if he was a bloke down the pub, and it emerged that he'd been knocking off one of the barmaids, he wouldn't be able to stop the gossip, would he. So why should he be able to stop gossip if he's a footballer? And when I say "stop gossip", I only mean prevent it hitting a wider circle. It's already been shown in this thread that people know what has been going on, so does that make applying for injunctions worthwhile? The only people winning in this are the lawyers.

This.

We have to go completely OTT about it, he should't be captain etc etc....bore off. He's the best captain we have on the field thats why he should remain captain, we have an amazing knack of hampering our own chances.

Would you still respect that captain and play for him if he'd been shagging your missus?

I certainly wouldnt give a shit if he was still the captain of england. Plus if he was, I would be pissed at my missus not just terry. And if your partner cheats then kick them to the curb and say good riddance.more

Well he's only been shagging the reserve left backs mrs... not the whole squads.

Fair play to him, i'd have given her one too.

I can only guess that you've never been in a long term relationship. The players are bound to take sides, this could create schisms in the dressing room.

I'm a fan of Terry's and I'm not saying he should lose the captaincy but I can see why some people think he should.

No you misunderstand, I said I couldnt give a shit if he was england captain, why on earth would the players? The players are boundd to take sides???? why?

Its absurd that he should lose the captaincy over this, Surely its what he does on the pitch that counts?. Yet another mountain out of a molehill.

I think that comment shows a complete lack of understanding as to what the role of a captain is, let alone the england captain.

A quote from Fabio Capello on the role of a captain and professional footballer:

However, the England manager did add: "A captain must be an example to follow in training and a leader during the game. And, of course, I would hope he could be an example, a role model outside the game - in life - as well.

"That's very important, always. Not just for the England captain, but for everything that we, as sportsmen, show youngsters. That is very important. He has to be an example.

"We need to be role models when we play for England and when we play for our clubs. Part of this involves fair play and respect towards the referee and the public who come to see the games.

"In that respect, we need to get back something we may be losing a bit."

Of course its not perfect situation, but we go OTT about someone who had an affair. Why do you think he should be cleaner than clean...? Because the media enforces that view? And what else would the manager say? I dont care if he has an affair or not? Get real.

My point is he players won't give a shit, he will still lead the team better than anyone else, and if he loses the captaincy over this then the only damage it will do is to the england team.

Try and have your own opinion instead of agreeing with the popular.

1. I'm not sure people have gone OTT, nobody I had a chat with in the pub last night was really bothered and no one in this thread seems to be. Most have either made a joke of it or said that his private life is his own business. The only people who are making into a big deal are the tabloids which is to be expcted.

2. I think that's bollocks, football players will still loyalties to their friends and have feelings on the issue.

3. Who the **** are you to be so condescending?
