StanSP Posted 14 April 2010 Posted 14 April 2010 Not good, considering what happened to the Togo team bus. I know it's not the same as being attacked with guns, but it's still the same principles. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/8620216.stm The coach carrying former England boss Steve McClaren and his FC Twente squad has come under attack en route to their 1-0 Eredivisie defeat at AZ Alkmaar. The bus was pelted with stones during the bombardment on Tuesday which caused damage to the side and rear of the vehicle - there were no injuries. Dutch police have launched an investigation into the incident. Twente chairman Jupp Munsterman said: "I cannot believe this has happened. How low can you get?" He added: "If the stone comes through the windscreen and hits you while travelling, what then?" McClaren was certain that the attack did not have any effect on the outcome of the match which leaves his side four points clear of rivals Ajax at the top of the table. The 48-year-old, who became Twente boss in June 2008 after failing to guide England to the Euro 2008 finals, said: "That had no impact on our game." McClaren has impressed during his managerial spell in the Netherlands, helping Twente finish second in his first season. And he is on course to win the title as the campaign reaches its climax. "We missed an opportunity but we still have it in our own hands," he added ahead of Sunday's clash with Feyenoord. "The reaction of the team is very important. We must now win the last two games and go for it." Before succeeding Sven-Goran Eriksson as England head coach in 2006, McClaren guided Middlesbrough to League Cup glory in 2004 as well as to the final of the now defunct Uefa Cup in 2006 in Eindhoven where they were beaten 4-0 by Sevilla.
dimmerchant Posted 14 April 2010 Posted 14 April 2010 Ow dyou say 'orrendous'. Thees ish very bad for da players and thee cloob.
Brainy Posted 14 April 2010 Posted 14 April 2010 Fans were battering the bus with their umbrellas in the pouring rain.
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 14 April 2010 Posted 14 April 2010 Oh my god, McLaren is close to winning the league with FC Twente! Thats impressive, so the question has to be asked, why was he so shit with England? Maybe took the job too soon? Players didn't respect him due to him not being a big name? Bowed to the press too much? Middlesborough's mesmeric fall from grace also indicates what a good job he was doing their as well.

Some managers are just not suited to the international game and vice versa I guess. No matter what happened with England, McClaren has proved what a good club manager he is once again. I hope he bags the title with Twente.

Without taking anything away from Mclaren he inherited a good squad and lets face it the Dutch league is in one of the poorest states it's been in and it's been like this for the last few years or so. He's still done a good job and kept their momentum going but I reckon Nigel Pearson could also lead Twente to the title if he was put in charge.

Ha. Is it fvck. The pikey little kids off the estate across the road from me launch stones at the buses that drive past on almost daily basis, it's hardly a fvcking state of emergency. Even trying to compare it to the murder of three people is really disrespectful imo.

Ajax have only lost 3 games, and only drawn 4, and have a goal difference of +79, it's not as though Twente been strolling to the title unopposed. The rest of the league may be a bit guff, but there's still competition from Ajax and PSV.

Edmund Posted 16 April 2010 Posted 16 April 2010 and have a goal difference of +79 Enough said. The fact that a very poor Ajax side have a goal difference of +79 after only 32 games says it all really. I'm not saying that they have no competition I'm just saying that with the squad Mclaren inherited plus a few additions it's not the greatest achievement winning that league. I don't know if you watch any dutch football but usually they have cricket scores most weekends. Like I said he's still a done a decent job to keep their momentum going but I wouldn't really call it a great achievement of any sort. What he achieved at Middlesborough shits all over winning the dutch league.

Maybe it wouldn't be a great achievement winning the league if it were only the shit teams, but he's done pretty well to get them within touching distance of the title above PSV/Feyenoord/Ajax, one of which will isially boss it. To be fair though, I know balls about Dutch football really.l

C'mon off it, it's achievement for a club like FC Twente to win it above the big 3. Only 7 titles since the introduction of Dutch Football in the 50s have been won outside the Big 3. Before AZ last year, it was 1980 when AZ won it and before that 1964. Enough said. The fact that a very poor Ajax side have a goal difference of +79 after only 32 games says it all really. The current Ajax team ain't that bad and if the Dutch League was that bad and Twente that good.....how come the previous manager didn't win the league? McLaren lost a couple of his best players in the Summer too. Fine achievement by McLaren if he pulls it off.
Edmund Posted 16 April 2010 Posted 16 April 2010 I don't watch a great deal of Dutch football anymore but my good mate is a season ticket holder at Ajax and I just base my opinions on what he tells me. I know one thing and that's Ajax are in a sort of transitional stage, they may have some decent players but not to the standard their used to seeing. From what he tells me Twentes success is more down to the other teams becoming weaker and nothing to do with Mclaren being some sort of miracle worker. I like to think he knows what he's talking about as he knows the league inside out.
Tony Pine Posted 16 April 2010 Posted 16 April 2010 az have also won 9 and drawn 3 in their last 12 games so yeah, it's no cakewalk
MC Prussian Posted 2 May 2010 Posted 2 May 2010 Congratulations to Steve McLaren for guiding Twente Enschede to its very first Eredivisie title! Lost only twice this season. Star striker N'Kufo is set to leave the club and join the Seattle Sounders shortly after. He won't get any pause at all - probably going straight into the starting eleven next week or the week after that.
dandannieldanok Posted 2 May 2010 Posted 2 May 2010 Great achievement for the club, they've had investment but to overhaul the likes of Ajax and PSV is still something pretty big, nicely done Steve. Still keeping up the Dutch accent aswell
CosbehFox Posted 2 May 2010 Posted 2 May 2010 I assume that's the team coach leaving for Enschede today.....quality. Football support is still untouched by money in many of Benelux as showcased by that beauty of a clip.
Jordan Posted 2 May 2010 Posted 2 May 2010 Replace the red with blue, and it'll be like that all the way down the M1 in a few weeks, right?
