Steven Posted 19 May 2005 Posted 19 May 2005 Wilcox Agrees New TermsJason Wilcox has agreed a new one-year deal with Leicester City. The 33-year-old former England international's current contract was due to expire at the end of June. But Wilcox has jumped at the chance to remain at the Walkers Stadium for another season and is desperate to play a full part in the club's 2005/06 Championship promotion push. The experienced winger moved to the East Midlands in July from Leeds United but managed only 15 appearances last term after damaging his cruciate ligament during the 1-1 at Coventry in October. And manager Craig Levein is delighted that the ex-Blackburn man has agreed new terms and pledged his short-term future to the Foxes. Levein said: "I am pleased that Jason has agreed a new deal and I am sure he will prove to be an integral part of our squad next season. "He is a model professional and showed a lot of grit and determination in bouncing back from his latest injury set-back. Retirement never once crossed his mind. "Jason is the kind of player that you want in the dressing room and once all the relevant paperwork has been completed then I'll look forward to welcoming him back with the rest of the lads for pre-season training on July 1."
Mark Posted 19 May 2005 Posted 19 May 2005 A sign of desperation here, Levein is struggling to find any other options for the left wing. He had one good game last season against Sheffield United in September, so good he could hardly manage another appearance all season, dreadful decision.
Ricey Posted 19 May 2005 Posted 19 May 2005 Wilcox is lucky that Levein hasn't seen him play in the first team yet because if he had I'm pretty sure he wouldn't of got a new deal.
Louise Posted 19 May 2005 Posted 19 May 2005 I can't say I'm thrilled but I don't think he'll be on much money.
Ric Flair Posted 19 May 2005 Posted 19 May 2005 I can't say I'm thrilled but I don't think he'll be on much money. 111524 More than Dawson x 10, I imagine. Sublime bit of business, Levein's really coming in to his own now!

C-man Posted 19 May 2005 Posted 19 May 2005 Levein said: "I am pleased that Jason has agreed a new deal and I am sure he will prove to be an integral part of our squad next season'' Not looking for promotion obviously
filbertway Posted 19 May 2005 Posted 19 May 2005 Give wilcox a chance under levein, you saw what happened with gillespie.
Nationwider Posted 19 May 2005 Posted 19 May 2005 He's probably our best bet for getting a cross over from the left-wing, as Tiatto prefers to wander inside and Jordan would rather aim at orbiting satellites. Having said that, I'm surprised. I hope he's not "Plan A" for the LM spot?
dan_84 Posted 19 May 2005 Posted 19 May 2005 The fact he's probably worked so hard to get back to fitness Levein wants to give him a chance, and show faith in him
Jonbluefox9 Posted 19 May 2005 Posted 19 May 2005 'An integral part of our squad' sums it up really. I think it's a decent move by Levein as he knows a squad full of young lads won't win promotion. They need a few experienced players in their to help out eg Tiatto, Wilcox and Dublin. Atleast our team won't be full of 30+ year olds next season.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 19 May 2005 Posted 19 May 2005 In my opinion this is an opportunity to get rid of another useless old fart completely wasted.
Newcastle_Fox Posted 19 May 2005 Posted 19 May 2005 This is a joke but I suppose it is an experienced head for the youngster. But honestly from what I have seen of him is a waste of space. A crock and a shite footballer. A good benchwarmer I hope or waterboy!

Sublime bit of business, Levein's really coming in to his own now! 111527 That's rubbish. He will be on a pay as you play deal and it will bo t be for very much money. I have already outline din another thread why I feel this is a good bit of business and as for Ricey saying he was poor for the first team that is just a case fo false memory. He was one of the few players who retained his form in the early season when we were playing terribly.
Anish Posted 19 May 2005 Posted 19 May 2005 The fact he's probably worked so hard to get back to fitness Levein wants to give him a chance, and show faith in him 111599 I don't care how hard he worked to get back to fitness. Trevor Benjamin worked his socks off but he was still rid of because he was awful. The same should have happened with Wilcox. But honestly from what I have seen of him is a waste of space. A crock and a shite footballer. A good benchwarmer I hope or waterboy! 111623 I agree with both Fez and Newcastle. Not a good move imo, especially when he never even featured in the first team after his shocking display against Millwall (following his injury recovery).
Simon Posted 19 May 2005 Posted 19 May 2005 I'm sorry but why are people so upset about this? Hes barely played any games and hasnt been at full fitness for some time I'll give him the benefit of the doubt until hes a reasonable number of games.
Leicesterboi Posted 19 May 2005 Posted 19 May 2005 let him get a full pre season under his belt! im certainly willing to give him a chance.
Teeno Posted 19 May 2005 Posted 19 May 2005 I think that Levein is being fair to the lad here. I think he admires the way he worked to get back to full fitness last season, and you have to remember what Gillespie was like back in November, Levein probably feels he can get the best out of Wilcox like he did Gillespie.

Wilcox had picked up an injury like this before this in his career so it would've been easy to just give up and just retire but he worked very hard in the gym, on the training ground etc to regain fitness before the season was over. Not a good move imo, especially when he never even featured in the first team after his shocking display against Millwall (following his injury recovery). He was supposed to be out for the rest of the season when he picked up the injury so it's unfair to judge him on that performance. He'd done brilliantly to even be fit enough to start a game last season after the injury.

What has he done to deserve a new contract? "He's barely played any games and hasn't been at full fitness for some time" And when he has played, he hasn't looked very good.
