Milans Foxes Posted 14 July 2010 Posted 14 July 2010 Is anyone else a little worried by this? I've seen it mentioned briefly in various threads but thought it needed its own discussion. We have been so used to seeing the team doing laps of Bradgate Park and whatnot over the past few years as part of pre-season training and reports so far suggest there has not been a lot of raw fitness training. I'm all for training with the ball and bringing a more continental training approach in but do have a few concerns. Last year, fitness was a strong point. Pearson had his own sports science department who were constantly analysing fitness and performance and we had relatively few injuries throughout the season. Are the sports science lot still with us or did they go to Hull with Pearson? And I've read rumours from Swans fans that fitness was an issue for them last year. Another issue is that we seemed to start pre-season training a week later than planned because of the managerial turnaround. Most Championship teams have already had friendlies and so surely will be a step ahead in their fitness!? I just hope lack of fitness preparation doesn't come back to haunt us towards the end of the first few matches of the season!

evs_the_fox Posted 14 July 2010 Posted 14 July 2010 In a word, yes. Gallagher was in the Merc saying he was enjoying it. Great. One of the the laziest players in the squad is enjoying pre-season. Hardly fills you with confidence does it...
MrSpaM Posted 14 July 2010 Posted 14 July 2010 I doubt the whole squads been doing nothing but eating pies all summer. We'll have to wait and see how the pre seasons go i guess. It's a little harsh to judge Soasa's regime before we've even kicked a ball, i'd take a lot of the swansea fans comments with a pinch of salt.
The Doctor Posted 14 July 2010 Posted 14 July 2010 Our supposed lack of fitness training could actually be a blessing. There will be a point where fitness training becomes counter-productive, causing the players to tire before the start of the season (an excessive amount of friendlies also does this), so by minimizing the amount of fitness training and friendlies, we could be in a better condition than the rest of the league. Besides how do you know sousa isn't slowly building up, doing a small amount of fitness training each day and slowly increasing the amount the squad do each day/week. This would also probably be better than doing a shed load of fitness training in the first week or so back since lauching back into things so quickly and heavily could end up causing injury.
Fox You Forest Posted 14 July 2010 Posted 14 July 2010 Is anyone else a little worried by this? Well no not really considering we have no idea what they're doing in training atm, all we were told was what happened in the first couple of days.
lcfcsnow Posted 14 July 2010 Posted 14 July 2010 With only three pre season friendlies scheduled before we take on Sunderland, that is just not enough. Most of the players are not going to have enough match fitness by the time the season starts.

Who is to say they arent playingbehind closed doors on their Jollies anyway
Jon the Hat Posted 14 July 2010 Posted 14 July 2010 Sousa wants to see who will have the ability to play how he wants to play. Doesn't mean they won;t be doing fitness training.
Fox You Forest Posted 14 July 2010 Posted 14 July 2010 Sousa wants to see who will have the ability to play how he wants to play. Doesn't mean they won;t be doing fitness training. Exactly, he needs to assess the squad as quickly as possible, how can he do that if they're running for a week, I'm sure the pain will come.
lcfc"weasel" Posted 14 July 2010 Posted 14 July 2010 Get Coach Carter in to sort them out! I joke, I think he needs to get them doing ball stuff so he knows who will feature in his plans and who won't. I have faith in him to ensure that the squad are physically prepared for the season ahead.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 14 July 2010 Posted 14 July 2010 LargeAl's comments sum it up. Just how fit is fit? Guess we'll find out in August.
Guest Bilo Posted 14 July 2010 Posted 14 July 2010 This article from shortly after he was appointed Swansea boss shows that Sousa values basic fitness and sport science to boost basic fitness as highly as Pearson did. http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/2009/06/29/paulo-sousa-wants-science-to-help-keep-swans-fit-91466-24006225/ As for the Sports Science team leaving with Pearson, so far as I'm aware that isn't the case. Shakespeare and Walsh went with him whereas much of our Sports Science is done at Loughborough Uni, which Sousa will still have access to. I'm sure he will be doing fitness training as any other manager would, but the fact is that the players will need to be comfortable on the ball to be able to hold down a place under Sousa hence the ball training. I'm not overly worried to be honest, we have such a good set-up as regards fitness in place already that Sousa would be an idiot not to use it, and I doubt he's that.

There are behind-closed-doors matches taking place in Slovenia as well as fitness training apparently, according to the blog on another thread.
Milans Foxes Posted 14 July 2010 Author Posted 14 July 2010 That all sounds very positive. Am glad Sousa has the use of the sports science department and it is encouraging to know the players are getting match-time under their belts! In the modern day, I would expect professional footballers to keep up a very high standard of fitness even during the summer anyway. Its not like they're going to be coming back overweight and unable to run more than a few yards. I also read a story saying Swansea had one of the fittest squads in the Championship last season as well somewhere. Am just hoping that the fitness worries coming from the Swansea fans is just bitterness at us stealing a very good manager from them, I'm sure it is!

I've also heard a few Swansea fans saying they don't know what Oliveira did, when that article clearly states that he studied Sports Science at uni and oversees the related work. I see little reason to worry to be honest, I think with Sousa's enthusiasm for fitness, Oliveira's knowledge of it and the genuinely world-class SS links we already have in place that the fitness of the squad is in good hands.
howsyourfather Posted 14 July 2010 Posted 14 July 2010 To be honest we know absolutely nothing about sousa's training regime, we know they did some ball work, that's it. Unless anyone has gone to belvoir drive and watched the entire training sessions i don't think we should even bother discussing it
Bettsj2 Posted 15 July 2010 Posted 15 July 2010 I'm amazed that this thread exists. The squad only reported back last week!!!
Nod.E Posted 15 July 2010 Posted 15 July 2010 With only three pre season friendlies scheduled before we take on Sunderland, that is just not enough. Most of the players are not going to have enough match fitness by the time the season starts. Yes, I totally agree, because their fitness status would be 'severly lacking in match fitness,' or 'needs match practice if he is to be ready for the season.' Honestly, some people think that football manager knowledge gives them an insight to actual football management.
buzzy Posted 15 July 2010 Posted 15 July 2010 what druds are you lot on. they have only gone back last wednsday so stop you're moaning . start to complain if we are struggling by mid season

Very worrying, i think we will be behind Crystal Palace come 1st day! Lets hope we get into our stride fairly quick because it is a concern.
