CRYSTAL PALACE boss George Burley wants to sign veteran Leicester midfielder Matty Oakley in a cheap deal for the Eagles.

Oakley – who will only cost a nominal fee – is not likely to figure for the Foxes this season and the 32-year-old could team up with one of his former managers in the next few days.

Can't see it happening myself, due to the fact that if its Wellens and King that are going to be the usual CMs, we wouldn't have any half-decent back-up if Oakley did go. :dunno:

If it does happen, it wont happen before the weekend. Wouldnt that be typical, he didnt score for us last season ,we sell him to Palace, his first game is vs. us, he has a blinder and goes and scores.

Hope he stays despite 80% of Leicester fans turning against him in 2010. I think he can do well in a keep-ball system for another season at least. Wouldn't be my first-choice starter though despite me saying all that.

He'll be well paid, if we got rid and picked up someone else to cover it'd almost certainly work out cheaper and no worse. We'll see how it goes. He's been okay but not really anything more than steady for a while now.

If he did go Vitor can play in midfield, and I am sure it was mentioned at the weekend that Sousa wants to use him as a holding midfielder anyway? unless I am hearing things....

CRYSTAL Palace boss George Burley has confirmed that Leicester midfielder Matt Oakley is on his list of potential midfield recruits.

The Eagles are set to add to their options in that area with Ipswich's Owen Garvan due to undergo a medical this afternoon ahead of a £250,000 switch.

And Burley says that Oakley, 32, is also another attractive signing.

"I've spoke to Leicester but nothing has been agreed," Burley told the South London Press. "He would give us something different.

"We're looking to add to the squad and he is the right type of player."

Like above, it would leave us with no other decent back up unless Sousa has someone lined up. Although, Wellens and King are my first choice, Oakley can be important back up.

Didn't he have a few good games in pre-season?

Cannot believe Garvan is having a medical at Crystal Palace, I like him. Good young footballer, quite tricky at times.

Interesting, we've been negotiating which suggests to me that Sousa will have someone else lined up to come in.

Hopefully the Daily star/Sun rumours of us being linked with Koren are true.

Tony Capaldi's proposed move to Crystal Palace has broken down, forcing the Eagles to look elsewhere.

The Northern Irish full-back looked all set to agree terms last week, but the deal has collapsed at the final hurdle.

Eagles boss George Burley has been left frustrated, having come so close to landing Capaldi on a free transfer, but admits that he remains in the market for a full-back.

"As is always the case with these things, it's never done until it's done and it looks like we will now be looking for another left-back to fill that hole," he told sportcroydon.co.uk.

Meanwhile, despite missing out on Capaldi, Palace are close to finalising a deal for Ipswich midfielder Owen Garvan.

The Irishman is set to undergo a medical at Selhurst Park on Monday and Burley is delighted to have almost secured one of his top targets.

"To attract players of Owen's calibre shows the club has real ambition," he said.

"Everything is agreed and he just needs to pass his medical."

Speculation

There had been some confusion as to whether Palace could buy players while still officially under administration, but Burley is confident an agreement will be pushed through.

He added: "Well there is a fee agreed and I've been told that everything is okay, so I hope there is no problem."

Burley is also looking to add two further fresh faces to his squad before the start of the season, but has refused to confirm whether Wolves striker Sam Vokes and Leicester midfielder Matt Oakley are on his shopping list.

"There will be speculation," he said.

"We are still hoping to add a striker and another midfielder this week."

Leicester City are set to reject any Crystal Palace approach for skipper Matt Oakley.

Palace have inquired about the availability of the 32-year-old midfielder in the week that the two sides clash in the Championship opener at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

However, City manager Paulo Sousa is reluctant to allow any player to leave at the moment as he prepares for his first season in charge.

Palace's attempts to woo Oakley came to light when manager George Burley publicly revealed his interest in the former Derby and Southampton man.

He said: "I've spoken to Leicester but nothing has been agreed. He would give us something different. We're looking to add to the squad and he is the right type of player."

Oakley has been used by Sousa during pre-season games in his more familiar central midfield role and he was chosen ahead of Richie Wellens for a starting spot in last weekend's friendly clash with Sunderland.

Oakley, whose early career at City was blighted by the club's relegation to League One, has been a pivotal figure in the past two seasons.

He was League One Player of the Month in February, 2009, as City established a 23-game unbeaten run on their way to the third-tier title.

Oakley went on to be named in the Professional Footballers' Association's League One Team of the Year together with team-mates Jack Hobbs and Fryatt.

He also won the goal-of-the-season award for finishing off a team move in the 4-0 victory over Cheltenham.

Last season, Oakley made 37 league starts but was sidelined for the final month of the season with an ankle injury.

Oakley said this week that "the signs are good" for City as they look to make another assault on the Championship promotion places.

"A new manager has come in and he wants us to pass the ball a lot and we have taken on board what he is saying," he said. "The confidence will come the more games we play. It might take a little bit of time but the signs are good."

I'll tell what annoyes me most about him, he was really good for Derby and so was Howard. In fact they were both fans favourites. But since he has been here he just hasent looked interested on the pitch.

I just dont understand why he is captain. He doesn't score any goals rarely does he play a killer pass for an assist and isn't really strong in the tackle either. He also doesn't shout a lot to the others. What is his role in the team?

Im not a fan as most of you have guessed. I hate Derby County. I also hate the fact we sign players from out rivals especially when they turn out to be shit. I wouldn't mind if it was Kriss Commons or Miles Addison. Not has been donkeys like Oakley and his mate. Foxoffderby.

Strong, but the only reply that makes sense! In my opinion the guys a waste of space, if you think differently then you've been watching different games to me in the last 3 seasons. He's anonimous for 90% of any game, and as for his time as club captain....what were they thinking? He can't even involve HIMSELF in games so how he's supposed to influence others is beyond me.

I'd get rid as soon as an offer came in, get him off the wage bill, and give someone like Hobbs, who leads by example, the club captain role.

Would be a mistake playing Oakley he is past it if we can get a fee for him we should take it, he may have done well pre season but it wont last when it matters.
