There's something odd about the whole Bebe story.

He was a pretty unknown forward playing Portuguese non-league and then second division football up until the summer.

His agent reckons PSV were offered him for free in May but turned him down, then he went to Vitória de Guimarães in the summer of 2010 on a five-year contract with a €9 million release clause. Five weeks later, Man Utd sign him for around the level of that release clause (c £7.5million). He was signed solely on the recommendation of Carlos Queiroz while Alex Ferguson was acting as his character witness in a disciplinary tribunal.

Then there were reports that he was an absolute dud in training, before Ferguson personally defended him saying he just needed to work on fitness. And over the weekend he was reportedly out of the Champions League squad for United before a correction came out saying he was in.

I'm not sure what to make of it all - it seems a whole lot of odd things all relating to one guy, there must surely be more to this one than meets the eye.

Yeah, I know Carlos Quieroz is in a bit of trouble now, but he still has a very good reputation in the sport. But, yeah, this is still odd. Bebé hasn't been playing professional football for too long, but then again, Vitória de Guimarães signed him and apparently Réal Madrid were interested in him, too. Perhaps he's got lots of talent but just needs to get his rough edges polished a bit? He's only 20.

i want his agent!

seriously tho i think he's obviously a rough diamond that utd have payed well over the odds for - to beat off interest from other clubs (which was reported and possibly bull). he'll do ok imo.

You could say that with hundreds of players though but why him? And why would you take a high risk gamble of 7.5 mil based on just assumptions :/

Hmmm, a useless Portugese player who nobody had heard of 3 months ago and will probably never get a game. I wonder if we'll get him on loan.

Fully agree with the maker of this thread, very fishy, definitely a strange story. However, I wouldn't shy away from the idea that the media are deliberately portraying things in such a way.

I heard they bought him for '£8M' (note the quotation marks) because it took a bit of pressure off the Glazers for being stingy with funds and makes them look like they're backing Fergie. In actual fact he probably cost them next to nothing and makes Vitoria look like wonderkid producers.

Definately something off with the whole transfer anyway.

That makes no sense, surely with the scouting network Man Utd have they could find any number of players for that kind of money to be in and around the squad to appease the fans, rather than going for someone nobody had ever heard of before, they didn't even pay that for Hernandez did they? As for wonderkid producers, he was there for five weeks. :dunno:

theres a story on this in the mail. he basically belongs to the same talent/sports management agency as a few other portuguese players. all a bit suspect considering the price they paid. sounds more like a harry deal.

He is saying they didn't pay £8m, that was a story that suited everyone.
