Wycombe Fox Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 Really looking forward to the game tonight. A short journey across the Solent in a catamaran full of about 300 Portsmouth fans with 2 City fans!! Bandit country! C'mon City!!!
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 Come on Leicester! Two wins down there would be nice. And if we are goiing to be poor in the league this season, a cup run would be more than welcome!
MC Prussian Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 If we can't beat Pompey (be it tonight or on Friday), we're definitely not going to perform well in the league this season.
Guest Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 Can't tell you how good it is not having to absolutely nail it to a match after work/crash on someone's couch the night before the game. Leisurely start to the day and no need to leave for at least a few hours. Nice!
dandannieldanok Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 Got a bad feeling about these two games, because Pompey's position is a false one. Their team on paper is actually very good for this level and by all accounts they should have thrashed Sheff Utd on Saturday. But because they're bottom of the league the expectation on us is going to be extremely high, never mind the pressure on us due to our own league position. Could be a telling week for Sousa's future. I just hope that regardless of what happens, he's still got full backing.
Guest Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 Couldn't you argue that our position is false too then given some of the performances and stats we've seen?
RowlattsFox Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 One thing I don't want tonight is extra time, with the game coming up on Friday. Think we might lose their tonight but pick up a result on Friday. Hopefully the likes of Vitor, Moreno, Kennedy and Moussa get some game time and Waghorn and Fryatt manage to get a goal.
dandannieldanok Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 Couldn't you argue that our position is false too then given some of the performances and stats we've seen? Yea you could quite validly, doesn't change my point that much though. People will instantly see Pompey rock bottom and think we should be bagging an easy win. Hopefully the likes of Vitor, Moreno, Kennedy and Moussa get some game time and Waghorn and Fryatt manage to get a goal. Extra time will hurt them more than us, they've only got about 15 players. We just have to use our squad wisely.

We're playing the same team on Friday, so each team will have similar problems in terms of tiredness etc. And I'm sure we have a slightly bigger squad to make changes for Friday if need be. I would rather get the win in normal time too though.
dave_the_fox Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 3 away games to save Sousa's career? Maybe not, but if we dont pick anything up then the Walkers for the Scunny games is going to be Boooooo Central!
Stig the Lawnmower Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 I would think that tonights game (at least first half) would be the time to try out the likes of Vitor, Moreno, Kennedy, Abe etc. Then if at half time things aren't going well we can change it to the trusted formula (which come to think of it, is not going well either !) at least then a different team can be played on Friday which Pompey couldn't legislate for. But we need a win without extra time.
The Padster Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 Merc Sousa admitted there had been a sombre mood in training yesterday after Saturday's defeat, but said they would be ready to face Portsmouth tonight at Fratton Park in the Carling Cup. "Mentally we are not so ready because they gave everything, and we need to feel proud that they tried to play a good game against QPR," said Sousa. "The mood was not the best and the approach is a little bit different, but we will be ready to play well and get the win." Only slightly disconcerting. The lads better get their heads back in the game.
dandannieldanok Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 Merc Only slightly disconcerting. The lads better get their heads back in the game. Yes it is a bit disconcerting, a cup game with slightly less pressure than league games is probably just what we need. At least Sousa is being honest and upfront with the fans about things like this and things like the transfer requests though. Without a doubt in the years after Adams and before Pearson, the mood at the training ground must have been rotten but we never got told.
Guest BlueBrett Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 Sousa really does my head in. I'm not one of the ones calling for his head but listening to him talk makes me wonder how the Thais ever thought he would be a good front man for the club. His English is dreadful his voice annoying, he's full of excuses and deviod of explanations when we lose and slightly smug on the 2 occasions we have won. I feel like we have a club full for the most part of good honest players who strike me as standing in stark contrast to his sickly Portuguese demeanor and seem unlikely ever to adapt to his managing style even if their ability eventually enables them to adapt to his playing style. On a brighter note though I am confident of a win tonight against Pompey. 2-1 Waghorn and Hobbs! COME ON CITY!!!

Beacause god knows we need them to.
The Padster Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 his voice annoying, Always a good reason to dislike someone.

I think it's evident in every interview that he is trying to do justice to the questions he is asked, and give an honest and intelligent answer. Half the time the journalists don't want anything too deep, though, and they just plough on with the next question. But his honest assessment of the mood of the players after Saturday's defeat is refreshing, and a long way from being "full of excuses and deviod (sic) of explanations". Would you rather he said that the team were delighted with the defeat? Or just trotted out some platitude about being keen to put things right in the next game? Neither does he speak 'dreadful' English, although he has got a strong accent, certainly. I quite enjoyed seeing Pearson spar with journalists, but his complete refusal to say anything significant at all was starting to get boring. Sousa seems to have a willingness to talk honestly about his approach to the game, without having any illusions in himself as an entertainer, as for example, Holloway, obviously does. Hope you're right about tonight's result. Would love Hobbs to get a goal, he should be a real threat at attacking corners and perhaps it's a case of the first goal opening the flood gates.
milan_foxes Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 Would love a win tonight, but without a doubt i'd rather have a win on Friday.
Lester LXXIV Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 I can't wait for tonight. A normal finish at work, a stroll home to get changed, a few beers in the local and then a 5 minute walk up Milton Road! I wish we could play away to Pompey every week! ..

That is one of the things that my gripe is based on. I don't really want to hear from him about the mood of the players. I'd take it for granted that like any normal group of people they would be disappointed about a loss and besides they are free to express their feelings in their own interviews. I would much rather he spent his time analysing his own tactics, particularly concerning formation and substitutions, than deferring to the players' state of mind. Hobbs is bound to score sometime! Im going to start backing him incrementally each week til he does. 1 pound stake tonight come on lad!
dandannieldanok Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 Portsmouth 13/8....tempting. Very tempting, they're going to be forced to play a strong team whereas we can try allsorts with the size of our squad.
Ric Flair Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 I've had £20 on Pompey at 13/8. Those odds are too good to leave alone.
Corky Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 Really hope we get through this tie. A cup run is always enjoyable.
Edmund Posted 21 September 2010 Posted 21 September 2010 Really hope we get through this tie. A cup run is always enjoyable. With the season already looking like a write off I've got to agree. Can't see us being relegated but can't see us finishing top half so a good cup run would be a pleasant consolation.
