ScouseFox Posted 18 October 2010 Posted 18 October 2010 He's been pretty shit since he got there. No idea why they sacked Southgate.
Guest Bilo Posted 18 October 2010 Posted 18 October 2010 Unsurprising, signed a series of expensive flops and Middlesbrough have looked genuinely woeful at times. Whoever inherits that squad has a tough job on their hands.
FoxyPV Posted 18 October 2010 Posted 18 October 2010 He's been pretty shit since he got there. No idea why they sacked Southgate. Falling attendances - simple as. Money talks.
The Doctor Posted 18 October 2010 Posted 18 October 2010 Falling attendances - simple as. Money talks. they were a point of newcastle when he got sacked, surely money from promotion > Revenue lost from falling attendances.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 18 October 2010 Posted 18 October 2010 Never rated Strachan, and with the money he has spent he should have done much better.
FoxyPV Posted 18 October 2010 Posted 18 October 2010 they were a point of newcastle when he got sacked, surely money from promotion > Revenue lost from falling attendances. Steve Gibson more or less said this was the reason. I think their attendances were down to around 11- 13k when Southgate got sacked. I'm sure the money from relegation was more but I think the falling crowds was a bigger long term problem. Not 100% though on the whole finance thing.
Collier Posted 18 October 2010 Posted 18 October 2010 No idea why they sacked Southgate. Because they had expectations above their platform, they weren't doing terribly at all when he got the chop but they expected better for some reason. Look at what's happened to 'Boro since and you realise what a superb job that nutsack McLaren actually did there. Falling attendances - simple as. Money talks. I don't think that was the case, Middlesborough have never been known for making a shitload off of gate receipts, people at the Riverside always were pretty sparse, unless one fo the Premier League big boys came to town.
Finnegan Posted 18 October 2010 Posted 18 October 2010 they were a point of newcastle when he got sacked, surely money from promotion > Revenue lost from falling attendances. They were there because they had a squad far too good for the Championship. That Strachan's fucked it all up doesn't mean Gareth Southgate was in any position to take the club forward. He had years to do so with Gibson's resources and obviously wasn't good enough for the Premiership. Gibson was building for the future, he took a calculated risk and unfortunately for him it's not paid off. But there's no coincidence Southgate's not had another job. He's shit.
Corky Posted 18 October 2010 Posted 18 October 2010 Another talented manager given the sack too soon. Isn;t that right LMA?
Guest Bilo Posted 18 October 2010 Posted 18 October 2010 Without wanting to get into the 'big club-small club' debate, Middlesbrough strike me as a kind of Coventry of the North who won't be going near the Premiership for a while. Must have been frustrating for them to watch Newcastle piss the division last year while they spent much of the season in mid-table. I don't dislike Boro, but there's little doubt they're something of the third club in the North-East and it's little coincidence that Newcastle and Sunderland have bounced straight back in recent years while they've struggled.
dandannieldanok Posted 18 October 2010 Posted 18 October 2010 Should never have sacked Southgate. Have Middlesbrough reached the league position Southgate left them in since his departure? No.
Finnegan Posted 18 October 2010 Posted 18 October 2010 Should never have sacked Southgate. Have Middlesbrough reached the league position Southgate left them in since his departure? No. Would Southgate have brought them straight back down again after huffing and puffing for a while with a few over-priced signings? Yes. When we went down we got in a new manager, got in some exciting new players, had a breath of fresh air blown through the club and climbed out of the ashes as a phoenix a-new. Boro needed change. Granted they opted for the wrong choice in personnel but that's a different error of judgement.

So Southgate would have taken them back up then?.....instead of huffing and puffing with over-priced signings from the SPL in the lower reaches of the Championship. When we got relegated from the premier league in 03/04, our fans forced out a manager that had us sitting in the top of the half of the championship. The Southgate sacking was at a similar point of the season to that. It took us 5 years to reach that position again. I wonder how long it'll take Middlesbrough to reach where they were under Southgate, I'm sure their fans would be furious if they were told potentially another 5 years. Change is bollocks, it was ridiculous change that forced us to rise from the ashes as you say.
Finnegan Posted 18 October 2010 Posted 18 October 2010 But your point is based on hindsight. Of course if Gibson knew what was going to happen he'd have taken the boon of promotion (or at very least, a promotion shot - let's not get ahead of ourselves, it was early in the season - Southgate didn't actually have them up) over mid-table mediocrity. But he made a judgement call, obviously took promotion for granted and thought Strachan would be a better choice to take them on in the Premiership. Southgate was tried, tested and proven not good enough. As I say - if you want any more proof of that, look at what the chap's doing now. He's hardly inundated with management offers is he?

Southgate has only just started in his managerial career, hardly ready for the scrapheap yet. And if he's "proven not good enough", what does that say about Strachan? I'm not saying Southgate didn't make mistakes, but every manager does, and the start Boro made under him in the championship showed that he was perhaps learning very quickly. I wouldn't be surprised if Southgate's decided to sack the whole managerial thing in, probably needed to do a lot of soul-searching after being sacked when his team were so high up in the table. I don't blame him for sitting on the ITV sofa and picking up a consistent and reliable wage. Given the way Southgate speaks and analyses on ITV, I'd personally say he's got an awful lot more to offer to the game.
Wymsey Posted 18 October 2010 Posted 18 October 2010 He 'tore up' his contract and left with no thought of wanting compensation. Wish Sousa did that.
Matt Posted 18 October 2010 Posted 18 October 2010 sousa for borough Nah Sousa's holding out for the Liverpool job.
Salieri Posted 18 October 2010 Posted 18 October 2010 He 'tore up' his contract and left with no thought of wanting compensation. Wish Sousa did that. Heroic if true.
BoneDog Posted 19 October 2010 Posted 19 October 2010 I love Strachan, the mentalist. Same here, he's always had the passion and has been good entertainment over the years. He made me laugh the other day when he started eating that yellow stick of liqourice or whatever it was halfway through his post match interview!
