Bugg Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 Leicester should make scoring from a corner as their new year's resolution, starting from saturday when they score 4 goals, all from corner kicks .
Fatbloke Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 At the risk of attracting another tirade from Finnegan about what I don't know and what the professionals, who have overseen our corner kick taking without success for so long, really know better, I'll offer some assistance. We're cramping the space and being predictable. We're standing all but static in the box to receive the deliveries and it just stacks the odds against us ever getting success. So:- a) We need to widen the spaces so those spaces can be run into. b) We need to vary our approach all the time so defenders cannot get comfortable about their task and therefore have more chance of making wrong decisions. c) We must time our running much later and much more precisely. d) There needs to be far more choreography with players working in partnership to provide decoys etc. e) The delivery has to be much more accurate, consistent and potent. At the risk of having people say "not again" think back on Sheehan's deliveries from all dead ball situations. They were fast, accurate and always asking questions. When we didn't score we certainly caused discomfort among defenders and often went close to a goal. Your first task is to keep giving defenders new problems and more open space to worry about. For instance if we give ourselves the option of a shortish corner, say a 15-yard pass, someone has to be alert enough to mark the receiver which means at least one defender can't be in the box making more space in there. Also if the pass is made and then the ball is put into the danger area, the ball is having to be defended from a different angle, with different spin and flight but by defenders who are having to react to a new situation rather than being able to stand in pre-set positions, thus increasing their chance of error. And what about having specialist near post attackers and a dummy runner on the edge of the box who allows a fast ground pass to go under his foot for a secondary runner? Just lofting crosses into the box for a couple of hopeful big fellas is so predictable and relatively easy to contain. But those big men will have a better chance from various types of corners if others are helping to provide more space with various ploys. But it takes genuinely detailed work on the training ground - and players who are receptive enough to co-operate and attend to the timing. Basically, corners should be worth 10-15 goals a season. Free kicks the same. But we are so unimaginative and so inconsistent with both.
Foxblogger Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 What's the count now? 236 corners without a goal now. City scored 1 goal from the 356 corners they won in 2010.
Dylan Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 236 corners without a goal now. City scored 1 goal from the 356 corners they won in 2010. Decent ratio.
Salieri Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 I remember under O'Neill how we were such a threat from set pieces. The delivery was normally pretty decent from the likes of Guppy or Izzet which we may be sadly lacking to be fair, but you would see Walsh/Taggart/Elliott arriving from deep to plant a firmly placed header in the top corner. It's not rocket science, whip a cross in and the big lads (like Hobbs particularly) make a late run from the edge of the box and it's in the back of the net. O'Neill did it again at Villa, employing Laursen in a similar and very effective role. I've seen some good balls put into the danger area but nobody with the necessary nous and aggression to put it away. It can't be that hard to drum into them on the training ground, can it?
Collymore Posted 29 December 2010 Posted 29 December 2010 236 corners without a goal now. City scored 1 goal from the 356 corners they won in 2010. yeah but the amount of penalties we're getting is ridiculous. I bet we've broken a record for the amount of penalties in half a season.

Little Nicky Posted 3 January 2011 Posted 3 January 2011 So that makes it 241 now right? I'd take 2 for the price of one, sod it, I'd take one from a corner at the minute, I sigh every time it goes over the dead ball line off of one of the opposition players at the minute
Leicester_Loyal Posted 3 January 2011 Posted 3 January 2011 Sol Bamba to get our first corner goal this season
