How is La Liga exciting?

Recommended Posts

I read somewhere that UEFA considers La Liga the most exciting league in Europe. Yet there's only ever two contenders - Barcelona and Real Madrid who have both only lost 1 game each this season.

Am I missing something?

Additional Note: Real Madrid or Athletic Bilbao for the win!

Because there are more teams than Barca and Real Madrid which contribute to the league to make it exciting?

It's more exciting than the Premier League for the majority of the season, I think.

Yeah I agree the matches are great but the actual race to win it seems pointless it might as well just be Barca vs. Real and whoever wins, wins the league.

It's not the most exciting, no way. Most easy on the eye/best technically maybe, but not exciting. Not in terms of unpredictability anyway, which is most of what constitutes 'excitement' to me.

Take free-spending Barcelona and Royal Madrid out and La Liga is a complete bag of shit in my opinion.

For passion, excitement, attendances and atmosphere its the Premier League (though i think the Championship is a better league) and Bundesliga all day long

Doesnt seem anywhere near as exciting as Serie A did in the 90s (when they used to show it on C4 and they had the weekly round up show with James Richardson). Admittedly, the attacking nature of the Italian game was no where near as free spirited, but I loved it cause there were about 7 or 8 teams who were all going for it and seemed massive to a young lad.

I think there's a better culture of attacking football in La Liga, that's what always struck me about it.

The premiership's just as attacking but the difference is they attack in style. Most goals are well worked moves which you know have been practiced time after time on the training ground.

Apart from games including Barcelona and Real Madrid, La Liga is pretty boring. Saying that, games such as Wolves Vs Wigan aren't great footballing spectaculars :D

That post reeks of jealousy a mile away. No need to point fingers at Barca and Real Madrid's spending policies when you look at Man City and Chelsea in England.

In my opinion the Premier League is not an ounce more exciting than La Liga. At least you get to see Barcelona and Real Madrid put in regular master classes in football every now and then... A bit like Chelsea of last season.

How can a league where two teams are simply head and shoulders above everybody else throughout history exciting exactly? I completely agree the Premier League doesn't have a team capable of dominating Europe but its never been more unpredictable with Spurs and Man City upsetting the established order, and if they've spent money to get there, who cares? Do you really want to see the title swapped between Manchester United and Liverpool for the next hundred years? :dunno:

Once again apart from the big two, other games are played in half empty stadiums, mute atmosphere and tedious non-contact football with almost no variation in play whatsoever. I'd personally much watch a fire and brimstone game featuring Stoke City or Blackpool any day of the week or a game in the Bundesliga

Oh but i must say im certainly jealous that Leicester City aren't being mentioned in the same breath as the Spanish giants :giggle:

La Liga is exciting, more so than the Premier League in my eyes.

Like has been said, you can say there isn't much outside Barca & Madrid, but you'd be wrong. Look at Valencia, Villareal, Atletico. And yeah, Wigan v Bolton isn't always the most of exciting games.

Even when we have United - Chelsea or United - Arsenal etc, it's rarely an exciting game, whereas you look over the past few seasons of El Clasico, and you've got a 6-2, a 5-0, a 4-1, a 3-3, there's rarely games like that between our top teams.

It's a different type of excitement, they're full of attacking flair, if that's what you class as exciting, La Liga wins I reckon.

I suggest you have a look through the recent histories of the Premier League and La Liga then. I count more different teams in the top 3 in Spain than I do in the Prem. But then again the two best teams in Spain are arguably the two best teams in the world as well, so you'd have to play so extraordinarily well to keep up with them. But there's little point in arguing as you say that you prefer the "fire and brimstone" of the lower Premier League

Yes in recent history, Sir Alex Fergusons Manchester United have totally dominated, whereas before they hadn't been a force for a long LONG time, English has football has gone through many more periods and times of different teams dominating...in Spain..its always been Real Madrid and Barcelona.

For a supposedly "lower" product, the Premier League isn't doing so badly, after all its only the most watched (global viewing figures, im aware the Bundesliga has the largest average attendances) and richest football league on earth, along with currently being the best league in Europe....according to UEFA's own coefficient.

The whole Spanish wankfest is nauseating

PS i agree with some others on here mentioning that games such as Wigan Vs Bolton aren't the best games to watch, totally agree, i'd be as likely to watch that as i would Almeria Vs Levante.

The "lower Premier League" was referring to your Stoke/Blackpool comment.

And you were around when the likes of Preston and Wolves were amongst the elite of English football then? Or even in the relatively recent times of Liverpool domination? No. Besides what does it have to do with the excitement of the league? But when you resort to bigging up the Premier League with TV ratings and UEFA coefficients I know that it's most likely down to your ignorance of the Spanish league. It's fair enough if you prefer the "rough and tough, no pulled punches, fire and brimstone Super Sunday" Premier League. I think you'll find that most of the La Liga fans enjoy the superior technical ability of the teams, even the non-Barca and non-Real Madrid teams. Now if you don't mind, I think I'll be watching the tie between Sevilla and Villarreal, which finished 3-3 last week. Exciting? I think so!

No i wasn't around during those days...so i should just pretend they didn't happen, and just go on the last 20 odd years instead? :S Real Madrid and Barcelona have completely dominated Spanish football since the beginning....England has never had that duopoly thank god.

Your also saying that La Liga has "superior technical ability" as if its a fact? What physical evidence is there of this? As far as im concerned its a lot easier to look all pretty and "technical" when the game is practically non-contact over there in comparison with the Premier Leauge which is much stronger, physical and quicker.

Either way, we both have differing opinions and i respect yours

Yes, go with the last 20 years rather than the last 120. The Prem is in no way more 'exciting' than La Liga and hasn't been for a good long time. Maybe things can be spiced up by Man City, but Tottenham have merely replaced Liverpool in the top six and Arsenal haven't been able to keep up their form throughout the season. Chelsea look well out of it this time around, sadly.

And it should be clear to anyone that actually watches the Spanish league that it is technically superior to any league. The first touch, the dribbling, the movement, the passes even the shooting to some extent, is just generally that little bit better. Yes, it's a different style of football they play to the 'rough' Premier League, but it's by no means a non-contact game. That is a myth beyond proportions, which probably stems from football no-brainers that see Messi dance past 5 players only to shout "why does nobody get into him and **** him up".

My opinion is the exact opposite to pretty much all of that, i really don't see what excitement one can get from La Liga, for me the games are sleep inducing almost if they don't involve the big two, it is not even close to the drama of your average Premier League season. ive spent many years travelling and working around Europe and when talking football, the Premier League is pretty much always chosen over anything else simply because of the speed and end to end style of play. Its the reason its gotten so big across the globe after all. But the technical football fascists will always cry foul and whine on and on about how the Spanish teams makes more passes (because they get more time too) and that somehow makes them, and their league, superior.

If you want to talk technical football...why don't you watch Serie A? "Technically" its the most refined in Europe :dunno:

PS No i happen to agree with you, Lionel Messi is simply unplayable in whatever league he'd play in.

I quite enjoy La Liga (prefer Serie A (and the Bundesliga) though, growing up watching it has swayed me), but the assumption that all teams are 'full of attacking flair' as someone has said is bullshine.

Just because a team has a continental name, it doesn't mean they're going to knock the ball around like Brazil circa 1970.

The fact that La Liga is the league of choice for most of the current European and World Champions (something the Premier League has NEVER been able to boast) is a fairly accurate reflection of its current status.

And that's before you take the likes of Messi, Ronaldo etc into account.

Both Barca and Madrid would have walked the Premier this season. The fact that an ageing Manyoo side in serious decline remain unbeaten after 21 league games tells us all we need to know about the current state of English football.

Thats nothing at all to do with the huge tax breaks footballers receive in Spain is it? Or the much easier style of play? Or the fact that a lot of worlds elite footballers have tended to be hispanic/latin based?

I also wouldn't refer to "the state of English football" considering we have around 5 or 6 clubs that are strong enough to walk into the semi-final of the Champions League....whereas Spain has....you get my point.

Although in all fairness we all have to remember that last years Champions League final was contested by teams from neither leagues.
