funkyrobot Posted 21 January 2011 Posted 21 January 2011 With Clark Carlisle appearing on question and previously on countdown, it got me thinking about intelligent professional footballers who when they get on the pitch are as thick as pigsh*t. Carlisle fits this category well. At city we've got Matt Oakley who talks much better than he plays. In the not too distant past we had Gareth Williams who looked kind of studious but again didn't do much on the pitch. Any suggestions either city or elsewhere? We could build a squad of clever but sh*t footballers and get that Swiss guy who managed spurs a few years back to be their clever but sh*t boss.
VampLCFC Posted 21 January 2011 Posted 21 January 2011 That Clark Carlisle is a funny one, in interviews or if he is a guest on a live match he comes across quite thick, but he's obviously not, it's just that slow monotonous voice of his!!
Captain... Posted 21 January 2011 Posted 21 January 2011 Danny Mills was always rumoured to be very intelligent and an academic, but he was a bit of a clogger on the pitch.
Huuuuuume Posted 21 January 2011 Posted 21 January 2011 Slaven Bilic has a degree in law and can speak a few languages. #justsaying
funkyrobot Posted 21 January 2011 Author Posted 21 January 2011 you mean Christian Gross? That's the one. Mad as a box of frogs
funkyrobot Posted 21 January 2011 Author Posted 21 January 2011 Supposedly Iain dowie has a masters degree in engineering. His face reflects his style of play on the pitch!
Dom_Harborough Fox Posted 21 January 2011 Posted 21 January 2011 Gudni Bergsson, not sure if anyone remembers him? Icelandic international who was at Bolton for years. Now a certified lawyer

How can Oakley be classed a crap player , ok he isn't up to the standard we expect now , but the bloke has had a good career and has hardly been crap
Dickie Greenleaf Posted 21 January 2011 Posted 21 January 2011 Great film. Very hard to choose between that and Bogus Journey
funkyrobot Posted 21 January 2011 Author Posted 21 January 2011 How can Oakley be classed a crap player , ok he isn't up to the standard we expect now , but the bloke has had a good career and has hardly been crap I think half of city fans agree with me half with you. Im not disputing he's had a good career, so has Carlisle. I'm just saying that he's a bit crap on the pitch for city in my opinion.
Wymsey Posted 21 January 2011 Posted 21 January 2011 Trevor Benjamin was crap tbh and he's quite intelligent outside of football
Fox92 Posted 21 January 2011 Posted 21 January 2011 I'm not sure if there are many footballers that are really clever - and I mean really smart. I did go to school with (and still am mates with) a player at Sheffield Wednesday. He was quite clever, but like most footballers, their brains are generally in their feet. With Steven Gerrard being my favourite footballer I have all his DVD's and he states that he was never clever nor thick either. As I said, most of them have their brains in their feet. And, regarding Gareth Williams. He was never 'crap'. He just didnt tackle. His close control, first touch and passing was great though. I don't think I ever saw him misplace a pass. Just look at when he played for Nottingham Forest with the likes of Jermaine Jenas, Williams was described as 'the best passer at the club'. ... He was (and still is) one of my favourite players. Can you tell?
ts_1010 Posted 21 January 2011 Posted 21 January 2011 Got to have Dowie as manager. The guys a rocket scientist... and a useless manager.
Webbo Posted 21 January 2011 Posted 21 January 2011 Wasn't Josh Low doing a degree in law in his spare time while he was here?
Corky Posted 21 January 2011 Posted 21 January 2011 Wasn't Josh Low doing a degree in law in his spare time while he was here? Indeed he was.
Callabinho Posted 21 January 2011 Posted 21 January 2011 Seyi Olofinjana, is studying for a masters degree in chemical engineering.
body102 Posted 21 January 2011 Posted 21 January 2011 Pontus Kamark was a very clever man could speak about 5 languages fluently . Obviously he does not fit into this category , as he was also absolute quality on a football pitch
potter3 Posted 21 January 2011 Posted 21 January 2011 Wasn't Josh Low doing a degree in law in his spare time while he was here? Well I think we have our winner.
Wymsey Posted 21 January 2011 Posted 21 January 2011 Gary Lineker anyone? He seems to know his stuff outside of football like at the Sports Personality of the year Awards. I say he was crap because he left us (one of the biggest teams in the country )
ajthefox Posted 21 January 2011 Posted 21 January 2011 FOOK RIGHT OFF has Iain Dowie got a degree in anything, he's an absolute plank.
