Jackirius Posted 30 January 2011 Posted 30 January 2011 I would be more than happy with Ricardo and Faye, also if Sven could bring in a backup midfielder will also be good.

Adster Posted 31 January 2011 Posted 31 January 2011 Leicester are a bigger club than Celtic anyway so...
Ric Flair Posted 31 January 2011 Posted 31 January 2011 I've got a feeling we're going to be in for a very frustrating day. It might not be Sven's fault but going in to the last day of the transfer window still in the hunt for upwards of 3 players is never a great idea.

A few very good players and we're obviously in dialogue but nothing looks even close to being finalised! Glenn Whelan hoping to leave Stoke today. Another very good player at this level and would be super in our midfield 3 if/when one of the other 3 are out.

Yup, if other clubs get wiff of someone half decent being available then they will be in for them.
Ric Flair Posted 31 January 2011 Posted 31 January 2011 Yup, if other clubs get wiff of someone half decent being available then they will be in for them. However, i'm sure we'll get whiff of any players being lined up by other Championship clubs so although we might not get the shit hot players we want, we might still pick up some useful players but we need to act fast. I've been very surprised at the lack of permanent signings this month, Sven had the best part of 3 months to plan for this and he's either going for players way above his station or he's been let down big time by players and agents. Thankfully we have a decent squad currently, but we're still ideally 2/3 players short of a squad that can win 12/13 games out of the next 18 which is needed for a shot at the play-offs.

I'm surprised and disappointed at the lack of permanents to be honest. I have no problem with loans, but we need to also bring in a few players for the long term. It's worrying in a way because what we are doing is a very short term strategy, I have a feeling the Thais don't want to end up being stuck in this league at the end of next season with a load of players picking up big wage still having a couple of years left on their contracts. We need to get rid of the dross asap from out squad, no fecker will want to touch them with a barge pole though.

Think most players of the calibre we are after dont want to commit themselves to playing in the Championship and will only go for a loan with a view to a perm if we're promoted! True what you say though. Will be a serious rebuilding job in the summer if we dont go up!

I appreciate that, and don't mind the big name loans. But there are other players out there who are good enough for this league and would be willing to move permanently. It's a fine balance and for me i'd be more comfortable with one more quality permanent transfer, we are a bit top heavy on the loans side of things. Having said that we only had three in the team the last game, which is a manageable amount. If you had 5 (or 6 with vitor) then that's over the top.

If we are making a serious push for promotion this season, which does appear to be the case difficult though it may be, then players 'good enough for this league' will probably not be good enough for the Prem, so what would be the point? I feel the situation is quite simple, Sven is getting in the best players he can, short term, to get us promoted, he will rebuild again in the summer, whether for the Prem or the Championship is yet to be decided. Buying players at this stage is difficult for all kinds of reasons, far better to rebuild properly in the summer when you know where you stand. In modern football, I think this strategy is pretty much spot on, I might wish that football was different to this, but it isn't...

In the league position we're in, loaning players is maybe the only sensible option. Playoffs is the only realistic goal we'll be able to achieve and that in itself is a gamble. If we fail to go up this year, which is most likely, then it's a lot of money 'wasted' which could've been saved and been spent more wisely in the coming summer transfer window. To me this is sensible investment by the Thais without being unambitious. I mean already Bamba, Yakubu and Vassell are doing their best to set things alight here
