Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 The head wants to go on but the body can't take any more. I think of an action but I can't do it the way I want to. It's time to go. The proper Ronaldo has announced his retirement today, aged 34. Without question the best striker in the modern game.
Mikey Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 Sublime back in his day, probably for the best he retired. Will be remembered as a true great though.
shen Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 The proper Ronaldo has announced his retirement today, aged 34. Without question the best striker in the modern game. Maybe the most complete striker in the modern game, but it's not without question whether he's the best as it depends how you measure it. Had he been less fragile throughout and more slim near the end of his career, I don't think there could be a case against him. Brilliant player and a shame that he's now being described as the 'old Ronaldo'
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 14 February 2011 Author Posted 14 February 2011 Agreed, he'd be frighteningly good if he had a decent set of knees and a smaller appetite for women and booze. Still remember his hat-trick against Man United in the Champions League at Old Trafford like it was yesterday.
Ultra Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 Quality player, who had an incredible World Cup in 2002 Shame his dodgy knees meant that Europe rarely saw him in his prime..
breadandcheese Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 Even with his injuries, he came back and produced some phenomenonal displays. The best and most complete forward I've ever seen.
StanSP Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 Legendary player and will be remembered as one of the true greats of the game. You don't get many players who can be part of such great clubs in their playing careers. You have to be seriously good to play for Barcelona, Inter, Real Madrid and AC Milan. And he's got a crazy goals/games ratio for Brazil.
Haydos Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 One of the most talented ever and certainly the best striker I've witnessed in my lifetime. Legend.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 14 February 2011 Author Posted 14 February 2011 A goal ratio of around 0.7178, in all competitions. Unbelievable.
CosbehFox Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 Shame his dodgy knees meant that Europe rarely saw him in his prime..[/size] He only played 50 games in Brazil! 1998 World Cup for me, so disappointed before the Final. I remember him absolutely mauling Chile in the Second Round.
StanSP Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 Just watched the Man Utd 4-3 Real match where he scored that hat-trick. The game itself was good but he just stood out by a mile. That 3rd goal
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 14 February 2011 Author Posted 14 February 2011 Bobby Robson's expression after he scored that goal against Compostela says it all.
Ozwin Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 I remember being around 6 or 7 and he was about 20 or so and had the world at his feet, everyone wanted to be like him in the playground. Now that it's all over it feels strange, makes me feel a bit old.
Samilktray Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 Massive shame we never got to see him play in England. The best player I ever watched in my life time without question.
Guest BlueBrett Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 Great player and a great personality to match. Even when he couldn't run anymore he was still deadly! A genuine legend.
Joe. Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 He's done it at the highest level, everywhere he's been. Even in his twilight years, through all the self-induced shit he's put upon himself, he's still produced the goods with whoever he's been involved with. Incredible career, and one that makes him by far one of the greatest strikers to have ever played the game. 1993 --- Cruzeiro --- 14 (12) 1994–1996 --- PSV --- 46 (42) 1996–1997 --- Barcelona --- 37 (34) 1997–2002 --- Inter Milan --- 68 (49) 2002–2007 --- Real Madrid --- 127 (83) 2007–2008 --- AC Milan --- 20 (9) 2009–2011 --- Corinthians --- 31 (18) 1994–2006 --- Brazil --- 97 (62)

And when you factor in the number of games he must have played when not fully fit or returning from injury it is even more phenomenal. What a player.
Austin Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 True Football Genius ... teeeeek a booooo son!
lildave3 Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 Alongside Roberto Di Matteo, my boyhood idol and favourite ever player
Joeb.lcfc Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 the greatest modern day footballer no one will match his career or legacy
Finnegan Posted 14 February 2011 Posted 14 February 2011 the greatest modern day footballer no one will match his career or legacy Eh, they probably will. Fat Ron was good at his peak but he didn't stay at his peak for long enough. If Messi keeps himself fit and at the top of his game until he's in his thirties he'll leave behind a far greater legacy and have a much better career. Pains me to say so, but even C Ronaldo will.
