chrisfox Posted 10 June 2011 Posted 10 June 2011 From the merc website Leicester City have turned to former England international David Nugent as they begin to widen their search for a new striker.City have missed out on Marlon King, and a deal to bring Yakubu to the Walkers Stadium is in deadlock over personal terms. Leicester City have turned to former England international David Nugent ..Manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has started to look at other strikers and Nugent is considered an option. The 26-year-old is a free agent after his contract expired at Portsmouth. Pompey had hoped to re-sign Nugent, right, who they had paid £6million for three years ago, but have admitted defeat after failing to agree terms. Nugent will certainly attract plenty of interest from other clubs, and has been linked with Blackpool, who almost signed him last season, as well as Ipswich Town and Bolton Wanderers. The striker is believed to be on around £25,000 a week at Fratton Park, and City may be able to offer him the best personal package. It is personal terms which have hampered the permanent signing of Yakubu, according to reports. When the Nigeria international joined City on loan from Everton last season, there was an option on the deal for a permanent transfer to take place this summer. After scoring 12 goals in 20 games, Yakubu said he wanted to stay at City. The Mercury understands there is no problem with the deal between the two clubs, as the Toffees want to cut their losses on a player they paid £11.5m for in 2007 so they can free up funds for manager David Moyes to reinvest in his squad. Everton could let Yakubu go for a fee of £2m. However, the player's wages of between £35,000 and £40,000 are the stumbling block, and there has been no movement for some days, with reports in Africa that Yakubu is now weighing up moves to Turkish sides Fenerbahce or Karabuksor. But a move to Leicester is still very much a possibility for the 28-year-old. Nugent would bring plenty of firepower to the Walkers Stadium. He began his career at Bury and scored 18 goals in 88 appearances during three years at Gigg Lane, before moving to Preston North End in 2005 for £100,000. He scored 33 goals in 94 appearances for the Lillywhites and was snapped up by Pompey. He struggled to establish himself at Fratton Park and had a successful season on loan at Burnley before returning to Fratton Park last season, where he scored 14 goals, including two against City, one in the 6-1 defeat of Paulo Sousa's side at Fratton Park and the winner at the Walkers Stadium in March. Nugent has 14 England Under-21 caps, scoring four goals, and one full England cap, which he marked with a goal as a substitute against Andorra in 2007
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 10 June 2011 Posted 10 June 2011 I think Nugent would be a good signing, especially for free. Though would need another striker as well at least.
davieG Posted 10 June 2011 Posted 10 June 2011 Doesn't seem to have a very strong goals to games ratio
Babylon Posted 10 June 2011 Posted 10 June 2011 Doesn't seem to have a very strong goals to games ratio Not looked, but is it warped by his terrible return in the premier? In this division I'd guess it's not too shabby.
h.nutt26 Posted 10 June 2011 Posted 10 June 2011 He would play LW Forward for us like he's done for pompy this season. 14 a season wouldn't be two bad alongside someone like yakubu who could get 20 and then with gally on the other wing who could get double figures again and goals coming elsewhere. As a free he would be great IMO

RowlattsFox Posted 10 June 2011 Posted 10 June 2011 He was excellent when Portsmouth beat us at home, I think the fact he can play the wide striker role appeals to me, work rate is excellent and is capable of scoring a decent amount of goals. If we were to sign Yakubu then someone like Nugent would be a decent signing I reckon.
Lester LXXIV Posted 10 June 2011 Posted 10 June 2011 Yeah I remember him being a cocky twat in front of the kop when he scored! Aagh well, I forgive him!
Charnwood Norris Posted 10 June 2011 Posted 10 June 2011 Never rated Nugent to be honest, but you never know... he's still young and might suddenly get better and finding the net.
Wasyls Pec Deck Posted 10 June 2011 Posted 10 June 2011 Not sure I like the idea that Nugent might be a fallback if/when the Yakubu deal goes cold. Surely we're after both?
h.nutt26 Posted 10 June 2011 Posted 10 June 2011 Did Sven tell you this?? Yeah he rang me this morning
Les-TA-Jon Posted 10 June 2011 Posted 10 June 2011 So we'd consider Nugent at £25K a week , but not Yak on £35-40K? Madness - Surely we should really be looking to sign Yak
Fez of Mahrez Posted 10 June 2011 Posted 10 June 2011 Somehow I don't think baulking at 35-40k a week in the Championship (along with a fee and signing-on cash) is madness. A lot of people on here seem to think we can buy success and don't care about what happens if it all goes wrong (which it almost inevitably will). Nugent would be a decent signing on a free even at those wages. Paying 2m and 35k for Yakubu would frighten me, taking a long term view.

You should write for the Mercury or something because you talk sense.

RowlattsFox Posted 10 June 2011 Posted 10 June 2011 Well said fez, I want success as much as anyone but I don't want to go over the top to get it. Paying a player 30k plus a week is crazy for a championship team. Although I didn't realise nugent was on that kind of wage, but the fact he's free compensates that. People moaning about us not spending big money will be first to complain if we "did a Portsmouth" for example.
Les-TA-Jon Posted 10 June 2011 Posted 10 June 2011 well i've been told. Perhaps my haste in posting coupled with my desire for the Yak to be a LCFC player next season clouded my judgement
Fez of Mahrez Posted 10 June 2011 Posted 10 June 2011 well i've been told. Perhaps my haste in posting coupled with my desire for the Yak to be a LCFC player next season clouded my judgement Good man. We can all empathise with that feeling.
Brown Fox Posted 10 June 2011 Posted 10 June 2011 Think he's a cocky twat and never really rated him. Record speaks for itself Bury - 18 in 88 games. Which is roughly 1 in 5 Preston 33 in 94. Which is roughly 1 in 3 Portsmouth 16 in 78. Which is roughly 1 in 5 Burnley 6 in 30. Which is roughly 1 in 5 Much rather have Yakubu and as much as people are worrying about his wages, you don't know what they are so speculating 35k is all good and well, but that is speculating. He may well end up on 20k or even 25k which is what Nugent wants. I trust our owners with our finances. It's not like we've gone all Man City spending 200k a week and £40 million on every player. Yakubu over Nugent all day everyday. Also I am not condoning Yakubu on 40k a week thats stupid, but I'm just saying that you can't say you'd have Nugent over Yakubu when you have no idea what their wages are.
Jollie Posted 10 June 2011 Posted 10 June 2011 David Nugent is rubbish...just look at the brilliant teams he's played for in his illustrious career. did he get relegated with Portsmouth and Burnley?
