Ric Flair Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 Nugent is very good in the air for a lad whose not essentially that tall. We need a new striker to replace Howard in that sense. I want to see us go back to a 4-4-2 more next season in which case Nugent would be a great foil for a stiker such as Yakubu. The level of decent crosses that Nugent converted in that video shows that he is best suited with wingers firing the ball in to him and hopefully that's what Sven is gearing up for next season. Eriksson has always favoured 4-4-2.
Lcfclee Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 Was it sven who gave him his England cap if so he will know what his strengths are surely
Ric Flair Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 Was it sven who gave him his England cap if so he will know what his strengths are surely No, the umbrella man gave it him. Dutch Schteeve
Lcfclee Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 No, the umbrella man gave it him. Dutch Schteeve Ah ok in that case I will reserve judgement till I see him play in the flesh cause Dutch schteeve wasn't the best judge was he
sphericalfox Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 Don't forget this England goal was scored 1 yard out. Bert, that's precisely what we've been missing. Anybody can blast it from 200yds. What we need is a cool and collected striker you can pass it over the line.
filou Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 YES He'd be the ideal partner to Yakubu He'll run all day, got pace, wins headers and will score 15 goals a season Front 3 Kamara Yakubu Nugent WOW Run all day ? So can Donkeys WE NEED > Tevez, Berbatov, Van Persie,
Nick Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 I'm not sure Mr Nugent will be the solution to our problems.
Simmsy Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 I'm not sure Mr Nugent will be the solution to our problems. Partnering him with the Yak could prove a great strike partnership. Nugent running around showing PASHUNN and Yak scoring the goals. Should keep everyone happy.
superfox Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 Good signing IMO especially on a free . If Sven can get him playing with the belief he had at Preston I think its a good move. Premier league experience and another option out wide too if needed. He's got goals in him at this level no doubt about it. Sign him up !
Kitchandro Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 OK, I get the picture. Playing a front three with two strikers wide doesn't work, and our strikers were poor and we scored 76 goals. You must be a genius, so much so that nobody can understand you. You say that like I'm the only one coming out with this stuff. When I am most certainly not. This forum is in it's own parallel universe at times.
Jimmy Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 always liked him for this level has about a 1 in 3 record down here I think
Kitchandro Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 Who blamed the defence? I was pointing out playing 3 up front leaves the defence exposed more than playing a 4 in the middle. The system and the players in front of the defence have a job to do defensively also. The formation of 4-3-3 led to the most goals scored at home for a long long time. It worked, you can ignore the stats as much as you want, but they are there for all to see. This isn't a debate on the merits of Vassel (that you've now turned it into). It's about the system, and mostly last year it worked. Does it need improving? Of course it does, none of it was perfect last year. Just because one player isn't great in that system doesn't mean It doesn't work (going forward) and you call me naive. I blame the defence. You can't blame our defending on the front 3. Like I said, this isn't total football. Yes they should track back but the amount of goals conceded because they didn't is surely minimal. I'm sorry if it seems to straightforward for you but defenders defend and strikers score. The system as in the 4-3-3 wasn't the problem. It was that the wrong personnel for several positions. We didn't have a holding midfielder, we had strikers out wide in the front 3 instead of wingers. We didn't have a striker performing until January and King was our highest scorer (a midfielder). The goalkeepers were poor. The centre back pairing was constantly changed. And a few bad players payed throughout the season. We scored a lot of goals against the poorer sides and had a large chunk of possession at home. Dominating games in possession and pacey attacks will always create a certain amount of chances/goals. It doesn't mean the system or personnel is right. I wasn't saying it doesn't work because Vassell doesn't fit the system, I was just using him as an example. I thought Kamara played better out wide but it still didn't work. Look at the 2 wingers Swansea had this season. That's the standard and type of player we should be aiming for.
Lcfclee Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 But his record for England is quality it's better than rooneys crouch heskey and even lineker 1 in 1 ;-)
Legend_in_blue Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 For the 4-3-3 to work properly the front three need to rotate more. Too often the front three was static, didn't move and we were exposed down the wings far too often when not in possession of the ball. Whether or not it's possible to get the players playing this system effectively both offensively and defensively remains to be seen as last season the balance in the system was never there. You can blame that on individuals if you like, but the system itself was flawed on too many occasions simply because the players in those positions were not mobile enough and did not swap round enough. The players need the intelligence to play the system effectively. It wasn't done last season well enough.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 Nugent for free, would be just about acceptable, as a bench warmer. However his wages would probably be too high for that to happen.
trugerkem Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 by my reckoning nugent is the 46th player we have been linked with. what a squad that would have been. haha
Ozwin Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 Hes never really played in a decent team yet has always done well, I think he'd be quality for us.
Hack Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 I'm not sure Mr Nugent will be the solution to our problems. I don't think any one would suggest he is a the solution to our problems. He certainly could be a participant in solving our striking options. With only Waghorn (nice young player, cant be relied on to lead the line) Vassell (still has good value for the team as a striker/Winger) and Howard (no future at the club) We need a squad of good/decent players up front and across the park. Nugent fits that bill, just like many others that will be named as possible options/rumours. People need to get over themselves in saying Nugent or other players mentioned aren't good enough and are not what we need. Blar, Blar Blar. We need around 20 players capable of playing at a high level in the Championship moving on to being at least adiquate in the Premier league.
gazfox9 Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 Don't forget this England goal was scored 1 yard out. Counts the same as a 25 yard screamer.
Lester LXXIV Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 The local rag down here in Pompey is saying we're looking like signing him too.
funkyrobot Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 Nugent is no better than fryatt. Sven didn't think fryatt was good enough for city, the same rule should apply to Nugent.
escos Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 Nugent is no better than fryatt. Sven didn't think fryatt was good enough for city, the same rule should apply to Nugent. Talent wise, maybe, but I don't think Nugent needs his bollocks tickling by Nigel Pearson before every game!
rico Posted 11 June 2011 Posted 11 June 2011 Nugent is no better than fryatt. Sven didn't think fryatt was good enough for city, the same rule should apply to Nugent. get over it mate
