David Nugent - Signed (BANG!)

This is ridiculous. It seems that everyone is reading everyone elses forums and making 2 and 2 equal about 25. If i was a gambling man i would bet that sven is on holiday with all the players he wants to play for him next season geting p***ed as rats like how he used to with england and having a massive bonding session.

I'd be quite happy if we signed Nugent, especially on a free. Compared to some of the names mentioned in recent weeks, he's one I think would do a decent job for us.

A few years back when we were moaning about "flat footed" Fryatt and "run around a lot like a madman" Hume, the majority of people would have been in favour of a move like this. In fact, I'm sure it was mentioned on the moan-in on many occasions. It was about the same time the fans were going on about David Healy.

On a free, it's worth a gamble. I don't see too many options available and at this level, especially against tinpot, can't see this being a bad move.

I think this isn`t a bad signing on a free! doesn`t set the house on fire, but I liked what Ive seen of him when I saw us play them at pompey last season!

Worked goals wise last year, just didn't work defensively.

No it didn't.

Blaming evervything on the defence is so naive.

Vassell on the wing didn't work one bit. Heskey on the wing would be even worse.

Well it did.

we scored 76 last season and conceded 71 - so it worked as far as scoring goals is concerned but put too much pressure on the defence and so we conceded too many.

Class Championship player, but IMO will need a decent targetman to pair him with - really hope we get Yakubu and him now. Pompey saying deal looking on for his move to City.

Pompey Link

The comments on that link remind me of the comments Wolves fans were making when we signed Akinbiyi. Basically along the lines of "he's absolute gash, Leicester must be a bunch of clowns if they think he's any good."

They're saying things like:

"good riddence i say, a complete waist of space."

"My grandson who is only 5 has a better first touch than Nugent and he can also hit a barn door which Nugent cant."

"Nugent has done nothing 4 us in 4yrs Good riddence to him"

"good riddance. waste of money"

"... awful for a supposedly 'good' striker at this level"

"You are welcome to him.... Just shows that Eriksons judge of club talent is just as good as it was at international level."

"Nugent. hardly prolific. frankly cant see what the fuss is, easily replaced, scored very few."

"Two words................NO LOSS"

"This illustrates why Ericsson was so clueless as England manager!"

and

"Hooray!!!"

Amongst others.

So Vassell on the wing was a success was it?

No. No stats you can come up with can convince me of that.

did i say that?

No.

What i said was that front 3 worked for us going foward because it scored goals, but it didn't work for us defensively because we shipped so many.

Well if you're not saying that I can't see where the debate is coming from.

Strikers on the wing are not effective.

NO LOSS - They only paid £6 million for him, so yes hardly any loss for a now cash strapped club. On the other hand we would be getting him on a free.

I think a lot of the anger being directed towards him stems from a perceived lack of loyalty. But even so, the comments don't bode well at all.

I wonder if Waghorn could get 14 goals given the whole season in the first team?

So why ask the question if you are not willing to accept any answers? It was a success, as far as we scored 76 goals throughout last season with Vassell on the wing for the majority of those goals.

Thats a commendable amount of goals scored.

Sshhh....

What questions did I ask? Apart from sarcastic rhetorical ones that I know the answer to?

I'm saying I don't care what statistics there are, I saw with my own eyes that Vassell was mostly gash on the wing, he was mostly anonymous and he can't cross to save his life. Plus he only scored 4 goals in how many appearances? In reference to another comment, I don't know what it's got to do wiith goals conceded, I'd blame the defence and goalkeepers for that. This is not total football, it's championship football. I judge the forwards on their creativity and finishing.

Statistics about goals scored by our whole team don't prove much, apart from we had some potency and creativity from somwhere. But our top scorer was a midfielder. The stats given do not categorically prove that playing Strikers wide in a front 3 works. They certainly don't prove Heskey and Nugent would work in those positions, even if it did prove Vassell does (which it doesn't) The 76 goals scored takes into account the whole season - the majority of which people were asking for a goalscorer and complaining that the strikers weren't lethal enough. If those particular stats were so important surely these calls for a better strikeforce would all be rubbish too? But no, the level headed among us remember that the strikeforce was a problem for much of the season as well as the defence.

If we're on about goals scored I'd love to know how much possession we had at home, because I'd suggest we should have scored more if you take that into account.

If any of Vassell, Nugent or Heskey are wide in our front 3 next season I'd bet a very decent amount we won't finish in the top 2.

Who blamed the defence? I was pointing out playing 3 up front leaves the defence exposed more than playing a 4 in the middle. The system and the players in front of the defence have a job to do defensively also.

The formation of 4-3-3 led to the most goals scored at home for a long long time. It worked, you can ignore the stats as much as you want, but they are there for all to see.

This isn't a debate on the merits of Vassel (that you've now turned it into). It's about the system, and mostly last year it worked. Does it need improving? Of course it does, none of it was perfect last year.

Just because one player isn't great in that system doesn't mean It doesn't work (going forward) and you call me naive.

Can't see what the problem is? We're getting him on a free, even as a squad player he's better than what we've got here now !

YES

He'd be the ideal partner to Yakubu

He'll run all day, got pace, wins headers and will score 15 goals a season

Front 3

Kamara Yakubu Nugent

WOW

That front three is pacey.

i like the goal at 5:12

There's a youtube video of him. He is now bound to be a failure here if we sign him. lol

So can Tevez, Berbatov, Van Persie,

OK, I get the picture. Playing a front three with two strikers wide doesn't work, and our strikers were poor and we scored 76 goals. You must be a genius, so much so that nobody can understand you.
