Sean St Ledger

Why's That?

IMO I would like to see him In a blue Shirt next term, proven Championship player

And international exp as well

Even as back up he will fit in nicely

I'm not promising he's coming here, but from what I understand he's been in talks with us and as I believe a deal looks possible. I realise I'm going against the might of Fourth_Official et al but I'm just going from what I've been told (and I trust this person more than most others).

The last update on the Irish site was a fee was agreed, (£750k/ £1mil) and it was now down to the player to agree terms. The link is here http://foot.ie/threads/44901-Sean-St.-Ledger/page23 and the poster in question is 'the doc' who has been fairly on the money regarding St Ledger many times in the past, and is generally accepted to be him or someone who knows him well. That was a few days back, no news one way or the other since.

Phil Brown aims to toughen up Preston mentally next season.

The pre-season training programme, which starts later this week, has been designed to help change the mentality among the squad after relegation.

It includes a trip to Arbroath in Scotland next week for a ‘boot camp’ with the Royal Marines, one which Brown himself plans to take part in.

North End will play eight friendly matches as part of the build-up to their League One campaign which kicks-off on August 6 against Colchester United at Deepdale.

Brown told the Evening Post: “We have a tidy pre-season set up.

“We’re exposing the players to some boot camp training with the Marines in Scotland next week.

“That’s a trip I’m very much looking forward to – I’ll be joining in and I’ve been given firm assurances from the Marine officers that they will try and break me!

“We come back for the friendly games against Chorley, Bamber Bridge and Fleetwood. Then we’re back up to Scotland for a couple more games.

“Brian Horton has worked tirelessly behind the scenes getting a decent pre-season together.

“The preparation for League One has to be real – our players have to be ready to go to Hartlepool United on a Tuesday night.

“That is not being disrespectful to one of my former clubs, but it’s the kind of place where you need a strong mentality.

“We need to go there to be difficult to play against and wanting to win the game.

“What I must stress is that the pre-season programme is about preparation and not results.

“Don’t get me wrong, we’re not going to go into these friendlies looking to embarrass ourselves, but the results of them don’t really matter.

“Developing a stronger mentality is going to be a major part of what we do.

“There has been a softness with regards to the mentality of the squad and that was one of the reasons why we were relegated.

“When push came to shove and the going got tough, we stepped away from the plate instead of stepping up to it.

“There were too many illnesses, too many injuries at key times last season and we can’t allow that to happen again.

“The training ground has got to improve as an environment, and the work done on the pitches there means we have a surface worthy of a Premier League environment.”

On the transfer front, the Deepdale exit door seems to be opening for Sean St Ledger as Leicester City step up their interest.

The Foxes have been in contact with North End about the centre-half, and are ready to offer £1.2m.

Former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson is believed to have spoken with Republic of Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni about St Ledger, and the Leicester manager got favourable feedback from the Italian.

At the moment St Ledger is away on holiday which would hold up a deal being completed in the coming days.

Double deal looming for Leicester

Leicester boss Sven Goran Eriksson is closing in on a double swoop for Sean St Ledger and Neil Danns.

The pair were yesterday having medicals with the Championship club.

Republic of Ireland defender St. Ledger, 26, will sign for around £750,000 following his Preston side's relegation to League One.

Free agent Danns, 28, has opted for the ambitious Foxes ahead of Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers after leaving Crystal Palace. He was also wanted by Hull.

They will join Leeds goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel at the Walkers Stadium.

Ambitious City have also had a bid accepted for Peterborough striker Craig Mackail-Smith.

But Bristol City striker Nicky Maynard, another on Sven's shopping list, only wants to leave Ashton Gate this summer for Premier League football.

is he actually any good?

Like he'd get in our starting 11?

Right now, yes, as we only own Bamba and Hobbs, who's almost definitely off to Hull. He's a standard Championship defender really.

I haven't said anything about St. Ledger, as I've not seen any concrete proof that he was coming anywhere near a speculative move to LCFC. But now that there seems be a better inkling that it might happen I'm ready to share my thoughts.

I remember about 3 years ago speaking to a Preston supporting friend about St. Ledger when he got a call up to the Irish side. I hadn't really heard of him, didn't know what to expect from him, and instantly thought that it would be a disaster as he would be replacing injured/suspended CB of Premiership quality in the Irish National side. Brought in a wiley Italian manager, Trappatoni.

I got nothing but rave reviews from my friend about his work rate, attitude, and skill.

So from there on in, I have been watching him from a far, and have seen every International he has played in.

He has has a fair bit of pace, is good at defending set pieces, doesn't give up easily, and though he has a lapse in concentration on occasion(doesn't every defender), you can tell he has the mentality to try and make up for mistakes, his or otherwise.

Also like Bamba, on set pieces he has a knack at finding space in the box and delivering his head to the ball and putting it in the back of the net.

For whatever price we are willing to spend to bring him in, he is a good CB, definitely CCC quality, and under good coaching to iron out some issues, could easily do a job in the Premiership.

Unsure due to the fact he was part of a defence that leaked many goals all season last season and with him being a CB, that means he's halfly responsible as is the other CB. FB can't really be used as these days they are at the other end of the pitch 90% of the time and the GK may be especially bad but theres not a lot a goalkeeper can do when a forward is 1-1 with him.

I don't know too much about him, but with Hobbs probably off we need a CB

He's better than Hobbs in my view, and also puts a few goals on the scoresheet. Good work rate and a team player for sure. I don't know how he might work with Bamba or any other CB we have, but we'll see if we sign him, how he gets on in pre-season. A good signing in my book.

Quote tonight from Brown in the Lancashire Daily Post seems at odds with other reports....

Centre-half St Ledger is strongly interesting Leicester City, with the Foxes reported to have made a £1.2m offer.

Lonergan too continues to attract speculation, with North End looking to let him go ahead of the new campaign.Said Brown: “With regards Sean, there’s a lot of speculation and paper talk about him.

“There have been bids put on the table for him, but nothing substantial enough yet to whet the whistle of the owner.

“We’re going to take our time and give bids a lot of thought.

They want £2m for him.

Well, Bert, if this is true, do you reckon a.) we will pay this b.) it is worth our while?

I think he's worth the purchase, I may think that £2m is a bit steep. £1.5 is his top worth in my view. Another case of a player's team trying top rinse Top & Co's wallet, cos they can.

Did you just put across a point which absolves all but the CB pairing for all goals conceded in the modern game? Did you seriously just do that ?

Brown isn't the most cunning negotiator though is he? In the same article he says...

Brown told the Evening Post: “I think it is a case of people having to move on before we start bringing players in.

“I don’t mean that in a negative way, the relegation side of things just makes things difficult when it comes to balancing the books.

“The transfer market seems to be generally quiet at the moment.

“I’ve got players in mind who I want to bring in, don’t worry about that.

“We’re also having a look at one or two trialists over the next couple of weeks.

“No doubt our eagle-eyed fans who come and watch us train at Springfields will be watching with close interest.

“Things are tight financially and we have to cut our cloth accordingly.”

So if we hang on a little while they'll cry 'Uncle' cos it makes their own plans difficult/impossible.
