Reports appear to be gathering pace that West Bromwich Albion are interested in signing former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves on a pay as you play deal

Makes sense.

Makes sense.

Only benefits the player. If he is fit he will move on the a bigger club paying more wages at the drop of a hat for free!!

Well no.

He would be contracted for say a year or two with a very small basic salary and a large appearance/squad selection fee built in.

That's not pay as you play that's a one or two year contract!!

A true pay as you play will be month to month if that.

So well yes!

Pay as you play never work out, It could in fact work in our favor, depending on how he feels about playing he may be more inclined to sign say a one year contract appose to a pay as you play?

Hargreaves would probably prefer to play for Sven than for Roy Hodgson..

But Hargreaves would rather play premierleague football than championship football...

Exactly right

If it was 2 years we would probably put a clause in there that he doesn't play x amount of games we have the option to terminate the contract at the end of the first year.

I take it he'll be offered some form of contract, where by he'll get a basic of £10k a week, backed by a substantial apperance basis of £20k a game or something along those lines. His contract will then have a clause which will trigger an automatic contract extension once he's reached 20 league games lets say.

Or something similar to the above.

That is, if we've even been in touch with him at all.

No exactly wrong!! I would imagine that is what we will do if it happens but it is not pay as you play!!

Pay as you play is just a term they are using for a contract which is based around a significantly larger apperance fee.

if we could get him on trial at the Austria tourny that would be great. i have a feeling that a lot of clubs are checking him out tho. Sven and ambition work in our favour, championship football doesn't.

I would have thought with him desperate to resurrect his career, he wouldnt be thinking that Premiership is a must this year, he just needs to get back in the game and playing regular

Yeah but do we really need him ? Sven needs an established midfield/ team not a lot of chopping and changing I feel Hargreaves would not figure in too many matches due to his fitness and this could upset the balance .

Does that mean its on hold, or its dead in the water?

Its on hold, I'm guessing. Probably until after the Sweden trip so they can fully test his fitness back home.

Yet more lunacy on the boards!! Please ffs think before you post. What balance would signing an England International nidfielder be upset? We would hardly offer him a contract if he does not pass a stringent medical.

Leicester boss Sven-Goran Eriksson admits he is still in the dark about Owen Hargreaves' plans after holding talks with the midfielder's agent.

Hargreaves, 30, is a free agent after being released by Manchester United and Eriksson is interested in signing him.

But he told BBC Sport: "I've spoken to the agent now. It depends totally on Owen, the ball is in his court.

"I don't even know if he is fit or if he wants to play. If he wants to speak to us, we are more than willing."

The former England manager added: "I have always said if he's fit, Owen Hargreaves is a great player."

West Brom have also held talks with Hargreaves' agent as the Canada-born midfielder looks to find a new club.

Hargreaves has attempted to prove his fitness to prospective clubs by posting videos on YouTube after he played only 39 games during his four years at United following a £17m move from Bayern Munich.

When fit, he was a regular in Eriksson's England squads and holds 42 international caps.

Eriksson's Leicester have been the big spenders in the Championship this summer. The Swede has spent well in excess of £10m, signing Reading skipper Matt Mills for a reported £5m, as well as Kasper Schmeichel, Lee Peltier, Sean St Ledger, Neil Danns, David Nugent and the latest acquisition, Liverpool defender Paul Konchesky.

Albion don't seem that keen to even want to speak to Hargreaves - Sven is keen - methinks young Owen would do well to choose his best option quickly and carefully. Sven don't like being pissed about or thinking he is only second or third choice!

if he is fit he would be phenominal, he is easily one of my favourite players.

i think the only thing WBA hold over us is the premier league, he'll see sense
