phillo Posted 30 July 2011 Posted 30 July 2011 great international not that good for clubs should bang um in , in this league get him in sven
accessory Posted 30 July 2011 Posted 30 July 2011 Shame we don't have teams like N Ireland, Scotland and Macedonia in the division. He was very good, he's not so good now and he's getting worse. Maybe he'd do a job for us this season and I'm happy to sign him but he's no 8.5m player and he certainly isn't a better option than several others we've been linked with. Keane > Maynard by a country mile. Ask Rooney or Defoe (or any other current England striker) how easy it is to maintain a 1 in 2 scoring record in internationals.
Austin Posted 30 July 2011 Posted 30 July 2011 Possibly because he doesn't figure in Redknapp's plans. He could still do a job for a manager who trusts and rates him. Trappatoni would want him to play regular first-team football in order to keep him sharp for Republic of Ireland games. Signing Keane would be a statement of intent by Top and Sven, not just for this season but for others that follow. There is that, but I just feel if he was still as good as he use to be Redknapp would want to keep him. Failing that, surely someone from the prem would take a punt on a striker whos been to lots of top clubs in his career? Especially with a good goalscoring record.
m00nie Posted 30 July 2011 Posted 30 July 2011 No I don't but the signings we've already made haven't signed 3 year contracts to possibly win us promotion and be ****ed off somewhere else .. ? lengths of contract means nothing. . you really think we would/could just sign people on 1 year contracts ?? have a good season they still have 2 years left on there contract so dont need to be sold off cheapily worried about them leaving in frees etc.. the squad he is buiilding is mostly experienced championship side. he will build a premier league team when/if we get there..

I'm sure he will, I agree about the free signings. But people like Mills who cost what he did could be improved on if we go up, but doesn't that seem like a waste of money if we do so?

I can certainly see us signing major players if we get in the Prem, expect our transfer record to be broken several times. Sven and the Thais won't be looking to just survive in the PL they will be aiming higher.
rico Posted 30 July 2011 Posted 30 July 2011 but seriously Rangers and Celtic would not be sure of being the two automatic promoted teams. they are used to just a handful of competitive matches a season not one every week. Some of the teams in the SPL would have difficulty staying in the top half of Division 2 (as in old div 4). i agree there is some fodder in there too !
Raw Dykes Posted 30 July 2011 Posted 30 July 2011 I'm sure he will, I agree about the free signings. But people like Mills who cost what he did could be improved on if we go up, but doesn't that seem like a waste of money if we do so? Mills belongs in the PL, and I'm sure he'll be there before long. Hopefully with us. He's exactly the sort of player we want. Right age, right ability, great potential. He and the club should improve at the same rate. I'm sure Sven sees him as a player who's ambition matches the club's. He's a great investment.

I agree, I just used him as an example because we'd spent X amount on him and IF we got to the Prem he COULD be improved on. I'm a big fan of his and hope he's with us for many years!

I'm a big fan of his and hope he's with us for many years! Ok, I see now. Well I wouldn't worry. If we wanted to sell him (and I really can't see that happening for a long while), I'm sure he'd fetch a fair few quid. If we can turn him into a PL player, then we might even make a profit. Thinking about it, if you had used Maynard or Long as an example instead of Mills, then I would totally agree with you. I think they're massively overpriced, and I am a bit worried that we're in danger of being shafted with the ridiculous prices being thrown about.
sdb Posted 30 July 2011 Posted 30 July 2011 People seem to be forgetting that Keane isn't very good anymore. And was always overrated anyway. I'd take him, but for a few mill max.
Nick Posted 30 July 2011 Posted 30 July 2011 For gods sake, one small link in the Merc. Some bloke on twitter banging on about £8.5m bid for someone and we end up with a load of people thinking Robbie Keane is being unveiled at half time. Sigh. Just stab me why don't you........ *Goes off to find 'Mr. Mister' song - 'Broken Wings' to address Babylon's theft of his beliefs*
Moreton Posted 30 July 2011 Posted 30 July 2011 i've not read the OC in a while so does it actually say in an article that there will be a suprise at half time?
Guest Posted 30 July 2011 Posted 30 July 2011 Keane > Maynard by a country mile. Ask Rooney or Defoe (or any other current England striker) how easy it is to maintain a 1 in 2 scoring record in internationals. Some people are a little simple. We don't play internationals, we are Leicester City. Compare Keanes strike rate a few years ago in the Prem with his recent strike rate in the prem. As I keep saying I'd take him but he's not this super God that so many of you are making out. He's another Edgar Davids - an ex decent player who is on the slippery slope of decline, he can't get a game in the Prem this season and next season he'll be even worse. He's no 8.5m player. Look at it this way. an 8.5m player should be signing at least a 4 if not 5 year contract. Worst case scenario the player is another Ade, whether that's Keane or Long it's a disaster. Best case scenario they bang in 30 goals this season and help us get promoted. Do you want 20 something Long for the next four years or 30 something Keane? Who has the better sell on fee if we don't get promoted? Keane on a year's loan I'm all down for. Keane for £8.5m - take a running jump.

Keane on a loan I would take definitely, Shane Long 7m that will be if it happens I imagine will be a 5 year contract
Ozwin Posted 30 July 2011 Posted 30 July 2011 If we're spending 8.5M or whatever on Robbie Keane I will not be a happy bunny.
Samilktray Posted 30 July 2011 Posted 30 July 2011 I'm sure I read somewhere that if West Ham had stayed up, his fee to move there as part of the loan deal was £4.5 million. Could just be imagining this though

samstown92 Posted 30 July 2011 Posted 30 July 2011 Dont get me wrong i'd love Keane to come here... but where has this all come from, a tiny article? or speculation of some man guessing we put a bid in? i would love to be proven wrong!
ash6290 Posted 30 July 2011 Posted 30 July 2011 if it is keane the 8.5 mil price that is being banded about must be for the whole deal with the signing on fee and wages as no doubt he will most likely be the highest paid player in the league

Happy Fox Posted 30 July 2011 Posted 30 July 2011 where has this figure come from anyway. It came from some guy of twitter who has a friend who is Swedish journalist that has close links to Sven
