I very much doubt he will be staking his reputation on an 18 year old academy graduate however promising. It is a shame and I hope he is given a chance, however a Maynard type is still needed I think. Except Sven played Schemichel, Hart, Johnson and Sturridge a fair few times during his spell at Man City when he was given a lot of money to bring players in. One thing Sven will do is throw a kid in if he thinks they are ready. He's already publicly stated he's got a lot of belief in Schlupp's ability. Some of you might want us fans to chill out about Jeff but perhaps you should tell Sven to do the same as I think Svennis will give the lad a weapon and tell him to go and take bodies again on Saturday.

Whilst I don't disagree he will be given a chance at some point I think we are almost certain to get another striker. I also think Svenis want's us to lower expectations slightly! I personally would be most happy with a 'big name' striker (not necessarily cost) in order to take the pressure and headlines, giving Schlupp time to progress without the expectation. I do however admire your faith Mr Flair and hope you are right, because as a City fan I would love to find a gem of a youth striker. He can play his part like everyone else in the squad and make an important contribution. With his performance yesterday though, I don't see why he shouldn't be ahead of Waghorn and Howard in the pecking order.

Not saying Schlupp is going to have the impact that either of those two did but just thought I'd mention it.
stockyfox Posted 10 August 2011 Author Posted 10 August 2011 It is perhaps not altogether surprising that fans have such contrasting opinions with regard to Jeffrey Schlupp. After all, at this point in time, his name is not even included in the 'Player Profiles' on the Club website. However, he is a German Youth International. Last season, in nine appearances on loan to Brentford, he scored six goals against League Oneopposition like Huddersfield, Sheff. Wed etc. A couple of weeks ago, Charlton wanted to take him on loan. So after last night, other clubs will have taken notice and may well now bid for his services, either on-loan or outright. In today's world of incredible, potty transfer fees, what fee would we now ask for Schlupp? To me, there are parallels with Max Gradel. He had a successful loan spell at Bournemouth, scoring goals for fun. He returned to us and for reasons that I still fail to fully understand, he left Leicester to make a name for himself elsewhere. Schlupp is only 18 and that appears to be the main reason for some fans' reticence. Make no mistake! He has a bright future and I sincerely hope that it is a 'blue and white' future, a Leicester City future.

Fingers crossed, but I remember waxing lyrical about Matt Piper, Tommy Wright (the 2nd), Mattock, Stevenson and other players that have gone on to do f-all! Matt Piper was one of the best players we have produced, the lad was just very unfortunate with his injury

I say 'pinning' because the forum seems to have gone from 200 and something pages of needing Maynard, to 100 ish pages of needing Shane Long to problem solved we have Schlupp, this worries me. I am however in complete agreement that he should be used as part of the squad as you have suggested. In terms of being above Horward and Waghorn et al I think that should certainly be the case, otherwise he might get the message it is irrelevant how well he plays, he just won't be picked! I must say my comments need to be taken with a pinch of salt as I have not seen him play in the flesh yet (hopefully that will change on Saturday), I would just a bit nervous going into the season without a proven prolific striker.
Hollism94 Posted 10 August 2011 Posted 10 August 2011 Reading are a decent team. I can see them finishing top 6 even without Mills and Long. If we had a team like Peterborough or Doncaster on Saturday, then I would put Schlupp in the first XI without a second thought. Reading are strong promotion rivals though, so it's a bit more complicated than that. I would still start him on Saturday though. He deserves it after last night. Evidently, it's debatable and I wouldn't be surprised either way.

I worry that we might get a bit carried away though, but hey I suppose he will have to be given a chance at some point, I'm hoping that is in conjuction with another prolific striker.

I meant to add - that would give Sven a chance to assess whether Schlupp could play a significant role in the goalscoring stakes during this season, and would enable him to reassess to what extent it is essential to bring in a new goalscorer.
