tickler28 Posted 14 August 2011 Posted 14 August 2011 I've been thinking about this today, whether last seasons defence is better or worse than this years and i've bizarrely come to the conclusion that last years was actually better. Now considering Sven wanted to stop leaking stupid goals and tighten up at the back - HOW WORRYING IS THIS? Here's my player to player comparison:- Weale / Ricardo vs Schmeichel / Weale: This is a no brainer from what i've seen so far this season with Schmeichel wins hands down 2010 - 0 vs 2011 - 1 Bamba vs Bamba - This is a close one but think Bamba definitely just shades it Mee vs Mills - Mee was better. Every time i saw him play (admittedly that is mainly on TV (live streams), a few home games and away games in the westcountry) Mee looked class and din't put a foot wrong. 2010 - 1 vs 2011 - 1 Vitor and Bruma vs St Ledger and Ball - Because of vitor and just how class he was last season 2010 shades it again. Bruma admittedly was better in midfield and f**ked up a lot but he had bags of potential (brilliant on FIFA!! ) As for Ledger and Ball. Guess time will tell but when will they play in the league.....is St Ledger not good enough to get into the team but good enough to play for EIRE (what's all that about??). Personally think Vitor on his own is better than the other three put together!! 2010 - 2 vs 2011 - 1 Naughton vs Peltier - This is unfair really because Peltier i think is the jewel in the crown so far and will eventually be brilliant for us. But we all know if given the choice pre season who we would have chosen. 2010 - 3 vs 2011 - 1 Van Aanholt vs Konchesky - Whilst Van Aanholt looks like he should be brilliant like Bruma still had a lot to learn and feel Konchesky is the more secure option. If this had have been Greg Cunningham against Konchesky it may have been a different story but Van Aanholt didn't do it for me so this one goes to the class of 2011. 2010 - 3 vs 2011 - 2 Ok so i have not spoken about injured Tunchev as opposed to fit Tunch nor Pantsil but to early to give analsis on that one. Point to be made though is we had Hobbs last season (all be it out on loan) and he is now kingpin in Hulls defence and will eventually be worth more than the £800,000 we sold him for. So 2010 defence wins 3-2 and the defence was the area we were most worried about. Add this to the fact that at the back end of last season we had Yakubu and Kamara and now just have Nugent...have we improved??? Feel free to disagree with my analysis. I think it's all very well every week Sven bemoaning poor defending but considering the players he's been allowed to buy (internationals and £5 million defenders) there needs to come a time in the next month or so when the finger is pointed at him and not the players.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 14 August 2011 Posted 14 August 2011 Can we have a ban on people making comparisons with our old team until we're at least 6-7 games in and they've bedded in?
Babylon Posted 14 August 2011 Posted 14 August 2011 Mee vs Mills - Mee was better. Every time i saw him play (admittedly that is mainly on TV (live streams), a few home games and away games in the westcountry) Mee looked class and din't put a foot wrong. Stopped reading here. And of course the fact we are TWO league games into the season. Did you watch Mee's shambolic home debut against Millwall? Game after game he started to find his feet, got use to other players etc. Who is to say Mills won't do the same? Here is an idea, maybe we give all the new players a chance before declaring last seasons players better. What is the point in comparing players when they have barely got started?
Guest shearfox Posted 14 August 2011 Posted 14 August 2011 The Bamba this season looks better than the one last season...
l444ry Posted 14 August 2011 Posted 14 August 2011 Strange question. Without the ball, everyone is a defender. A goal can be appear to be a defensive (back four or keeper) mistake when the original problem started before it reaches the danger area. Last season's team couldn't defend itself way out of a paper bag. This season the team are far more solid. Unfortunately the downside to this is the cutting edge is non-existent. Shame we ain't got Emile Heskey. Now there's a man who knows how to play on his own up top!
Guesty Posted 14 August 2011 Posted 14 August 2011 i remember Ben Mee's first home game and he had a shocker. As did Matt Mills yesterday so give him time. I think our defence this year is a lot better.

The reason he didn't play against Madrid was because he arrived late to the match so his place was given to Bamba, who took his chance and hasn't deserved to be dropped so far, St Ledger is a quality defender and will play a key role

lcfcsnow Posted 14 August 2011 Posted 14 August 2011 The best form of defence is attack. We can't score as we've concentrated wholly on the defence and not enough at the other end. The full backs this season don't even offer half as much going forward as Naughton and Van Aanholt/Mee did.

ithuriel Posted 14 August 2011 Posted 14 August 2011 Is the defence better? I'd say yes, but is the attack better? not by a large margin from what i have seen thus far. I still can not understand why we started with two defensive midfielders yesterday but hopefully we will get better.

Personally I thinks Schmeichal and Ricardo was the best combination with our style of play.... We don't know how good Mills is yet..... We have St Ledger, Bamba, Mills, Tunchev as cb and it's better than last year. Vitor though is class above but now the combinations is better. Konchesky better in his position, experienced. Peltier and Paintsil is better than one Naughton. Naughton though is better induvudually(lets see how Paintsil goes on). So the conclusion is that the defence is better and more stabile this season. We had a glimpses from Naughton and Vitor but it's glimpses. We need consistency.

tickler28 Posted 15 September 2011 Author Posted 15 September 2011 Still standing by this? Anyone have anymore thoughts about this thread given we are a few more games into the season now? from what i hear people saying on post match topics (even Sven) looks like I was spot on!
Callabinho Posted 15 September 2011 Posted 15 September 2011 I would be worried if this seasons back four was as bad as last seasons! Anyway it was forever changing Vitor, Mee, Bamba, Bruma, van Aanholt, Davies, Weale, Ricardo, how could we expect stability?
