davieG Posted 30 August 2011 Posted 30 August 2011 OS City's international contingent joined up with their various national squads over the Bank Holiday weekend, ahead of a busy week for the Foxes around the world. Seven members of Sven-Goran Eriksson's first team squad along with two young professionals and two academy players will be representing City on the international stage over the course of the next week, both in competitive qualification campaigns and in friendly internationals. Andy King and Aleksandar Tunchev are likely to come under the closest attention domestically, as both could find themselves up against England in Euro 2012 Qualification Group G. King is part of the Wales squad that host second-placed Montenegro in Cardiff on Friday, before Gary Speed's men face the Three Lions at Wembley next Tuesday. The City midfielder will be hoping to pick up caps number 11 and 12 as Wales look to get off the mark in Group G, having lost their previous four games. Tunchev, currently on loan with Crystal Palace, returns to the international stage after a three-year absence, in another indication that the 30-year-old defender has put his long-term injury problems behind him. Tunchev is in the Bulgaria squad that host England in Sofia on Friday night before travelling to Switzerland on Tuesday. With five points from their first five games, Bulgaria will still harbour outside hopes of qualifying for next year's Finals in Poland and Ukraine, but a win over England on Friday will be crucial to their aspirations. Elsewhere in Euro 2012 qualifying, defender Sean St. Ledger is in the Republic of Ireland squad for their huge double-header this week. Giovanni Trapattoni's men currently top Group B on goal difference, but face both of their nearest challengers in the next week - hosting Slovakia in Dublin on Friday, before travelling to Moscow to face Russia on Tuesday. All three teams have 13 points from their first six games, making this latest round of fixtures potentially pivotal in the group. In qualification for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, Sol Bamba and John Pantsil could both be in action this weekend. Bamba's Ivory Coast, who have already qualified as Group H winners, travel to face Rwanda on Saturday, while Pantsil's Ghana host Swaziland in Accra on Friday. Pantsil then returns to familiar surroundings on Monday when the Black Stars face Brazil in a friendly at Craven Cottage, home of John's former club Fulham. Midfielder Yuki Abe travelled on Sunday to join up with the Japan squad for their brace of fixtures in to open the third round of the Asian qualification section for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The Blue Samurai host DPR Korea in Saitama on Friday before a trip to Tashkent to face Uzbekistan next Tuesday and will be hot favourites to top a group that also includes Tajikistan. Aside from the senior stage, Martyn Waghorn is in the England Under-21 squad for their Euro qualifier against Azerbaijan at Vicarage Road on Thursday and the friendly international against Israel at Oakwell on Monday. The 21-year-old City forward will be hoping to win his third cap at Under-21 level and his first in two years. As well as those senior pros involved in international action, two young professionals should see action for their countries this week. Second-year professional Elliott Chamberlain, currently on loan with Stockport County, is in the Wales Under-21 squad for their Euro 2013 qualifier in Montenegro, which takes place in Podgorica on Tuesday. First-year professional Shane Byrne is in the Republic of Ireland Under-19 squad for their double-header in Slovenia over the weekend, with matches scheduled for Saturday and Monday against the same opposition. And academy pair Joey Jones and Connor Brennan, both members of the current City youth team, are in the Northern Ireland Under-19 squad for their double-header against Switzerland in Ballymoney on Saturday and Monday.
Yojoe36 Posted 30 August 2011 Posted 30 August 2011 Why the hell is the Under-21 game played at Watford's ground? It's a landfill site.

The Doctor Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 Not bad from Waghorn - granted the defending was beyond crap and the keeper had zoned out completely but, for the first time in a long time, he got a shot on target.
Master Fox Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 what the goalkeeper of azerbaijaan? no i think he is just really shit. That makes sense.

One Arm Babba Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 SSL had a pretty good game for Ireland. He was awarded man of the match.
sphericalfox Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 SSL had a pretty good game for Ireland. He was awarded man of the match. Saved Ireland some serious blushes. He's out however of the next qualifier against Russia picking up a yellow card.
wurmer Posted 2 September 2011 Posted 2 September 2011 Saved Ireland some serious blushes. He's out however of the next qualifier against Russia picking up a yellow card. Probably a good thing for us...
shen Posted 3 September 2011 Posted 3 September 2011 Bit of a blow for King that he didn't even make the bench tonight...
davieG Posted 3 September 2011 Author Posted 3 September 2011 OS City defenders Sean St. Ledger and John Pantsil both played significant roles for their respective countries on Friday night, as international week continued. St. Ledger (pictured right) produced a man-of-the-match performance for the Republic of Ireland in their Euro 2012 Qualifier against Slovakia in Dublin, which finished in a goalless draw. But despite an impressive display at the heart of the Irish defence, Sean's night ultimately ended in disappointment, as the Foxes defender picked up a second-half booking that rules him out Tuesday night's game against group leaders Russia in Moscow. It could be a significant blow for Giovanni Trappatoni's squad, who were indebted to St. Ledger for an heroic display, which included a block from point-blank range that denied Slovakia's Marek Hamsik during the second half. The Irish head to Moscow on Tuesday trailing Russia by two points in Group B and still level with Slovakia with three games to play. Meanwhile, in Accra, Pantsil had the honour of captaining his country for the first time as Ghana beat Swaziland 2-0 in qualification for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. Sunderland's Asamoah Gyan and Udinese's Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu were both on target for the Black Stars, who moved three points clear of nearest rivals Sudan in Group I. John Pantsil captained Ghana to victory over Swaziland. Sudan will have their chance to respond on Sunday when they travel to Congo, while Ghana now head to the UK ahead of their international friendly against Brazil in London on Monday. Yuki Abe was an unused substitute for Japan as the Blue Samurai kicked off their qualification campaign for the 2014 World Cup with a narrow 1-0 win over DPR Korea. The highest-ranked team in Asia, Japan were expected to make light work of Friday night's opponents, but needed a late goal from Vitesse Arnhem full-back Michihiro Yasuda to secure an opening victory. In Cardiff, Andy King was left out of the matchday squad for Wales' 2-1 win over Montenegro in Euro 2012 qualifying. The Foxes midfielder will hope to take advantage of suspensions to Craig Bellamy and David Vaughan to earn a spot in Gary Speed's 18-man squad for Tuesday night's qualifier against England at Wembley. Fabio Capello's Three Lions will head into that game on the back of a comfortable 3-0 win over Aleksandar Tunchev's Bulgaria in Sofia. Tunchev, currently on loan with Crystal Palace, also missed out on a spot in the 18-man matchday squad, but will hope to make the breakthrough when Bulgaria head to Switzerland on Tuesday. Martyn Waghorn was on target on his Under-21 debut. International week got off to a positive start for the Foxes on Thursday night when forward Martyn Waghorn, currently on loan with Hull City, scored on his debut for England Under-21s as they beat Azerbaijan 6-0 in qualifying for the 2013 Euro Under-21 Championships.
lcfcnoely Posted 6 September 2011 Posted 6 September 2011 Went to craven cottage last night and sat with the Ghana fans, that was interesting.... Pantsil had the Job of stopping Brazilian wonder kid neymar and he dealt very well with it and overall I feel he looked one of the best players on the pitch and looked like a natural leader after being made captain for the game. He got a great reception from the fulham fans and the Ghana fans love him to, I hope the city fans can get to love him and I feel he will put in performances as good if not better than that for us !
Les-TA-Jon Posted 6 September 2011 Posted 6 September 2011 Andy King just came on against England. Now that the transfer window is closed I'd love him to score their equaliser.
