jack-lcfc Posted 15 September 2011 Posted 15 September 2011 After watching the barnsley game i am thinking about how poor we are from set pieces especially corners, i know we scored from a couple from free kicks earlier in the season. We have Gallagher a natural set piece taker but when hes not on the pitch who should take over? With Mills and Bamba we should look more threatening than we do any thoughts
Narborough_fox Posted 15 September 2011 Posted 15 September 2011 Neil Danns or Paul Konchesky. Richie Wellens isn't allowed near corners he's so shite and them.
Christoph Posted 15 September 2011 Posted 15 September 2011 Yuki abe because he has the best free kicks for us on fifa 11.
Guest MattP Posted 15 September 2011 Posted 15 September 2011 Waghorn  Gallagher is the best of a poor bunch. I expect more of Mills and Bamba to be honest, so far they have provided little threat going forward and are both terrible markers in their own box that has cost us a few goals already.
foxsake Posted 15 September 2011 Posted 15 September 2011 Yuki abe because he has the best free kicks for us on fifa 11. Always use Yuki. Bruma has some good FK stats too.

Mills nearly scored a cracking header against Southampton first half, great leap but unfortunately was straight at Davis who tipped it over. With the right delivery Mills would get a a few goals a season, I'm sure of that.
The Doctor Posted 15 September 2011 Posted 15 September 2011 Always use Yuki. Bruma has some good FK stats too. He's not at the club anymore though. Would love to see Yuki get more of a chance at set-pieces, some good videos on YouTube of ones for his previous club.

Yes, quite true but in the context of Fifa 11 he remains an essential team member. Always getting booked though...
Night Air Posted 15 September 2011 Posted 15 September 2011 Hmm, we've never looked threatening from corners but the free kicks have been good in my opinion.
Father Ted Posted 15 September 2011 Posted 15 September 2011 Unfortunately we havent got a Guppy or Izzet anymore who can deliver the ball with accuracy, pace and swerve. We dont have nobody like Elliott, Taggart, Heskey, Marshall, Walsh who attack the ball from set pieces with aggression nor a Cottee, Claridge or Fryatt to sweep up anything around the keeper. The last 2 big set piece threats we have had are Morrison and Vitor, Sousa ruined one and Sven tried to destroy the other. Before anybody mentions Bamba, what has he done from set pieces apart from Man City and Millwall?

Guest MattP Posted 15 September 2011 Posted 15 September 2011  How so? Sven played him relatively regularly but the lad was ridiculously injury prone. Agree, Vitor was pretty good. Sven does seem to manage to destroy any English centre back he gets his hands on though.
The Doctor Posted 15 September 2011 Posted 15 September 2011 Agree, Vitor was pretty good. Sven does seem to manage to destroy any English centre back he gets his hands on though. I don't think the likes of Campbell and Ferdinand were that bad with England, and wasn't it Sven who gave Micah Richards his breakthrough? Only ones I can think of are Hobbs: who in SGE's defence was near enough completely destroyed by Sousa, Sven just failed to fix the damage done, and possibly Mills although I've only seen the chap play twice for city, in one of which he was taken off injured in the first half, so I can't really judge him yet.

Fair points. Still think Mills will come good if he had solid partner or played in a back three. Bamba has played well this year but he must be a nightmare to have as a partner.
Bugg Posted 15 September 2011 Posted 15 September 2011 I think Father Ted is probably referring to when Sven dropped Vitor after having an outstanding game against Scunthorpe, it must have made him very disappointed. I don't think that Sven "ruined him" though.

I don't think that Sven "ruined him" though. This is what I am referring to. Even more so when you consider that a donkey like Bruma was continually started ahead of him. Imo this cost our play off push last year. We need Vitor back! (But only when Sven has gone.)
Bagworthblue Posted 15 September 2011 Posted 15 September 2011 I'd like to see a return of the Steve Walsh and Tony James style corner. Out swinger towards the far post edge of the box and have Mills, Bamba, Beckford, King all make a run in a diagonal line from outside the box - We scored a lot from that set piece albeit Walsh and James really were good at attacking the ball. It's quite an easy ball to deliver as well - just put it in the right area. After repeating that a couple of times, send a pacy low one in on the front post which will be unexpected.
Lambert09 Posted 15 September 2011 Posted 15 September 2011 Gallagher best of a bad bunch?????????????? Jog on!!!! You will not get better delivery then what gally can produce at this level! We are'nt in the prem yet lower your expectations!
LCFC_FAN_1995 Posted 15 September 2011 Posted 15 September 2011 Gallagher, Abe and Konchesky are the good free kick takers
Fox92 Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 It does my head in that we aim our corners at Bamba. Last season, we saw how dominant Mills was for Reading - if the corner is put in at a fast pace. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJxXKtG74tM It might be our management telling the players ,or it might be players doing it, but we can't float our corners in with Mills in the box. They need to be driven in for him like when he played for Reading. But, going back to Bamba, he wins sod all in the air when attacking the ball. How many goals has he scored with his head? 0 if I recall rightly. If you watch him today, he'll jump over the player, neck down, but if you watch Mills he jumps up and straight. We should aim everything at Mills, not Bamba.
ealingfox Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 ^ Last few times I've been i've seen both Gally and Danns use the flat driven corner, although I might be thinking of the back end of last season rather than the three games I've been to so far this term.
LcFc_Smiv Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Gally is fantastic at set pieces, his accuracy is spot on if he had at least three freekicks in a dangerous position I'd be certain he'd put one away. However I do notice when he is on corners there is the occasional problem that he doesn't beat the first man, and if he does the ball is usually lacking pace and power. I always thought of him as a luxury we can't afford to have, he would be great in a league where you have time and space to create plays, but a league as physical as the championship, questions have to be asked. Non the less he proved me wrong on countless occasions last season and I hope he continues, or at least starts to push on again when he gets back from injury, that's if his first team place hasn't been snapped up.
gazfox9 Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 I think when Gally is next fit and playing a few on here should watch him when he's on corners. At least 2 out of every 3 are abysmal. They either don't beat the first man or go out for a throw the other side. He doesn't seem to put any pace on the ball either. As a few others have already alluded to, if the ball is drilled in it makes it so much more easier to attack, ie just use the pace of the cross and direct the header, as opposed to trying to generate the pace yourself using the neck muscles. When Neil Danns first signed he drilled in a few beautiful corners, however even his of late seem to be a shade disappointing. Martyn Waghorn was another, he managed to smash the ball in, unfortunately it rarely ended up in a decent attacking area! It does seem disappointing, as the OP said, when you have such good players to attack the ball (Mills, Bamba, King, Nugent, now Beckford etc) that we fail at the first hurdle, delivery! Its something I've thought for a while now but this thread has given me the chance to release my rant!!!
AstroFox Posted 17 September 2011 Posted 17 September 2011 Without a doubt, Yuki Abe should be taking some. Like LargeAl says, there are some good examples on youtube of his set pieces. Pretty sure he takes a lot of them in his national side. AF
