Alan Young is right and is being deliberately misunderstood. No team plays with "wingers" today but play with "width". Wingers went out with high buttoned boots and it's strange why some are misrepresenting him. Unless some people are thick of course!

Young's point was that attacking width comes from full backs now. It doesn't, except arguably at Chelsea.

So Ashley Young isn't a winger then? Scott Sinclair and Nathan Dyer? Wayne Routledge? All players who have been part of successful promoted sides in this division and might I add are looking good in the Premier League, Young especially obviously.

Just listening to it on playback. Young is a ****, doesn't matter if they are playing deep, there are tactics to play against it and saying King couldn't play because he was being marked well is bollocks, he's never in the game.

If a team chooses to play this crappy diamond system then the only way that team can get width IS by through full-backs. It's bloody ridiculous to think otherwise mate.

Very true. So the question is, why didn't he buy suitable players for a 4-3-3, or flat 4-4-2?

Ashley Young is a wide player. Is he a "winger" when in his own corner flag area helping his full-back out? The whole concept of a "winger" needs to be defined if a meaningful debate is to be had.

Maybe the man is past his sell by date! I'd like to see Sven manage a team with NO money. All I see is a bunch of expensive individuals. Some you win, some you lose.

Yes, exactly. The original caller's point was that the formation was wrong because we had no width apart from full backs.

Young then tried to shoot him down, saying that all of top teams' width comes from full backs, which is clearly not true.

They play out wide and specialise in servicing the strikers with pace, trickery and crossing.

These wingers are the only players who should be playing out wide in a 4-4-2. They are also, IMO, best suited to being wide in the fron 3 of a 4-3-3, we have tried strikers out there and it hasn't worked.

And yes he is a winger if he's helping his fullback out, he's just helping his full back out, I don't see how that makes him not a winger.

Come on, you know what a winger is.

He was saying how Sven is culpable, as he's put the squad together and spent more money than anyone else in the Championship. How he's bought several central midfielders, how we don't have any width and the way we play puts us under pressure as teams can sit back and soak it up etc. Youngy was in total disagreement, but the lad made his points really eloquently (when I'd have been shouting and screaming!) I think even if you didn't agree with what he said (he said Sven should be sacked) then you should tip your hat to him for how well he communicated his opinions and stuff.

Could not agree more. Loved the way Alan Young was talking about his long journey home along the A46. Alan you did not pay for your ticket infact your wages are paid through our licence fees. Good on Ben. Don't get me wrong I've seen us look worse but I've never seen us look so toothless and clueless. I was Steve Howards biggest critic a limited player on every level but at least he looked like he cared. We need someone or something that can motivate this bunch.

Ben - calmly and eloquently put. :appl:

Alan Young - should be ashamed of how dismissive he was towards that young man. Came across as extremely unprofessional. :(

He really didn't seem to like me did he? :) I'm not one of those guys like the famous 'Andy from Long Eaton' from a few years back, I don't say things just on the wind up. Whatever I said on air I'll stand by and have even offered Stringer et al another chance to ruin my 'credibility' on a future phone in. The only bit I didn't like was when Alan said I had no credibility? I'm not a Derby fan, I don't have a mental illness, I've watched football for 28 years and I love LCFC. Surely that gives me at least a right to my opinion? I guess if you don't agree with the masses you will always be treated like a bit of a 'loon' Anyway on a side note does he think people like having to do this? I'd love nothing better than to have won the majority of our games be sitting top and ripping all my southern softy mates about how brilliant my team is. If the manager was doing a brilliant job I'd say so and I would be the happiest man alive believe me.

Anyway glad some of you found it interesting. I think the last time I went on was with Martin George when MON was threatening to leave over the boardroom split (He didnt like me very much either!)

Mate you was spot on,He made me laugh when he said UTD didn't have any wingers lol

Is obvious that sven's way does work in some games but we really do seem to have no plan b. To get promoted you to play as bad as we did yesterday but still come away with a 1-0 win, all the successful teams have this resilience. We just seem to get hit on the counter at home, even the games that we've won teams have sometimes cut though us and either poor finishing or Kasper has saved us. Pearson turned us into a sponge even though it wasn't always the prettiest to watch.

I think Sven works best with the top top players and that why he's been so successful in Europe. These players have the attributes and most importantly the independence and knowledge to self adapt to a game depending on how it's going. You hear our players saying that they love Sven for allowing them to express themselves and play to their strengths. I'm afraid in this league you need one collective strength that can be tactically policed from one game to the next.

I think Sven should stay at our club and move up stairs in some sort of player aquisition role. We need someone who is going to give this squad a good shake by the neck..

Young always finishes the call by saying 'Call back at the end of the season'.

Well done to the guy for standing strong on what he believes on his point

It may be too late by then, if a work force are not pulling their weight they will get punished untill they do, the same applies to footballers. Alan young will realise how daft he sounded when he watches the highlights.

It was a great call mate, how you managed to keep your cool whilst Young was going off on one and being really unprofessional is beyond me! I'd have been shouting and screaming at him, haha. You can tell he's getting frustrated and doesn't know how to handle it by the way he raises his voice. Brilliant call mate and all points very well made - top man!

I listened to that on the way home in the car and ben came out of that with alot of credit.

Young is seriously deluded....and a shite commentator!

These muppets have to realise that unlike us,the paying public,THEY get PAID to watch that shite and they cant slag the team off too much cos they are within the inner sanctum of the club.

Stringer i can just about manage listening to,but if Young is the best we can do,God help those who have to listen week in week out.

Note to Ben-Go on again today to back up your call.....Try and wind the cvnt up so much he ends up swearing and loses his job!
