It's shocking and sad to see there is still elements of racism in football, as a Leicester fan this is so alien to me, I love my club and love my city with it's diverse cultures and truly believe it makes us special. :scarf:

What a random post! I don't get this. If you felt that way why do you feel the need to post it? Are you trying to convince yourself?

I'm not racist, but I also don't give a fuk whether we're a diverse city or not. it has its good points, it also has its bad points. I just wish that whoever is in our city would speak English as their first language

Agreed. I'd swap City for Country though.

Why? Aren't people allowed an opinion unless they openly declare their love for diversity?

Hold on mate.. They may have won 'Britains got talent' but I don't exactly love them??

lol

Kinda depends if you share an opinion with the likes of the NF...

So basically what your saying is that no one from England can live in our city? Because unless you are raised speaking English then English will never be your first language.

So you're not racist but you don't want to know anyone who can't speak English to a level you expect from them?

There really are better ways of wording certain things

Why's it wrong to expect people who live in England speak English?

No, frankly, if there's someone who's walking around town speaking in their own language, why should I want to interact or feel the need to integrate with them, when they're clearly not that arsed about it themselves?!

For the record, I say the same about the English when they're abroad. I despise it when you've got you're typical English bloke shouting over the bar, 'two pints please mate' at least try and learn the language and make the effort

You're racist.

I'm waiting for samilktrays thoughtful insights into this. Shame Mr Kelly can't offer anything other than an opinion on a poster either

clap clap. Well done Stuart. I can't offer anything further than an opinion on a forum, or on a post that you specifically made. Interesting perception of events. Cloudy. A bit like your viewpoint on this subject matter.

It's not wrong to to want people who live in England to speak English, expect it from them though?? And you said you would like them to use English as their first language, something that they wouldn't do unless they were brought up speaking it. Again, there are better ways of wording things.

So you go on holiday to Tenerife with your friends or family and walk through the streets speaking Spanish to each other? And you would like 2 polish people to walk down the street speaking to each other in English rather than their mother tongue? You are aware how difficult English is to learn?

I work in the motor trade and the manufacturer I work for tends to have a lot of Asian custom and a fair few taxi drivers, a lot of whom are foreign, that may be a stereo typical view but hey, just for arguements sake. I can't speak any of the asian languages so they have no choice but to speak to me in English. They struggle through much the same as an English man on holiday asking for 2 eggs on his all day breakfast in Greek or Spanish. So what exactly is your point??

You're not racist but you don't want anyone in our City who doesn't use English as their first language, regardless of the situation?

I think that the original posters post has been proved to be wrong by some of these comments...

Try living in a foreign country where you don't speak the language and maybe you will have a bit more sympathy, I used to have a job where I spent a lot of time working in Denmark, Germany and Poland, as well as other countries. Should I have learnt all of those languages?

I now live in Spain and teach English, when I first moved there I couldn't speak Spanish very well, and a lot of my friends and colleagues can't speak Spanish very well, but they are over there because they can speak English. If we were no allowed in to the country because we couldn't speak Spanish then they would not have many native Englih teachers out there.

Likewise if we didn't have the levels of immigration we do, we would have a much smaller unskilled workforce in the UK and be poorer for it.

There's a difference between being on holiday in tenerife for a week, and living somewhere (hoping to get a job etc and being unable to speak the language)

When in Rome and all that

So why use your typical Englishman abroad as an example then??

I do sort of agree with what you're saying, but you have a very narrow mind about it all and I feel it is some what clouding your views on the subject. To say you wouldn't interact with people walking down the street speaking their own language, is that not jumping to conclusions that they are just being lazy and don't know any English?

There's two different scenarios. Walking down the town on holiday with your family and standing at a bar ordering a couple of pints expecting the Spanish waitress to understand you.

I speak Spanish fairly well and it goes a long way when the locals hear you making the effort.

English is probably the hardest language to learn, I appreciate that. But surely people living here should at least have a grasp on the basics before arriving here. That's not me expecting too much of them, nor assuming they're lazy.

So if you got offered a great job in Finland but in an English speaking office you wouldn't go because you can't speak Finnish?

Do you think that people shouldn't post on here because they can't speak/write english very well?

Do you think that families should be separated because some of them don't speak English but others do?

Actually English is one of the easiest languages to learn the basics, but one of the hardest to master. Some people especially when they are older find it very very difficult to learn a new language, but if they have a reason for being in this country then they are welcome in my eyes.
