liamsm Posted 19 November 2011 Posted 19 November 2011 Stu, I think you are trying to say that 'foreign' people don't want to learn English? This actually couldn't be further from the truth. Any courses teaching English to non-English speaking peoples are always massively over subscribed and I believe that people coming into the country and wanting to stay are required to go onto courses in basic English. I am very proud of Leicester's multi-cultural heritage and know many Asian and Afro-Caribbean people. My g/f herself is of dual heritage. Try learning about some other cultures. They can be fascinating, the food fantastic and I know some very friendly people. This thread wasn't really about race. I thought it was about the football club embracing other cultures as the City has done? You come across as massively ignorant with your posts and narrow minded in the extreme. Multi culturalism is here to stay in Leicester. Great.. I say it's just a shame that it is mostly segregated and not united
MPH Posted 19 November 2011 Posted 19 November 2011 Not at all. Why would someone want to change the language of their conversation if something being said wasn't rude. If they can speak English pretty much just as well, why revert back when an English person walks into a shop? If I did dislike people who look and sound different then I'd not bother trying to speak Spanish to them when on holiday there! so you DONT dislike people who look and sound different to you.... just as long as they live somewhere else? ok that makes sense. you really are digging yourself a bigger hole, here!!!
dan77 Posted 19 November 2011 Posted 19 November 2011 Cannot believe this topic has gone to 4 pages..... Saturday night? X Factor is on, make love not war! Lcfcstu I do agree with quite a lot of your comments, just the way that you try and put it across is not the best.
davieG Posted 19 November 2011 Posted 19 November 2011 When did I mention any nationality at all? But no, I'm not, though I know what you're going to say, and I'd counter that by saying Wales is recognised as an English speaking country. Twas a joke, there renowned for it in certain parts of Wales - apparently.
Guest Col city fan Posted 19 November 2011 Posted 19 November 2011 it's just a shame that it is mostly segregated and not united A lot of it is these days Liam.. Narborough road.. Lots of different cultures Highfields... Afro Caribbean, Indian, Pakistani, English Melton Road... Lots of different cultures, mainly Indian and Pakistani but still very varied Basically Leicester city is culturally highly mixed The County is still mainly white British
liamsm Posted 19 November 2011 Posted 19 November 2011 They are all are in fact as easy as each other to learn under the age of 18mths. A child can learn up to 10 languages at the same time and differentiate from each language too. However as it's been posted the older you get the more difficult it gets. English has a lot of contradictory rules, and unless you are brought up with these and understand these rules it is VERY difficult to comprehend let alone learn. Also you do in fact need a very basic level of language skills if you are teaching English abroad, but you do not need to be fluent. I know so as I have friends that teach English in other countries. most of their students will have taken a very limited basic course in school or learned from television, and the classes are solely taught in English. Dear oh dear oh dear, surely your not that daft that you thought i was being serious about learning English before i was 2

sphericalfox Posted 19 November 2011 Posted 19 November 2011 Dear oh dear oh dear, surely your not that daft that you thought i was being serious about learning English before i was 2 No I was making a different point, based on the learning of children and the ease of which languages are learned at young ages, but difficult at older ages.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 19 November 2011 Posted 19 November 2011 English as a first language? Heck, there's 100th generation pure Saxon families in Braunstone, Beaumont Leys, New Parks and Eyres Monsell who'd love to speak English properly! NB, I lived my entire childhood in New Parks.
nuttytimmy Posted 19 November 2011 Posted 19 November 2011 Well said Trav. It's not like most people actually use English properly any more. That was, incidentally, a truly awful sentence!

Nobody mentioned speaking English properly, and i would like to know where you get your info for Braunstone and Beaumont Leys (as i have lived on both) not sure about the others but there must a hell of a lot of non Saxon families on these 2 estates NB, I lived my entire childhood in New Parks.
easilee Posted 19 November 2011 Posted 19 November 2011 I'm a Pacifist but I really enjoy seeing Tories get slapped. Go Figure.
kylecoare Posted 19 November 2011 Posted 19 November 2011 I think my french teacher at school was rude and racist, used to stand in front of us blurting out words that we had no idea about!!!! Outrageous in our country cant event talk our language, hang the lot of them, and german teachers!! The racism argument wont go away, because there are too many arseholes that actually think place, colour, sex, money actually matter, rather than just being things thrust at us at birth. we are all the same, i could have been born here, i could have been born in india?!?!? what difference does it make

He's not bald Posted 19 November 2011 Author Posted 19 November 2011 Why would it make us special? if the different cultures mixed and were tolerent of other races beliefs then it could be classed as special, but any community can just dump different races in different corners of its area like Leicester ( especially the council ) that dont make Leicester special IMO Believe me it does, I'm old enough to remember real serious racism in Leicester both at Football and elsewhere in the city, I travel and work all over the UK and Ireland on a weekly basis and I'm so proud that my City is up there as a shining example of racial harmony (I know it's still a work in progress) and I'm not about to name anywhere but there are still locations where the blatant insults would make your toe@s curl!
He's not bald Posted 19 November 2011 Author Posted 19 November 2011 Since when, they even have POLICE spelt in galic on their police cars Oh by the way I forgot to mention that my paternal grandparents were German, my maternal grandfather was French and I was born in South Wales!
I am Rod Hull Posted 19 November 2011 Posted 19 November 2011 Oh by the way I forgot to mention that my paternal grandparents were German, my maternal grandfather was French and I was born in South Wales! I bet the wedding was a hoot. Hope no one mentioned the war....
The Doctor Posted 20 November 2011 Posted 20 November 2011 Since when, they even have POLICE spelt in galic on their police cars There is no such language as "Gaelic", it's a branch of Insular Celtic languages (Celtic languages developed in the British Isles), there are three different "Gaelic" languages - Irish, Scotch Gaelic & Manx. Welsh actually comes under the other branch, Brythonic, alongside Cornish & Breton.
Captain... Posted 20 November 2011 Posted 20 November 2011 So how did the first non English speaking immigrant contribute to the society or the economy Probably by picking cotton Dont really get your point, are you saying people can only be racist if they have a different colour skin? by the way my dad was Irish and we never moaned about racism and there was plenty of it aimed at the iRISH or dont that count because Irish people learnt English years ago when all they spoke was Galic, so if the thicvk paddy's can learn English it cant be a hard language to learn You didn't get many of the points on here, I didn't mention racism I mentioned discrimination, there are many forms of discrimination based on race*, colour, nationality, sex. In essence I was giving a concession to Stu about his dislike of people living in England who can't speak English, whilst I disagree with him at least there is some sense to his dislike towards these people, whereas other forms of discrimination are completely illogical. *which is a misnomer as there is only one race of humans, the human race, regardless of colour and place of birth we are all the same race.

Far Post Gerry Posted 20 November 2011 Posted 20 November 2011 Try moving to China and speaking the lingo from day one. Tough crowd.

I'm old enough to remember when the Asian/ Paki's first came over in large numbers and i remember paki bashing and the like happening (i didnt join in) but i still dont see much racial harmony in our city, but i do read a lot about racial attacks and i'm sure it is not all published
liamsm Posted 20 November 2011 Posted 20 November 2011 Oh by the way I forgot to mention that my paternal grandparents were German, my maternal grandfather was French and I was born in South Wales! And the point is? Are you saying because your paternal grandparents were German, your maternal grandfather was French and you for all your sins was born in South Wales that you cant be racist ? (baffling)
