acooling08 Posted 22 December 2011 Posted 22 December 2011 http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/16301357.stm 'Match of the Day pundit Alan Hansen has apologised after describing black players as "coloured" during Wednesday's programme. He was discussing racism rows involving Luis Suarez and John Terry and his comments led to criticism on Twitter. "I unreservedly apologise for any offence caused. This was never my intention and I deeply regret the use of the word," said the 56-year-old. The ex-Liverpool defender is nearing 20 years as a panellist on the programme.' Can someone explain to me why this would offend anyone..? Fair play to him for holding his hands up though after getting complaints.
Guest ttfn Posted 22 December 2011 Posted 22 December 2011 Stupid comment but it is clear he meant nothing by it
Salieri Posted 22 December 2011 Posted 22 December 2011 He's from a generation where 'coloured' was an acceptable, even 'polite' form of terminology. For me he shouldn't even had to apologise, there was clearly no offence intended.
marko Posted 22 December 2011 Posted 22 December 2011 Can someone explain to me why this would offend anyone..? Fair play to him for holding his hands up though after getting complaints. I'm with you, I just can't see it as an offensive remark. Did you see Rohan Ricketts' reaction? He was less than impressed. It seems nowadays you can't say anything without offending someone.
Head Honcho Posted 22 December 2011 Posted 22 December 2011 He's from a generation where 'coloured' was an acceptable, even 'polite' form of terminology. For me he shouldn't even had to apologise, there was clearly no offence intended. Exactly
MPH Posted 22 December 2011 Posted 22 December 2011 Well a humble person will always apologize when someone is offended... no matter if there was no offence intent. He wasnt MADE to apologize he WANTED to apologize so i think he did the right thing. However... Its a shame that this led to complaints... He clearly meant nothing by it and... with risking fear of the wrath of the FT massive, ( for SOME politically correct people) its no longer mixed race its dual heritage, its not a black board its a chalk board... someone no longer fails a test its deferred success... where will it stop? But by aplogizing so quickly he nipped it in the bud before someone could get too carried away by it so fair play to him.
Guest Bilo Posted 22 December 2011 Posted 22 December 2011 No offence intended at all, listen to what he actually said rather than isolating one dated term and shouting him down as a racist. Coloured might be seen as offensive now but Hansen is 56 and will no doubt have grown up being taught that this terminology is acceptable.
acooling08 Posted 22 December 2011 Author Posted 22 December 2011 I actually thought 'coloured' was a more polite way of describing a black person. I thought black people didn't like being called black. I'm 18 not mid 50s!
munf1987 Posted 22 December 2011 Posted 22 December 2011 The world has gone mad. I just dont understand how it can be seen to be offensive, i'm in my early 20's and this term has always been acceptable.
Salieri Posted 22 December 2011 Posted 22 December 2011 I normally try to avoid these sort of threads because they are a bloody minefield! BUT, it is ludicrous. For starters black people refer to white people as white yet referring to black people as black was deemed racist/offensive therefore the term 'coloured' was introduced. Now that is deemed unacceptable too, it's madness. Maybe someone can set me straight but for the life of me I cannot understand the fuss. It's not exactly a Big Ron moment is it?!
Narborough_fox Posted 22 December 2011 Posted 22 December 2011 I'm 15 and coloured is the term which I see as the most respectful. Obscene that he has to apologise, it's not like he's used a racist term or used it in a racist way. The world has gone mad if what Hansen has said received complaints.
leicesterisme Posted 22 December 2011 Posted 22 December 2011 Some sad people sit at home waiting to pounce on things like this all the time and send in a complaint as fast as they can. I'm sorry, but if that's what their life has resulted to then it's quite a sad state of affairs.
Salieri Posted 22 December 2011 Posted 22 December 2011 Former Spurs player Rohan Ricketts tweeted: "Is this Alan Hansen guy taking the f****** p***?? I'm not coloured??? He is part of the problem when using that word. We are BLACK Alan! Wtf Yes Rohan, but calling people black was deemed offensive not so long ago! **** off.
Guest ttfn Posted 22 December 2011 Posted 22 December 2011 I'm 15 and coloured is the term which I see as the most respectful. I agree with the sentiment, but "coloured" hasn't been acceptable to most people for a while. Interesting that people (including myself) seem willing to give Hansen the benefit of the doubt for using a term he was brought up on but not Suarez. I guess it goes to show that it's all about context.
MPH Posted 22 December 2011 Posted 22 December 2011 Yes Rohan, but calling people black was deemed offensive not so long ago! **** off. im sure this will open up a can of worms but no one is actually black, and no one is actually white but hey ho.... never mind....
One Arm Babba Posted 22 December 2011 Posted 22 December 2011 What is the right term to use to describe a non caucasian person that isn't asian? The worlds gone pc mad.
Salieri Posted 22 December 2011 Posted 22 December 2011 im sure this will open up a can of worms but no one is actually black, and no one is actually white but hey ho.... never mind.... I happen to agree with you and skin colour shouldn't be an issue full stop, we're all part of the same (human) race after all. I'm only responding to this thread as i'm genuinely shocked at the (mock) 'outrage' expressed by Ricketts, Collymore etc and their moronic followers.
Yojoe36 Posted 22 December 2011 Posted 22 December 2011 The fvck?! If you want to point someone out and you say "The black one over there" it's classed as fvcking racist. White people are being shat upon
Mike the Metal Ed Posted 22 December 2011 Posted 22 December 2011 He's used an outdated term, apologised, world keeps turning. Nothing to see here people.
Bugg Posted 22 December 2011 Posted 22 December 2011 Who the **** is Rohann Ricketts? Complete overreation, what Hansen said was not meant to be offensive and it shouldn't be deemed offensive either, Mr Ricketts and anyone else offended needs to grow up and realise that if anything, Hansen was trying to be polite.
Captain... Posted 22 December 2011 Posted 22 December 2011 What is the right term to use to describe a non caucasian person that isn't asian? The worlds gone pc mad. I think if you are talking to one them, then "you lot" is acceptable otherwise "them" is ok... I said this on the Suarez thread, that by jumping on someone for expressing the right sentiment but using the wrong word you just end up with people not wanting to discuss these issues, i'm pretty sure that MOTD will just steer away from talking about it in future. As I also mentioned in the Suarez thread Lee Dixon's sideways looks at the camera as Hansen insulted the whole of the non white nation and accidentally re-introduced slavery was hilarious.

To some of them it's almost offensive for anyone coloured white to breathe at all. All racism is bad, but some is more bad than others!
AdamN Posted 22 December 2011 Posted 22 December 2011 Former Spurs player Rohan Ricketts tweeted: "Is this Alan Hansen guy taking the f****** p***?? I'm not coloured??? He is part of the problem when using that word. We are BLACK Alan! Wtf No Rohan, it's you and everyone else that takes this attitude that are part of the problem.By crying foul every time someone does or says something that was never intended to offensive, it merely provides fuel for the knuckle-dragging right wing groups such as the EDL and BNP, who can use incidents like this to 'prove' a point about "PC gone mad". Show comments like this to someone, and they'll say "oh, they've got a point actually".It's been said already, but the choice of wording by Hansen was perfectly fine, seeing as it was obviously used in a non-offensive manner. He hardly 'Ron Atkinsoned' his way through a punditry segment, did he? In an ideal world, if I were Hansen then I wouldn't apologise at all. I'd explain what I said wasn't intended to be offensive so anyone who takes it that way needs to have a little rethink and come back when they're being less idiotic. Unfortunately that'd probably land him in hot water, so I can understand why he's had to apologise. And saying all that, who gives a fvck about a few people getting offended over nothing? Rohan Ricketts now offends me. So we should ban the cvnt from Twitter.
Dan Posted 23 December 2011 Posted 23 December 2011 These kind of beauts fvcking moaning at this are the exact reason I don't go OTT with anti-racism, I'm not racist but I don't wish to associate myself with these fvcking do-gooder, trouble-causing little twats.
