Chelsea's ambitions

Recommended Posts

Just been thinking about Chelsea's ambitions for the rest of this season and how thIs will affect their team selection versus city. If they win tonight will they put out a "weaker" side? If they lose will they see the FA cup as their main target or a top 4 place in the league. Tough game before and after playing us so the line up will be interesting. Either way their side will be a big challenge for us. Give us your thoughts

If they lose tonight then I can imagine the FA Cup would be priority + 4th spot so I can't see them putting a weakended team out against us... although they do play Man City 3 days later so you never know... although what ever team they play it will be strong.

If they lose tonight the optimist in me thinks they will be demoralised and drained and will struggle to lift themselves for lowly Leicester and any knocks will be rested for the game against Man City and the fight for fourth, the pessimist in me thinks they will be fired up and determined to win something this season and the FA cup is their only chance.

If they win tonight the optimist in me thinks they will be tired from the exertion of beating a very good Napoli side and will rest players for Man City and the celebrations and will distract them from the challenge we present and their arrogance will lead to them not preparing properly, the pessimist thinks they will come into the game full of confidence and belief and wipe the floor with us.

I agree with all of that. Think the first 15 minutes of the game will shape how the rest goes. If they score early I can see it being embarrassing. Obviously Di Matteo loves the FA cup having scored in two finals so he will take it seriously I would've thought. Such a big game (for us) lol

Chelsea have already won the FA Cup three times in the Abramovich era. The Champions League is the trophy he and the fans crave above all others.

If they win tonight, the fixture schedule becomes more crowded and a cup semi-final becomes an unwanted distraction.

If they fail, then qualifying for next season's tournament becomes even more imperative (not least because of European FFP rules) and they'll be more likely to rest players for the crunch clashes against Manchester City and Spurs next week.

Both scenarios are equally favourable for us. But in order to capitalise, we'll have to play like we did last night and they'll have to play like they did at home to the brummies.

I can't imagine they'd want to risk losing to the like of us and adding more pressure and demoralisation to their season whatever competitions they're left in.

I hope they put out a strong side, hopefully it'll fire our lot up even more.

Lets be honest they could probably play their 3rd string players and still be hot favourites to beat us

Don't think they know what their strongest team is at the minute

Hopefully this is the case...

The optimist in me says that the players will rise to the occasion as we usually do against the higher achieving clubs this season and perform a coup de grâce. The pessimist in me says Torres hat trick.

I'll have what the pessimist in you is drinking lol

We're more likely to see a Beckford hatrick at the Bridge than one from Torres.

Either way, tough game which we at least have a chance of winning.

They lost to Barnsley in 08 and still got to a Champions League final.

I bet their fans would prefer a 4th-place finish to another trip or two to Wembley - especially if they might get drawn against Spurs, Everton or Liverpool.

I imagine Di Matteo will have something to prove unless he's been ordered otherwise.

Make no bones about it... Chelski will be up for Sundays game. They too have had an indifferent season and will want to make a point to their fans and the broader footballing world.

I believe they will play their strongest side and really go for it.

Of course I hope I'm wrong but I can see us getting mullered.

The only way they might be 'less bothered' is if they go through tonight.

If not, the FA Cup will be their only chance of silverware.

And Robby DiMatteo may well be sniffing after the permanent managers job which will provide further incentive.

We all follow the Chelsea,

Over land and sea, and Leicester.

Flying high flying high... Keep the blue flag flying high..

Countered with: 'up yer arse, up yer arse, shove yer blue flag up yer arse'

lol

I think they do the 'one man went to mow' thing as well, start at about 20 and work down for fookin ages. They always used to do that anyway.
