Why doesn't Pearson play him as a holding midfielder?

Almost every city fan has thought about this at some point or another. So why has Pearson not at least tried it? I just can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work. Defensively SSL and Morgan are better CB's but Bamba is too good to be sitting on the bench. We have tried playing all three in the same line up but it means one has to play as a right or left back. The only other option is we play 3 centre backs with wing backs like the O'Neil days but thats never gonna happen with 4-4-2 Pearson.

Danns is the main midfield man at the moment and needs someone to sit and tidy up while he attacks and supports Nugent and Beckford. Drinkwater will do that job well but Pearson seems determined to play him wide right. Against Chelsea today Bamba made 2 or 3 little runs out from the back and got our players on the attack, the problem was that he was then out of position and left Morgan to cover. If we had Morgan and SSL behind him I think he would do some real damage. He could be our Yaya Toure.

Thoughts?

Next Season I am thinking potentially;

Schmeichal

Peltier

Morgan

SSL

Konchesky

Bamba

Drinkwater

Danns

Schlupp

Beckford

Nugent

Hibs played him in a defensive midfield role with good success but I'd worry he's wander out of position and end up frolicking about in or around the opponents penalty box. Much like he does now tbh when he plays CB.

Maybe change the name of this to something like "Ideas for next season" or something similar..

Agree, the team you've posted there in my eyes is shit hot, providing they gain consistancy.

Schlupp will be huge next year, mark my words.

Noooooo. No. No. He's not a good footballer, especially not good enough for midfield.

He switches off, his positioning isn't the greatest even when he is paying attention. He can be prone to ball watching, he's not even a good passer. Add to that his clumsiness. He really has no attributes required of a CM except maybe strength.

Guy is a clown

Still living off his debut goal Vs ManCity

Some people love him because he smiles (?) or because he can dribble

I don't give a fvck, I want my defenders to defend... Ivanovic for Chelsea was a rock today, as soon as he went off & was replaced by Luiz who can dribble we had a chance, loads of chances.

As for moving him around the pitch, it can occasionally work, but he isn't a holding midfielder in a million years (think Barry, Parker, Carrick, Meireles).. if anything because Bamba's game is basically dribbling, he's winger, but probably not a very good one either.

No one can play with him, just ask Hobbs, Vitor, Bruma, Mills, SSL & now Morgan. He's an absolute liability.

Cash-in & GET RID!

Personally I like footballing centre halves and for that reason will always prefer Bamba over Morgan. To me when someone like Bamba is beaten or in trouble he has more chance of getting out of it whereas if Morgan fails on his intial dut he'll struggle to escape i.e his bookings against Derby and Cov. Just my opinion, everybody's differs in football.

this comes up regularly, bamba has said he doesn't like playing in midfield, and its the arguement of square pegs in round holes.

and just because it works on fm/fifa, does not make it amazing idea.

Bamba had a very poor game today, and cost us goals. But let's not over-react. He has great strength, pace, control and the ability to turn defence quickly into attack. I recall opposing fans coming on this forum and saying how solid he was (think Brighton and having Mackail-Smith in his pocket). He has looked out of sorts since being dropped after a bitter loss in the ACON final. He's not playing well, but when back on his game he has the potential to be a top defender. Let's not get all worked up over it.

Dont see where a CDM will fit into Pearsons style of play, he loves his 4-4-2. Unless that means going back to Svens diamond, with Bamba holding and Danns supporting Nuge and Becks.

I personally beleive that if Matt Mills sorted his distribution out, he'd be the best CB in this division by a mile. He defends like a defender should do (i.e. throwing himself at shots to block them) and doesnt try to dribble out of defence and leave massive gabs at the back

Football is a team game and a tactical game.

Why do you think it is that a team such as Swansea is punching well above its weight in the Prem? It's not based upon the general ability of their players vis a vis those of other Prem teams.

Instead it's about their way of playing, their tactical ability and Rogers knowing which players to sign to slot into the style of play adopted.

Gylfi Sigurdsson being the latest example.

Leicester City DO NOT defend as a collective, as a team. We give the ball away in all areas of the pitch, beginning with the forwards, all too often. This then puts pressure onto the back five who can't always cope.

To my mind, the problem isn't necessarily Sol Bamba, Matt Mills or Peltier. Instead, and we have seen this time and time again this season, we lose the ball too easily and then get over-run through the middle.

Until we learn to keep the ball better, to defend as a unit and to stop the opposition simply exploiting our physical weakness right across the midfield four, we ain't going anyway.

Tactically today, we again weren't very astute.

We STILL need some midfield steel and a playmaker to keep the ball more frequently.

If this is achieved, it's my belief that the back five will flourish.

What I'd like to know is if he actually had studs in his boots today. Kept falling on his arse, which led to their 4th / 5th(?) if I'm right.

Bamba is not technical enough for that position. I like him as a CB but his self conifidence is his own ability with ball at his feet is at times mis-guided. Very wasteful and totally to blame for 2nd goal as he left the defence vulnerable by committing himself forward. Don't get me wrong I stil think he's a good defender.

Just watching the game again. Guess where Bamba was for Mata's chance in the second minute. That's right, in their half and 40 yds behind the play. Kind of sums it up really.

Long term I think it's a poor idea, I'd probably get rid of him though I think our other options are better and we could make a good profit. However, with SSL getting torn apart today I would have been tempted to bring pelts on into RB, drop SSL to CB with Morgan and played Bamba just in front of the defence which is where a lot of the space for Torres and Mata (first half) was. Could have ruffled a few feathers which is one of the things I thought we were poor at today, Torres wouldn't have been as good if we were up in his face quicker and harder. Like I said though it would have been a temporary fix and I think we should cash in in the summer.

Funny that. I work with a shedload of Palace and Brighton fans, all of whom rate him as one of the stand-out centre halves they've come across this season, for the right reasons.
