Trav Le Bleu Posted 8 April 2012 Posted 8 April 2012 Consumers will change their buying behaviour as a result of pretty packaging, ad campaigns, lifestyle associations, health benefits, weight loss links, price cuts of alternatives and far more - as long as it is personalised and the benefit is clear to the ignorant consumer. They won't change because of some nebulous event happening miles away to people/places/animals they haven't met/seen first hand. But form links for them and they'll buy into it. Hell, I used to market & sell product for Satan's own company! People are easily led. Interflora?

Hell, I used to market & sell product for Satan's own company! People are easily led. Well then. We just need a shit-hot salesman to travel to Asia and convince a few locals that: a) Killing endangered fluffy creatures for trinkets is really really naughty b) Some of their medicinal practices are extremely cruel and based on quackery c) Consuming a rhino horn is the same as eating their own hair d) Knocking down forests and fishing the seas clean isn't a good long term plan (Might need a round the world ticket for this one as it applies to everybody) Do you reckon you could pull that off? Can't be that hard surely.
Rincewind Posted 9 April 2012 Posted 9 April 2012 There may be a time in the future when all that is consumed is nutrition pills or synthetic foods What fun that will be. 'Another bacon butty pill love.' 'Oh no, I'm full up couldn't eat another thing.' Many animals may virtually die out anyway if land is used for housing. There would be some on reserves and if a species is growing too much they would be cut down to size or placed near lions. Seriously though it is difficult to change what has been going on for centuries. It is not the local people but big business that has taken over. When Europeans first settled in America they about wiped out the buffaloes The native Americans just killed them for clothing and food and were allowed to breed normally. Only the weakest were caught. Now hunters are able to cull even the strongest of a species which stops the natural selection process. You can't fight money and greed.

Zingari Posted 21 April 2012 Posted 21 April 2012 Kenya rangers shoot dead five suspected poachers Wildlife rangers have shot dead five suspected ivory poachers during a gun battle in western Kenya. Two rangers were hurt during the battle in West Pokot county, said officials from Kenya's Wildlife Service (KWS). They said 50kg (110lb) of elephant tusks and AK-47 rifles were recovered. Kenya has recently taken a more aggressive stance against poaching as it combats a surge in demand for ivory from Asia in spite a long-standing ban on the international trade. KWS spokesman Paul Udoto said on Saturday that rangers were determined to make poaching "a high-cost, low-benefit activity". The KWS says about 100 elephants are killed each year in Kenya by poachers. Ivory from elephants is often smuggled to Asia for the use in ornaments, while rhino horns are used in traditional medicine. http://www.bbc.co.uk...africa-17798914
Number 6 Posted 21 April 2012 Posted 21 April 2012 Hate the ivory hunters and those morons who pay to go and shoot beautiful creatues just so they can put its head on their wall! I accept hunting for food, but some of these excuses are just disgusting.

Rincewind Posted 21 April 2012 Posted 21 April 2012 Well from what it says it was a shoot out so if they were better shots we'd be reading a different story. Whether the hunters could have been arrested elsewhere without bloodshed is another question.
Zingari Posted 21 April 2012 Posted 21 April 2012 How do we all feel about humans being killed for the sake of a few elephants.... Good question! i think we might get the full spectrum of opinions on that one BBQ
OzFox Posted 22 April 2012 Author Posted 22 April 2012 How do we all feel about humans being killed for the sake of a few elephants.... You're kidding right? 7 billion of us rising rapidly to 9 billion. Versus a few thousand (insert animal of your choice). Seems a tad unbalanced don't you think? A little unfair maybe? It's a shame they only got five. Also a shame they don't put a bullet in the Chinese importer
OzFox Posted 8 November 2012 Author Posted 8 November 2012 The slaughter continues. Across Africa a war against the continent's largest animal has reduced the elephant population to dire levels. The epic slaughter has led to warnings that if poaching continues at its current rate, elephants could be wiped out across Africa within the next 10 to 15 years. Tens of thousands of elephants are being slaughtered each year, a rate higher than any time in the previous two decades. "We can't stop it on the ground it is too big, we don't have enough resources. "You would have to have a huge army and it still might not work and you have to stop the demand, you have to raise the consciousness of people in the far east to tell them, 'do not buy ivory, it kills elephants'." http://abc.net.au/news/2012-11-08/african-elephants-reduced-to-dire-levels/4359764 All this so a few people can have nice trinkets. For instance Filipino catholics like to have ivory crucifixes and can't make do with wood or porcelain

Seems a tad unbalanced don't you think? A little unfair maybe? It's a shame they only got five. Also a shame they don't put a bullet in the Chinese importer The only solution to your concerns is for you not to breed, and to find others like you and convince them not to breed. Please. For the sake of all of us!!
