Trav Le Bleu Posted 29 April 2012 Posted 29 April 2012 Who is going to get picked? It's been stated that no one going to Euro 2012 will be picked (so England and Ireland current squad members are out then) and all the players have to be under 23, but there are 3 players of any age allowed too. So who would your squad be? Remember, you can pick from any of the 4 British nations. I'm assuming a squad size of 22. My team: Goalkeeper Ben Amos Rhys Taylor Jason Steele Defence Kyle Walker Shane Ferguson Danny Rose Ryan McGivern Danny Wilson Adam Matthews Paul Hanlon Martin Kelly Midfield Jack Rodwell Gareth Bale* (unfortunately turns 23 2 weeks before the olympics) Aaron Ramsey Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain Darren Fletcher* Jordan Henderson Joe Allen Forward Peter Crouch* Connor Wickham Sam Vokes Sammy Ameobi I don't claim to know a lot about under-23 international football and I've tried to include at least a couple of players from all the home nations to keep everyone happy, maybe sometimes at the expense of possibly better players from other nations. I'm sure someone else can come up with a better team (Pearce, hopefully ) and the 3 over 23 players that won't be going to Euro 2012 could be the key (I'm guessing Crouch won't be going, seems out of favour since joining Stoke.)
Webbo Posted 29 April 2012 Posted 29 April 2012 Doing a bit of research it looks like an 18 man squad. I tried to find the 80 man shortlist but I can't. Steven Fletcher is likely to be in the squad though.
Dylan Posted 29 April 2012 Posted 29 April 2012 If Kyle Walker is not even in the squad for the Euro's I'll be seriously surprised.
Guest Bilo Posted 29 April 2012 Posted 29 April 2012 Incidentally, it doesn't matter if players turn 23 before the Olympics. The rules state that they need to be under the age of 23 at the start of the qualifying tournament, same as with the UEFA under-21 tournament.
Stevosevic Posted 29 April 2012 Posted 29 April 2012 England players and Gareth Bale. Over 23's: Beckham, Giggs and Rooney,
Trav Le Bleu Posted 29 April 2012 Author Posted 29 April 2012 England players and Gareth Bale. Over 23's: Beckham, Giggs and Rooney, Rooney will be at the Euros and for me there's better than Becks nowadays, even amongst the under 23s
Trav Le Bleu Posted 29 April 2012 Author Posted 29 April 2012 I think it will be interesting. There will be a lot of the world's best footballers there.
Guest Bilo Posted 29 April 2012 Posted 29 April 2012 World class players and stars of the future in the UK over the summer? Yes, I do care.
Finnegan Posted 29 April 2012 Posted 29 April 2012 I don't give a ****. There was a good article on the BBC but I can't find it now. It was essentially making the point that it's hard to get excited about things like football, tennis and basketball at the Olympics because they're no way near the pinnacle of the sport's accolades. Which is right, really, the Olympics are like the Johnstone's Paint Trophy of international football. I'll watch a few games, there'll be some good, young players on show for sure. But I'm not at all excited and I certainly don't "care a hell of a lot." Far, far more interested in the athletics when London roles around.

Regarding Olympics, football isn't the main priority for me. Athletics and some of the field events are most enjoyable to watch or keep up with at the Olympics. I still care about the football though a substantial amount for similar reasons to Bilo. I agree with the reasoning above that for some it could be hard to get excited about simply because of the volume of the sport that's played all year-round (more or less) anyway.
Finnegan Posted 29 April 2012 Posted 29 April 2012 It's not really about the volume of the sport, it's the fact that it matters very little to the athletes themselves. Footballers want to win the World Cup, the Euros, the Champions League. I'm sure they'd be proud to win the Olympics but it's not what it's all about.

At the end of the day, it's a chance to represent your nationality. The other 3 competitions listed are much more important to a footballer, yes I agree. Playing at the Olympics though can be good for a player's career, or at least developing it given that majority of players are under-21.
21st Century Fox Posted 29 April 2012 Posted 29 April 2012 It matters to a lot of players that maybe won't ever get a chance at a major tournament. It's also good as a football fan to see some of the stars of the future. Also any tournament is a shop window for some players.

LCFC FOX Posted 29 April 2012 Posted 29 April 2012 Forster Gunter Wilson Evans Bertrand Beckham Scholes Wilshere Bale Rhodes Zaha subs: Steele , Naughton , Sinclair , Cleverly , Rodwell , Sterling
Cropwellfox Posted 29 April 2012 Posted 29 April 2012 Would expect to see Joe Allen and Scott Sinclair in the squad. Maybe Adam lallana too.
RonnieTodger Posted 30 April 2012 Posted 30 April 2012 Think it will be an 18 man squad (it is on Football Manager anyway). Bit strange to have so few players. I think Pearce will have at least 1 representative of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Shane Ferguson, the young Newcastle LB is U23 so he could be a decent shout. Bale and Ramsey are within the required age range too.
