marko Posted 25 May 2012 Posted 25 May 2012 http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18205513 I can't see any other alternative myself, other than a replay.
Dan Posted 25 May 2012 Posted 25 May 2012 The bloke is a total plonker and how fvcking convenient is it that he's said this after years of it being in practice, that he's consulting with a German legend following that person's club losing a final on penalties. The bloke's an utter disgrace and how on earth he's still in a job is well and truly beyond me. Absolute detest.
stripeyfox Posted 25 May 2012 Posted 25 May 2012 If you accept that a replay is not possible, then penalties are as good a way as any of deciding a match. Whichever method you use (and there have been loads suggested over the years) one team is going to feel "unlucky".
Nick Posted 25 May 2012 Posted 25 May 2012 I think the solution is very simple. At the end of extra time, the game should continue non stop and every five minutes, a 1KG weight should be attached to the legs of every player. This should continue every five minutes until a goal is scored.

Haydos Posted 25 May 2012 Posted 25 May 2012 Can't see many other options. Maybe 1 or 2 more periods of 15 minutes and the penalties. Tbh 120 minutes of football and the scores are level, it's settled by a test of nerves, composure, skill and a little bit of chance. I don't understand those who say it's a lottery. 90% of the time if you take a good penalty you will score. If you take a shit one the keeper has a much better chance of saving it and if you put it wide or sky it then that's your fault for not being good enough. It's fairly simple.
Dan Posted 25 May 2012 Posted 25 May 2012 We all know for absolute fact that Blatter wouldn't have said this if Bayern won. It's absolutely certain. He's a corrupt **** and the day he dies will be a very good day for football.
21st Century Fox Posted 25 May 2012 Posted 25 May 2012 I'm sure they used to use a different (yet shitter) method in the States, because they didn't like games that ended in draws (even regular season games) the idea was to have a player dribble from the half way line and attempt to take it round the keeper or shoot, like a cross between a penalty shoot out and FIFA Arena. I'm pretty sure this was one of the changes the Americans were trying to push on FIFA before World Cup 94, as well as breaking games into quarters to allow for more TV advertising. So lets hope Franz doesn't consult any Americans on the issue.
Captain... Posted 25 May 2012 Posted 25 May 2012 The timing stinks of the usual crap... ...buuuuuut, he has a point, and looking at a better way to settle a contest is not a bad idea (asking a German to do it may be). The problem with the penalty shoot out is that it gives the underdog no incentives to take risks and encourages them to play out a draw. Now there are plenty of options, My personal favourite is after a normal period of extra time 3 players are removed and they play 8 on 8 for 20 minutes, similar to what they did in the sevens tournament the City youth went to, or every player that has been booked in normal time has to leave the pitch. All options will have a flaw and no option is perfect, but there may be a better option than penalties, so why not explore it, Golden goal didn't work it made everyone more defensive, Silver goal just confused things, and ultimately penalties still decided things more often than a Golden/silver goal.
Zingari Posted 25 May 2012 Posted 25 May 2012 How about deciding it on some sort of points based system, like boxing.? Points added for corners won, goal attempts on target, deductions for yellow/red cards and fouls conceded.
MrSpaM Posted 25 May 2012 Posted 25 May 2012 What are they going to do if the replay ends in a draw as well? just keep playing the same match over and over until somebody wins? If they take penalty shootouts away, the only viable solution is just to play the game out until somebody scores. Cant see the tv companies being happy with that though.
I am Rod Hull Posted 25 May 2012 Posted 25 May 2012 Start extra-time with 9 players each and then take a player off every 5 minutes.

Bit more tense and skill based than just booting the ball from 12 yards but it wouldn't change the way the game was won. I'd prefer it to penalties I think
21st Century Fox Posted 25 May 2012 Posted 25 May 2012 Extra time with monkey substitutes replacing a player from each team at 5 minute intervals.
leicesterlad1989 Posted 25 May 2012 Posted 25 May 2012 I think both managers should compete against each other on Fifa at the end of 120 minutes and the winner takes all. They could show it on the big screens at the stadium, maybe they stand in the centre circle. We could then see an influx of managers aged from 15-30, I'd fancy myself to beat Fergie on Fifa.

Bit more tense and skill based than just booting the ball from 12 yards but it wouldn't change the way the game was won. I'd prefer it to penalties I think This would massively favour the team with the best keeper in one on ones, with penalties the keeper has a very minor role, it is all about the taker, and obvisouly that rotates so no one team has a big advantage by having one great penalty taker, and there is not such thing as a keeper that is great at saving penalties. How about a massive game of wallie to decide it, or heads and volleys?
AdamN Posted 25 May 2012 Posted 25 May 2012 The problem with the penalty shoot out is that it gives the underdog no incentives to take risks and encourages them to play out a draw. ... I suppose teams have to play to their strengths. Besides, if you're a professional footballer then you should be more than capable of sticking a penalty away. It may be a 'cruel' way to go out of a competition, but both teams get a fair crack at it. You rarely see a 'good' penalty get saved, barring massive heroics from the opposition keeper. As for the 8v8 idea, I reckon it sounds ok in principle but after 120 minutes, most of the players on the field are absolutely knackered as it is. Reduce the amount of players and they'll have even more running to do. I suppose then it'll become a case of "who's fittest" rather than "who's best". Extra time with monkey substitutes replacing a player from each team at 5 minute intervals. Now this I do like
21st Century Fox Posted 25 May 2012 Posted 25 May 2012 After extra time managers have to compare penis sizes, the biggest wins. It'd solve the inequality problem for black managers and keep traditionalists happy as it would rule out there ever being female managers.
leicesterlad1989 Posted 25 May 2012 Posted 25 May 2012 Managers arm wrestle? Royal rumble between players in the centre circle? Players 'WAGS' mud wrestle? Team relay around the pitch?
I am Rod Hull Posted 25 May 2012 Posted 25 May 2012 Bingo, the first player to shout "house" wins the game.
Haydos Posted 25 May 2012 Posted 25 May 2012 How about a massive game of wallie to decide it, or heads and volleys? Heads and Volleys is a great shout!
