Latest FIFA world Rankings July 2012

To be fair, the rankings are weighted towards the competitive games between tournaments, purely because there are more of them. And in those games, England have an exceptional record. The rankings main practical application is to determine seedings for the major tournaments, and England's record in qualifying for the last two tournaments warranted the top seeding we were given at Euro 2012. France and Italy, for example, have not been as good, and therefore slipped in the rankings and became second seeds.

The mere fact that Italy went on to perform to the best of their ability and make the final does not mean that seeding system failed.

I don't think anyone actually thinks those rankings reflect what would happen if there was a massive knockout tournament involving all the teams, for example, they're just a way of quantifying the performance of teams over the previous four year period.

I can think of at least 8 countries that are better than us at the moment. These rankings are pointless

How would you get a system like that to work? These rankings im sure are based on results over the course of the last x years. Someone on the first page pointed out that England have lost 6 in 48 which is decent. France have been low in the rankings ever since WC 2010 but in a few years they'll probably jump up quite abit in a short period of time if the continue to win games. Holland have fallen alot because of their poor Euro's campaign, and teams like Brazil have nosedived behind all the teams that have played in the Euro's (obviously)

I'm not saying there should be a system for it. Just saying the rankings are pointless

Uruguay aren't that good. Dear me.

I think they actually are, thought they performed brilliantly at last year's World Cup and they were pretty stunning in winning the Copa last summer as well.

Cavani/Forlan/Suarez is as good as anything in the world and despite criticism of the defence people would be lying if they didnt think Godin, Cacares and Peirera wouldn't get in the England side.

I cant say I've watched Brazil recently but are they really 1 ranking better than Greece?

Us in 4th place, jesus christ. lol

Not that good at all at the minute, struggling in major tournments and come up well short against Argentina and Uruguay at the minute. Paraguay and Venezuela both comfortably were their equal last year.

They've only made it to the semifinals of the previous World Cup, won the previous Copa América, and will breeze through qualifying for Brazil 2014. They're awful.

I think we are probably around 8-10th best really, but can't complain with 4th helps with seeding...

Behind the powerhouses of Panama lol

****s sake.

Blas Perez would sleepwalk to a hat trick if Panama were to meet Scotland.

Clearly didn't say they were awful. Forgot I'm not allowed an opinion.

There's that Mr Blatter and Mr Platini conspiring to do England down again.

They've properly got it in for Scotland.

Now, now... It's called hyperbole. People like to use those in internet arguments from time to time, in case you haven't noticed.

You can have your opinion, but without even thinking about the FIFA rankings. But when watching Uruguay games from the past few international tournaments, and where they have finished in those, it's certainly fair to consider them to be one of the best sides in the world. Their semifinal in 2010 is clearly no South Korea/Turkey 2002-like fluke.

Not saying they're not one of the best sides in the world. Personally don't think they're that good. Which is all I said.

Define "that good."

Have another look at the World Rankings. Uruguay are placed behind Spain and Germany--by a long way in the points total--but only closely ahead of England (Uruguay are certainly a better team now), and a few lengths away from Portugal (close, but I'd say Uruguay deserves it), Italy (unclear: maybe not on current form, perhaps certainly not if you only consider this summer, but then again, Uruguay aren't playing a tournament this summer), and Argentina (Uruguay have certainly outperformed Argentina recently in qualifying and competitions). Netherlands (beat Uruguay in 2010--great game)shit this summer), Croatia (really?) and Denmark (really???--though they outperformed Portugal in qualifying) take the next spots. Do you still think Uruguay's ranking is inflated? And if yoy still insist on not-picking, you can only really argue out Uruguay perhaps being one spot--maybe two, if you argue brilliantly--higher than they should be. But that still doesn't mean Uruguay being ranked 3rd isn't unfair, and I'd certainly give them a top seed for Brazil 2014 if I ran the show and the draw were done today.

Easy there brackets! lol

For me i'd say the top three teams in the world at the minute are Spain, Germany and Argentina.

Uruguay are a team if England were playing I'd be disappointed if we didn't beat them. Not saying England are great there before you try and claim that. Regardless of rankings I think there are better teams than Uruguay.

There's two teams head and shoulders above a quite tightly knit group.

I love you Bert but we are not in the same league as Uruguay at the minute let alone expected to beat them.

Only Hart. Cole, Terry and Rooney would stand a chance if getting into their 11 from ours.

I think you've proved my point.

But as for England, if we don't consider friendlies, any game against Uruguay would be a massively important game--particularly as both teams are looking at top seeds in 2014 if they keep their form up--where a loss would be devastating to either side. I think Uruguay are the better team, but it's not unreasonable to suggest that England can beat them.

I'm not arguing that Uruguay's present 3rd-placed ranking should be set in stone. They are certainly one of the world's best sides; I have no qualms with that, and you agree. I also have no qualms with Uruguay being the 3rd-highest ranked team, but what I'm really arguing with you is that nitpicking over whether or not Uruguay should be 3rd, 4th, 5th or whatever is stupid. Also, now that you mentioned it, I would certainly hesitate to throw Argentina--yes, even with Messi and all--above Uruguay so clearly based upon results from the past 24 months.
