Fox92 Posted 11 July 2012 Share Posted 11 July 2012 Have you seen him play for the academy/reserves? Because while I've only seen him the once against Swindon he looked more than capable of doing the role that Howard has been used in. Not for the academy. Only say him for those minutes he played against Swindon in the FA Cup. He did look like he could hold the ball up, but I meant looking at an experienced target man who we know can hold the ball up...
MGLCFC Posted 11 July 2012 Share Posted 11 July 2012 I think Tom Hopper has the potential to be a very good target man after seeing his debut against Swindon, but much like Harry P and to a certain extent Jeff Schlupp, doing it regularly in the first team as opposed to the academy is a different matter. Perhaps this is all the more reason to run a reserve team - let them play at a higher level week in week out, against oppostion that is made up of youth players, seasoned professionals who can't quite get in the first team and those coming back from injury. The other option is to send them out on loan for a season in League 1 and risk losing them as the enjoy regular football at a lower level.
Ric Flair Posted 11 July 2012 Share Posted 11 July 2012 We seem a bit thin on the ground in defense when Peltier goes so I can see at least a centre half and a right back coming in. We must make sure we have a ball winner in midfield, Drinkwater and Danns are both creative and King will score goals again if he's shaken off his injury problems. Matty James may well be the ball winner and play maker, I've no idea. If he's not then we need one and it seems we're very overcrowded in that position already. Wellens must go but I fear he won't. Gallagher needs to go, we need a new left winger too as Dyer is too inconsistent but good for back-up. Other than that the squad looks good enough to me. Not fussed about another new striker. Vardy will be quality if he doesn't bottle it, Nugent is class and Beckford will be more consistent this season I believe. We also have Waghorn who could be brilliant again or could be crap but he deserves another crack.
Raw Dykes Posted 11 July 2012 Share Posted 11 July 2012 I'm not sure we are overcrowded in central midfield. We got caught with our pants down when we had to stick Bamba in midfield, and we only had one less CM than we do now. If we're playing 4-3-3, 4-5-1 or any other formation with three CMs at any point, then I think we will need at least five CMs in the squad. As for a target man, what about new signing Jacob Blyth? I know he's mainly going to be playing for the u21s, but maybe he'll be good enough to be our plan B if it's just for the last 10-15 minutes of some matches. If it was up to me, I'd definitely sign one more centre half for first team contention and one more winger. Then I might look at getting a target man, and maybe a specialist attacking midfielder or a defensive midfielder. Not sure about another right back, even when Peltier leaves - depends how good Moore is.

smokey Posted 11 July 2012 Share Posted 11 July 2012 We do need another centre-half now that Bamba, Mills and Tunchev have gone, maybe even two. I'd go for one for the 1st team, and then one for the future. A target man for the bench would be my next priority. After that, I think one more winger, or a specialist CAM or defensive midfielder, and I'd be happy with the squad. Agree mate. We need two Centre Halves, a Left winger and a target man and squad is complete. I sort of agree with a defensive midfielder but with Danns, James, King, Wellens and Drinkwater competing for two places in the middle i cant see it happening. MGLCFC Posted 12 July 2012 Share Posted 12 July 2012 Right Back - De Laet, Moore and at a push St Ledger can play there.
foxfanazer Posted 12 July 2012 Share Posted 12 July 2012 Right Back - De Laet, Moore and at a push St Ledger can play there. I suppose so but doesn't look particularly strong. Has De Laet been bought to be primarily a Right back or centre half?
MGLCFC Posted 12 July 2012 Share Posted 12 July 2012 De Laet said in his interview that right back was his preferred position - whether NP plays him there, who knows
