The Future of the Football Fan

Recommended Posts

Posted

Football MP, Steve Rotheram (best known for his Hillsborough speech www.steverotherammp.org.uk) is compiling a parliamentary report on the future of the football fan. He wants to know how fans can become more involved in their clubs and what you think clubs should be doing to make themselves more accessible to fans.

If you would like to take part, or if you have an idea about what you would like the future of the football fan to look like, please get in contact with me (Steve's press officer), Gavin Callaghan on [email protected] or on twitter @gavin_callaghan.

Steve is a former bricklayer and is the only MP to have two Premier League football clubs in his constituency. He passionately believes that football is a working man's game and that we need to tackle the problem of disaffected fans sooner rather than later.

Regards,

Gavin Callaghan

Go to the US see how fans are treated and do the same here....that'll be nice.

Give supporters who wish to stand a certain end (a whole end) so those who wish to sit can do so elsewhere.

Allow fans to have banners, flags and smoke/flares...even if this is restricted to a certain area (like the states).

Cheaper tickets.

Allow fans to sell the tickets for that section to fund tifo (happens with some clubs in the states)

beer in the stands.

Thats all I'd want. lol

Pretty good blueprint there from PR.

I did 3-4 games with the Angel City Brigade a few years back and it was fantastic.

Nice. They're not even considered that good, portland is just football fan bliss, if we could get near that in england it would be amazing....never happen of course.

No a Sounders fan said pretty much the same, probably shows how far we have dropped over here in terms of what football fans can do that I found them brilliant.

Not seen much of Portland, I'll have a wander around Youtube.

That, my friend, sounds like football nirvana.

More chance of Ian Huntley passing a CRB check than it coming true though.

Yep its sad when yanks have more of a grasp of what football culture is and how important fans are to it......of course if they had the restrictions we do it would be shit there too.

Youtube isnt the best place to look but I guess thats all you have really lol. The noise is amazing, 20,000 is all they can get inside their stadium but it sounds like 100,000...add to thjat they are shit and bottom of league makes it even more impressive.

They do some amazing tifo too:-

its as close to it that I've experienced. Going to games in the states was part fun, part chaos, part frustration at why it cant be like that here. Becase if it was the atmopshere would blow most other countries out the water..and thats one of the worst things, if the english fans were just given some freedom we would have the best fans around.

Wage cap resulting in cheaper tickets.

And, the football league and Premier League to have more power than Sky.

The yanks have better atmosphere at football!!!!!

Kill me now.

not all clubs but some.....it used to really piss me off too,,,,now its a mixture of frustration and amusement.

Amazing video.

Just. Amazing.

If the KP was allowed to be like that, we'd be getting 30,000 a week every week without fail.

Men, women and families were clearly involved and loving what was going on, loud atmosphere, much fun to be had and no nastiness at all.

I'd love to hear one articulate reason why this shouldn't be allowed in England.

Make sk1/2 safe standing and boom, you have a kop.

Absolutely.

I'd love to see the whole of the Kop become a safe standing area, make the KP a real wall of atmosphere and noise.

That's the way it should be.

I would assume that it increases the risk of trouble.

TBH i think it would, I still dont see if fans were allowed such freedoms there wouldnt be idiots who would spoil it.

Portland as far as I'm aware hasnt been involved in trouble even with their seattle rivalry, when you consider how much alcohol is consumed its pretty amazing.

There are however incidents in the MLS but they arent put on the front pages you only have to have a tiny incident in england and its blown up all over the media, this scares the clubs.

The sad thing is I can only see things getting worse in england but things will only improve in the states, portland group is famous and rather than rival clubs distancing themselves from large supporter groups who hold a lot of power they actually want similiar groups at their clubs.

I can see in the next decade the US being compared with germany for atmosphere, culture and fan involvement.

I was at Orlando City - Stoke a couple of weeks back. Even they have a safe standing section with a 'supporters section' in it.

It's not to hard to understand, standing means more noise. So, as most people have said I'd love safe standing!

The one thing I have read many times about the MLS is the lack of edge...nastyness between fans.

Well surely thats one of the reasons they are allowed such freedoms, I would rather go to a game and have a load of fun and not think I'm being filmed or watched by stewards every second, being allowed to wander around, not having to sit exactly where I'm told, if I want a beer and watch the game I can etc etc....

This it seems isnt good enough and without the edge its not worth it....this is what we're dealing with....fans seem to want an air of violence and thats why I believe if we were given the freedom the yanks have we would ruin it.

p.s. People seem to like the portland vid...bear in mind they are the worst team in the mls, rock bottom of the league...imagine how it would be if they were good.
