Asha Posted 10 August 2012 Posted 10 August 2012 English football kicks off tonight with one match in the Blue Square Premier: Hereford v Macclesfield. Let's use this thread for any comment or discussion on non-league football. Any one going to any non-league games this weekend? Or following any non-league teams this season?
Corky Posted 10 August 2012 Posted 10 August 2012 I wonder how the clubs playing tonight feel, given this was a Football League fixture last season? Good chance to wipe away the bad memory or will they still remain?
Guest Bilo Posted 10 August 2012 Posted 10 August 2012 Grimsby and Mansfield look like very good bets for promotion in BSP, both have signed well. You can expect big things from Forest Green and Luton too. That division is the most open it's been in years so I'm quite looking forward to it starting. Below that, Chester and Halifax look decent in the BSN. It should be a good season.

I'm at Mansfield tomorrow so it'll be interesting to see how they're shaping up, although hopefully they'll have a bad start : So many big former league clubs in that division now.
Fox92 Posted 10 August 2012 Posted 10 August 2012 There are many big teams sadly playing at non league level now. I hope Mansfield and Grimsby both win promotion. Mansfield are one of my local sides, and I've got a soft spot for Grimsby. I want Luton to come up as well, and we should see a challenge from them especially, but for the last few season's they seem to have fallen at the last hurdle.
Asha Posted 10 August 2012 Author Posted 10 August 2012 So Hereford beat Macclesfield 2-1, nice strike for the winner from Marlon Jackson. That, along with other results, means my first accy of the season comes in too. Super! Macclesfield still without a win in a competitive game in 2012. That's quite a staggering statistic.
Mike the Metal Ed Posted 10 August 2012 Posted 10 August 2012 Boston United are now one of my parents local clubs, and I enjoy standing on the Town End, so I'll probably make the trip down when they play Hinckley on the 21st, work permitting. Might look into seeing Canvey Island a few times when I move to Southend, or some of the multitude of London-based non-league clubs.
Soar Fox Posted 11 August 2012 Posted 11 August 2012 My friend plays for Alfreton in the BSP Connor Franklin local lad who used to be at Leicester. So will be keeping an eye on how they are doing this season.
Basingstoke Fox Posted 11 August 2012 Posted 11 August 2012 I'll be keeping an eye on Basingstoke Town over the coming season. They had a terrific end to their campaign last year but sadly lost to Dartford in the playoffs. They don't start until this Saturday coming though for some reason?
Asha Posted 11 August 2012 Author Posted 11 August 2012 Mansfield 0-2 down 13 mins in Ended 4-3 to the 'Port. Mansfield defensively were truly horrific. It's like they've spent their whole budget on strikers and completely failed to address the defensive problems. No offence, and it's just one game, but it's hard to imagine a team as title contenders when they're conceding four at home to Newport County. For the record, the second goal from Tony James was a cracker and one of the contributing factors to Mansfield scoring three was that County goalkeeper Lenny Pidgeley wasn't at all convincing, and was probably at fault for a couple of the goals.

Jesus Christ, he has dropped down the leagues!
Leicesterpool Posted 11 August 2012 Posted 11 August 2012 An amazing game at Liberty Way 5-4 to Ebbsfleet sadly but a good performance from boro, could have been 5-5 but boro missed a pen.

Tielemans63 Posted 12 August 2012 Posted 12 August 2012 I'm praying that Kettering's season isn't quite as disastrous as the previous one. Still, it'll be tough to get out of the Kebab House Number 2 Premier Division or whatever it's called, particularly when we can't name a full sub's bench!

Damn, I wanted Mansfield promoted. I didn't think Newport were that decent though, it is only one game though as you said. Lenny Pidgeley has dropped abit. I remember him being at Chelsea, then at Millwall. Some players just drop off the radar.

Or get rid of Ladak. Or rid themselves of the banned Rolls. Or prep a playable pitch.
Asha Posted 14 August 2012 Author Posted 14 August 2012 Newport easily dispatch Nuneaton 4-0, and top the BSBP after Gamweek 2.
Corky Posted 14 August 2012 Posted 14 August 2012 Stockport look to have recovered from their dismal three years of misery.
Guest Bilo Posted 14 August 2012 Posted 14 August 2012 A good win for them tonight at Grimsby. Nice to see they appear to have turned a corner.
Guest MattP Posted 14 August 2012 Posted 14 August 2012 My boys the Amber army have a great start, this could be the year. Jefferson Louis, he scores when he wants.
Corky Posted 14 August 2012 Posted 14 August 2012 Newport easily dispatch Nuneaton 4-0, and top the BSBP after Gamweek 2. Leicesterpool will be furious.
