The Year Of The Fox Posted 15 August 2012 Posted 15 August 2012 Did I miss something or am I just boring, but what was so funny about all these 'pokey' chants. Like 'pokey wants a transfer' if thats someones definition of banter then borin hell! Anyway, we should keep nugent and beckford together which is what I think will happen. I can't see Vardy taking anyones place. Hes still young and we can't weigh our hopes and expectations on someone whos never.played at this standard before. Itd have a detrimental affect on his development. Plus, you do have to keep these big name players happy. Nugent and Beckford would walk into any other championship 11 and probably wouldnt hesitate in doing so if dropped for a long period of time. Vardy is a new signing and surely because of his experience at this level (or lack of it) cannot be expected to be depended on from the first game. I think Vardy started tonight in hope of him getting a goal and a confidence booster which he did. Not because NP considers him first choice striker
beemeroo Posted 15 August 2012 Posted 15 August 2012 We have quite a warped sense of what constitutes a young footballer on this board. Vardy is 25.
The Year Of The Fox Posted 15 August 2012 Posted 15 August 2012 Still unproven though. Im sure you get my drift anyway. Not knocking Vardy, he's looked quality from what I've seen. But anyone expecting him to be the leagues top goalscorer will be disappointed IMO
beemeroo Posted 15 August 2012 Posted 15 August 2012 Oh yeh, I know what you mean. It's just we had this with Peltier. 'He's young, blah blah'. The difference being Vardy shows a lot of promise.

I know, but NP has already said every single player will be required next season. Pretty sure Beckford and Nugent would be less happy being a bit part player than Vardy. I just don't want to lose any of them thats all!
Sods Posted 15 August 2012 Posted 15 August 2012 Went last night and was very impressed. Never looked like conceding and when the game progressed the more football we played, lots of runs of the ball and the link up play was fantastic. We dominated the game and the counter attacking stuff we played was fantastic. Drinkwater was stand out player for me with Beckford not far behind.
Ric Flair Posted 15 August 2012 Posted 15 August 2012 I think Pearson see's Vardy as first choice, but who knows. He'll not hesitate to drop under-performing players as he's a lot of options, especially up front.
Salieri Posted 15 August 2012 Posted 15 August 2012 Disappointed with Nuge's reaction. First game of the season and only a cup game and he's already whingeing. It's good that he's eager to play but to do well this season we are gonna have to rely on the entire squad, players will get dropped and will just have to work hard and be patient, everyone will get their chance. He's apologised now so hopefully we won't see a repeat as he is still a key player for us.
CosbehFox Posted 15 August 2012 Posted 15 August 2012 On current form? What half a game? Most of pre season plus last night. You are allowing your overall argument to cloud (which I agree with). Nugent looked very rusty last night whereas Beckford looked fresh and eager....his passing in particular was sharp.

Did you miss the games that Vardy and Nugent also played well together? I'm not letting my argument cloud anything, the season has now started and Beckford will be judged on what he produces this season. The point is it's a bit premature to be comparing form from a couple of 45 minute performances.

He's not apologised for whingeing, he's said sorry to those who took it the wrong way, it is a league cup tie at Torquay, it is not the first game of the league, I think NP took it as another friendly, not necessarily playing his full strength first team, it might be, but if this had been after the league had started, then the context would be clear and nobody would think that it was whingeing. It was a cup match against league 2 opposition, worryingly, for the rest of the league, that was probably not our strongest team. I would expect Danns, Nugent and Knockeart, and one of SSL or Whitbread to strengthen that team. I may be wrong and NP may have told Nugent he is 3rd choice, but I doubt that.
Guest ttfn Posted 15 August 2012 Posted 15 August 2012 Most of pre season plus last night. You are allowing your overall argument to cloud (which I agree with). Nugent looked very rusty last night whereas Beckford looked fresh and eager....h is passing in particular was sharp. Beckford was no more than "ok" last night. Looked good off the ball and as you say passed it nicely when he got it under control. He also nearly scored an absolute belter near the end. But he squandered at least 2 extremely presentable chances ( you've got to be in the positions to miss though, granted) and his first touch was repeatedly poor (again). The latter point is ingrained into the Beckford package though, so maybe it should be disregarded to some extent. Also, once again you have to question the value of a performance against a League 2 side in assessing who is the right man to have up front for a 46 game Championship season. Having run his nuts off, out-scored, out-assisted and generally out-played Beckford last season, it would hardly be a surprised if Nugent felt pissed off that he was being left out.

Can someone please tell me what is so great about Neil Danns and why he's nailed on for a first team spot? He's a hard worker but from what I've seen of him, he doesn't have much else in his locker. James and Drinkwater look a much better partnership so far. I think if you replace Dyer with Knockaert and Moore with Whitbread, that's our best 11.

Will need to see more of James, I thought he was decent against Sunderland but has had mixed reviews last night. Danns adds strength and energy to the middle, his ball retention needs to improve though, if he had that I think he'd be great for us.

The point is it's a bit premature to be comparing form from a couple of 45 minute performances. The one game that everyone was praising that partnership was against non-professional opposition...although that's a weak argument considering who've we have played. We will agree to disagree but I would go with Beckford/Vardy. First point agree because after the first thirty minutes our strikers had time to turn and run towards the goal which in Beckford's case is much preferred. Second point, agree but one issue last season was the lack of competition for Beckford/Nugent. Hopefully it gets the best out of them.
CosbehFox Posted 15 August 2012 Posted 15 August 2012 If anyone complains that we are defensive, I'll nut them....speed merchants across the team, on occasions we will be playing a near on 4-2-4

Before his second red card last season, against Hull, and subsequent injury he was our best midfielder by far, I've not seen much of James, and I do like Drinkwater, but Danns on form was the best midfielder at the club, we will see on Saturday, but I would expect NP to bring Danns and Nugent. This is no criticism of James, or anyone else, I just think that his experience and energy will be needed much more against Posh than Torquay, which was probably seen as an easier game to get the likes of James, Moore, Vardy, RDL some games under their belt.

I'm not saying everyone is wrong, I just can't see what he brings to the team apart from a bit of energy? Like others have said, his ball retention isn't great. From what I've seen his passing and tackling don't seem to be that good either, he doesn't seem to be a creator, he doesn't seem to be a ball-winner... what is he apart from a bag of energy?
Poakey Posted 15 August 2012 Posted 15 August 2012 Compare and contrast him, a lower league player, ignoring it with maturity, and Robert Green, former England goalkeeper, going mental last year. Good on Pokey. Hi

Danns is defo the weakest midfielder we have for passing but he works hard, can tackle, can beat a man and can score goals. He's very good at breaking up attacks. I personally think he'd be a better option away from home when we need to work harder to close the opposition. At home, i'd like to see James and Drinky

Looks like Drinky could step up this year which makes them a sensible partnership. James needs more competitive game time before he becomes an option.
