Captain... Posted 8 January 2013 Author Posted 8 January 2013 This. It's the placebo effect isn't it? If people believe that something will make them better, often it will and it can take all kind of forms - from a plethora of spiritual "experiences" to the more mundane wacky diets or simple purchases. Like James says, it takes a strong personality to sell it and the belief that what you are doing genuinely works (if you don't then surely you're a fraud?) The problem is, does it work? Is it The Emperor's New Clothes, where people will say, "hey, it's fantastic!" simply for fear of standing out? I feel it's a bit like much modern art, where what is needed is the ability to persuade people that what you're doing is actually very clever and has some deep and hidden meaning - rather like The Emperor's New Clothes I guess. Maybe in a secular society where people don't subscribe to religion, where the political leaders are no more inspiring and art has become trash pop aesthetic, people need something extra to motivate themselves? And for once Moosebrat has said something that makes sense. This is another concern of mine, I don't want to put doubts in her mind with my natural scepticism, because as you say, if she doesn't believe in what she is doing then she will become a fraud. She is currently working as an accountant and hates it, she is being dragged down by her job ad arguably needs a bit of "life coaching" herself, rather than me being all logical and cynical.
James. Posted 8 January 2013 Posted 8 January 2013 Has she considered doing what I would consider to be a far more credible use of similar skills such as counselling, psychology, etc?
Trav Le Bleu Posted 8 January 2013 Posted 8 January 2013 Has she considered doing what I would consider to be a far more credible use of similar skills such as counselling, psychology, etc? Not wanting to cast aspertions at Cap Shrap's Mrs, but the difference is this: Life coach - attend a few seminars, spend some money. Psychologist/counsellor - years at university, much hard graft and still spending money. Maybe I'm being cynical - it's my usual MO. Having said all that, and on top of everything previous in this thread, no life coach/psychologist/counsellor is a substitute for good friends.
whoareyaaa Posted 8 January 2013 Posted 8 January 2013 She's not paying to be a life coach she is paying to go to a 3 day seminar by the life coaching guru Tony Robbins, in a normal business you pay to attend training and some seminars, to be honest I am more concerned about it being a dodgy practice and aims to exploit the needy, than her paying for a seminar/training course and spending a lot of time and effort on it to become discredited when it is exposed as a big scam. This is basically what it is. This guy is making a mint, because he is good at talking and has mastered the craft so to speak. 50 x 3k = 150k not bad for 3 days of talking shit, he probably has tons of up-sells as well... he will tell you what you want to hear.
Captain... Posted 8 January 2013 Author Posted 8 January 2013 In interesting blog post I found: http://wongablog.co.uk/2006/06/02/life-coaching-and-how-i-was-seduced-by-nonsense/ It mentions NLP something else my girlfriend is very interested in.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 8 January 2013 Posted 8 January 2013 In interesting blog post I found: http://wongablog.co....ed-by-nonsense/ It mentions NLP something else my girlfriend is very interested in. Nigel Pearson's middle name isn't Lionel.
Captain... Posted 8 January 2013 Author Posted 8 January 2013 Nigel Pearson's middle name isn't Lionel. No it's fvcking as in NFP, NLP is neurolinguistic programming, not really sure what that means, I think it is some kind of mind control, but I'm not afraid she'll use it on me, I'm pretty much a perfect boyfriend.
Zingari Posted 8 January 2013 Posted 8 January 2013 In interesting blog post I found: http://wongablog.co....ed-by-nonsense/ It mentions NLP something else my girlfriend is very interested in. do you mean this ? http://en.wikipedia....tic_programming discredited !!
Trav Le Bleu Posted 8 January 2013 Posted 8 January 2013 As I read the blog (yes, I pay attention for it might seem otherwise) NLP seems to be roundly debunked. Like Jedi powers, the Force can have a strong influence on the weak-minded.
Captain... Posted 8 January 2013 Author Posted 8 January 2013 I've actually just had a very long conversation with her on the phone, and she shares my doubts and scepticisms, but she still wants to work with people and help people and not be stuck behind a computer all day. I suggested becoming a counsellor, but maybe a little too strongly and now she feels like I'm forcing her to be a counsellor, but I really don't care what she does as long as she is happy, is anyone here a counsellor?
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 8 January 2013 Posted 8 January 2013 I run Roo Fox apprenticeships, virtually you pay me money and we go to the pub, sporting events and the races. It teaches you how to be a proper aussie bloke Any takers?
Monk Posted 8 January 2013 Posted 8 January 2013 Maybe you should hire a life coach to help decide if to pay for a life coaching course?? Check out Pamela Slim - author in that field and has a lot of great content.

David Icke is worth a fooking fortune,1000s go and see him ll over the globe listening to him talk about being run by lizards for 8 hours, now I don't know If he had a master plan years ago after getting bored of grandstand, but I take my hat off to him.

Check out Pamela Slim - author in that field and has a lot of great content. It's not so much about paying for the course, it is about whether it is actually a real valid profession and whether these courses are actually worth it, or just a bunch of baloney, I've been doing some research and for the price of a course, which involves reading lots of books and a few weekend seminars, you can study full time for a year.

SOCCERROO FOX Posted 8 January 2013 Posted 8 January 2013 i assume any sort of style training is not included!! You will have to enrol to find out. On enrolment a pair of thongs, footy shorts, aussie flag and southern cross tatoo will be supplied.

Rincewind Posted 8 January 2013 Posted 8 January 2013 Anyone see the Darren program where he gave somebody faith? Much the same thing. It may be a genuine profession but it takes a certain kind of person to do it. If the person believe they are doing it mainly to help their patent/victim they will be brought to earth quickly. I would say yo have to be willing to take as much money from anyone willing to pay it. A physiologist or psychiatrist would do a similar job in a way. They give their patients self belief and confidence. One of many ways less expensive to acheive this. I havegained more confidence by being surrounded by different type of people. It is going to cost a lot more before she is ready )(or told she is ready) to break out on her own. Her mentor will not want her taking his potential punters.
Mack Posted 9 January 2013 Posted 9 January 2013 You misses sounds like she is at a crossroads in her life. Reached a certain age, realized working for the man is only doing the man good, feels like she is wasting her life. And it's those sort of vulnerable people who are looking for a purpose and meaning that slime like this life coach fella earn so much money from. Thinking can become and expensive business if it leads you to the door of people like him. If I was you I'd spend the money on starting your own business. If that doesn't suit then look to re train at evening school into something you can become qualified in that will give the helping others satisfaction. But please remember, not only do a lot of people not want to be helped but many will also be ungrateful, rude and wont thank you if you try. Helping others is a very romantic notion, but in reality this world is a selfish self centered place where most would pawn their own parents to get up life's ladder.
RobHawk Posted 9 January 2013 Posted 9 January 2013 Is shes interested in counselling, at our uni we run part time courses. She would be looking at 2 year HE Certificate at approx £700/ yr and then a yrs diploma course at £2000. Obviously shes not going to wanna move to Swansea but the point is for the same price as that 3 days she could do a 3 yr part time course at a uni and get a Diploma in something that is real and worthwhile!

I went to one of his talks and I think all this lizard people stuff is vastly over-played. I wasn’t present for the whole talk as it was a bit too long but I never heard it mentioned His talk was mostly about media manipulation, international banking cartels, NWO, Bilderbergers , big brother style intrusion etc Most of his stuff is accepted as pretty mainstream now as is evident by the larger audiences he now speaks too, whereas 10 years ago he couldn’t fill a phone box. His son did a nice acoustic guitar solo in the interval too edit; i was actually quite surprised that the audience were mainly young professional or studenty types as i was expecting it to be mainly old hippies etc

Zingari Posted 9 January 2013 Posted 9 January 2013 Everyone took the piss after his Wogan appearance ,but who's laughing now . I think he was a bit weird back then and he admitted as much in his talk. He was going through a transitional stage where all his beliefs about how the world was run were shattered and he was blurting out some strange old new age shite. But he's learned a lot and done some fantastic research and he's much more in control of himself now. He seems to actually enjoy every minute on stage and it must be absolutely grueling schedule Well worth going to see IMO
Trav Le Bleu Posted 9 January 2013 Posted 9 January 2013 Is anyone here a counsellor? No, but does this help?
