FuriousFox46 Posted 2 April 2013 Posted 2 April 2013 I'm going to write a blog on this topic and just wanted anyone's views, opinions or experiences of the matter. Thanks
BHAFC Braders Posted 2 April 2013 Posted 2 April 2013 Given the video of us at Forest this has sparked up the whole question yet again , interesting poll running on our board at the moment http://www.northstandchat.com/showthread.php?275199-Are-you-offended-by-the-gay-taunts-from-opposing-fans&highlight=Homophobia
Simmo86 Posted 2 April 2013 Posted 2 April 2013 Given the video of us at Forest this has sparked up the whole question yet again , interesting poll running on our board at the moment http://www.northstan...ight=Homophobia What video?
Lamby Posted 2 April 2013 Posted 2 April 2013 They should just think of it as banter. Do northern clubs take offence when us southern clubs chant "we pay your benefits", the dirty northern bastards song or sing the incest song? No. Same as that really.
acooling08 Posted 2 April 2013 Posted 2 April 2013 Given the video of us at Forest this has sparked up the whole question yet again , interesting poll running on our board at the moment http://www.northstan...ight=Homophobia Does your boyfriend know you're here?
Corky Posted 2 April 2013 Posted 2 April 2013 I don't believe there is real hatred towards homosexuals in football grounds, I think it's more a cheap shot seen as "banter" and generalising rather than specifics, but I don't find it particularly pleasant. Having said that, I've only heard it in relation to Brighton matches, so I'm not sure how widespread it is.
purpleronnie Posted 2 April 2013 Posted 2 April 2013 I find it amusing that fans think it will piss fans off, who gives a shit about being called gay? idiots. I guess it depends on what the chant is, could easily offend someone who is gay.
theessexfox Posted 2 April 2013 Posted 2 April 2013 'You're a town full of gays and I hope you die of AIDS' isn't banter, however.
Haydos Posted 2 April 2013 Posted 2 April 2013 I find it amusing that fans think it will piss fans off, who gives a shit about being called gay? idiots. I guess it depends on what the chant is, could easily offend someone who is gay. Missing the point, no? This is why footballers can't come out and live their lives.
purpleronnie Posted 2 April 2013 Posted 2 April 2013 Missing the point, no? This is why footballers can't come out and live their lives. No you're missing mine. I was refering to rival fans singing it about other fans not footballers, homophobia should be stamped out.

But is it comparable? The inbred and benefit chants are untrue whereas they're actually gay fans at football matches. ----------------------------------------- What about individual comments from fans such as 'nancy' or 'poof' at a player or official
Haydos Posted 2 April 2013 Posted 2 April 2013 No you're missing mine. I was refering to rival fans singing it about other fans not footballers, homophobia should be stamped out. I don't know what I read in your post that made me quote you Either way, it's just another unfunny subject for chants. I think I stopped calling people gay as an insult when I was about 10. Football fans are football fans though so I doubt it will go away.

Fox92 Posted 2 April 2013 Posted 2 April 2013 Read yesterday Brighton are set to name and shame clubs that sing homophobic songs.
FuriousFox46 Posted 2 April 2013 Author Posted 2 April 2013 Leicester are one of 29 clubs supporting Football vs. Homophobia along with; Arsenal, Aston Villa, Birmingham, Blackburn, Bristol Rovers, Carlisle, Crewe, Crystal Palace, Dagenham & Redbridge, Doncaster, Exeter, Gillingham, Huddersfield, Ipswich, Leyton Orient, Liverpool, Man City, MK Dons, Millwall, Northampton, Norwich, Peterborough, Preston, Sheff Wed, Tranmere, West Brom and West Ham
BHAFC Braders Posted 3 April 2013 Posted 3 April 2013 Read yesterday Brighton are set to name and shame clubs that sing homophobic songs. ..... as every single club pretty much!!! As far as I'm concerned it doesn't bother me (but I'm straight so it wouldn't I guess), it's fairly unoriginal if clubs are singing it to get a reaction as bar a couple of clubs "we can see you sucking cock" and stuff like "H.I.V" from Millwall you pretty much know to expect "Does your boyfriend know you're here?","We can see you holding hands" and "town full of faggots", Cardiff get "sheepshaggers" , Norwich "inbreds" etc... some see it as banter , some get offended (more often on behalf of others) guessing modern football must be open for all and no doubt parents wanting to protect naive youngsters against stereotypes and moral taboos and no nos I guess. I'm guessing I'm lucky that I know better then to believe such stereotypes but you do get the occasional idiot who believes what they've sung and go too far. if the governing bodies are working that prejudice shouldn't be part of the game then it ALL should be cut out rather then nitpicking at it.
Captain... Posted 3 April 2013 Posted 3 April 2013 It is a fine line, and as with racism, you risk doing more harm than good, by being overly sensitive. Calling a player a poof for not getting stuck in, is it any different to calling him a girl, or a pussy? Do any women get offended by that? In fact I have heard women calling a footballer a girl or a Jessy, and I could easily imagine a gay football supporting friend of mine calling a player a poof, for being a poof. These words have rightly or wrongly adopted these meanings and whilst it is a generally known meaning, then it will still be used and making them taboo will just add to their strength. I think any reference to AIDs or HIV is bang out of order though, likewise deliberately targeting a footballer as with Sol Campbell, that is different.

Corky Posted 3 April 2013 Posted 3 April 2013 Blimey, looking at Hux's report, Bristol City appear to be the most prolific in terms of chants.
Captain... Posted 3 April 2013 Posted 3 April 2013 Brighton's report We should put that in the new chants thread, there are some good ones in there...
theessexfox Posted 3 April 2013 Posted 3 April 2013 BHASC has reported to Leicester City FC in the past who didn’t accept that it was anything but banter. With this mind set BHASC didn’t see that we could achieve anything else at this time.
linemakers Posted 3 April 2013 Posted 3 April 2013 Brighton fans have complained that they are getting homophobic abuse at home and away matches by at least 72% of opposition fans. Is this a case of just banter by away fans, the same as northern fans get targeted as having no jobs, Cardiff and Derby fans being sheep shaggers or cov/ forest fans being inbred. Are we going to get to the stage when any banter with opposition fans is going to upset someone or some group, so to protect that person or group the clubs are fined and ordered to stop fans from banter. I think it's right to stop any racist chants or homophobic chants against a player, but banter to the opposition is just banter.
theessexfox Posted 3 April 2013 Posted 3 April 2013 There's a thread for this in the General Football and Sport forum. How are homosexuals in the crowd at Brighton going to feel? Very uncomfortable?
foxfanazer Posted 3 April 2013 Posted 3 April 2013 Think it's all tongue in cheek (no pun intended ) Most football fans expect a bit of banter (shudders at using that word)
