Homophobia in Football

Recommended Posts

Yes they may be uncomfortable but unless they have a sign above them saying I'm gay, it's not targeted at them directly, where as say " you fat b*stard" is more than likely at a fan. Are we going down the path where in the end any banter could upset someone so no banter is tolerated

Brighton fans have complained that they are getting homophobic abuse at home and away matches by at least 72% of opposition fans. Is this a case of just banter by away fans, the same as northern fans get targeted as having no jobs, Cardiff and Derby fans being sheep shaggers or cov/ forest fans being inbred.

Are we going to get to the stage when any banter with opposition fans is going to upset someone or some group, so to protect that person or group the clubs are fined and ordered to stop fans from banter.

I think it's right to stop any racist chants or homophobic chants against a player, but banter to the opposition is just banter.

When people bring AIDs and HIV into it, then it is going to far, fair play to Brighton for making a stand, but they need to make sure they are targeting genuine homophobia and not a bit of fun between fans. One of the reports was of a player rubbing his backside in front of the fans... Is that homophobia, or Brighton fans looking to take offence?

Surprisingly the player in question actually used to play for us , in true Arsene Wenger style I completely missed it (was watching the game) wasn't until I got home and read it on our board that I even knew it happened.

Any videos of it? Was it in a really suggestive way? Was he sucking his finger and cheekily looking over his shoulder and winking at the same time? Or was it more of a wiping snot off his hands after a sneeze type rub? If I saw a player rubbing his backside in front of me, I wouldn't take it as a homophobia, just cold hands or arse.

lol Sadly not , From the way it was put he missed an absolute sitter in front of the north stand , normal replies etc... and he did it to get a reaction I think.

If you're going Brighton by car on Saturday don't worry about parking, No one dares bend over long enough to paint the double yellow lines.

Harmless fun or homophobia?

Birmingham (A) - “Go home you qayers†- What the **** is a qayer and why is it homophobic?

Bristol City (A) - “The referee’s a gay boy†- Thats not aimed at Brighton fans!!

Blackburn (A) - Two fans attacked outside the ground - Action = n/a - What??? You moan and bitch about chants but when 2 fans are attacked outside the ground you do nothing?

Having read the report i see most of those chants as mindless and unimaginative and wouldn't encourage it myself! But i also think the report is a joke and comes across quite petty! At home games they seem to want to ban the fans of other clubs because they know their club take it seriously but at away games its the clubs fault for not monitoring properly! It's like they want to report things and for change to be made but only when it suits them!

Personally, i don't think this is the report that will make any real change!

Well it's not, because they aren't.

Brighton has a well-known gay population, that is factual, all the others are stereotypes that mostly aren't true or exaggerated.

Brighton having or not having a gay population is irrelevant.

What makes the chanting offensive is the implication that being gay is a negative worth mocking.

Defending the chanting by comparing it to mocking Derby or Cov fans is almost equally offensive, indirectly, because you're implying that homosexuality is an issue relative to incest or bestiality and that it's just as open for abuse.

There's a list of all the times they've been "abused" this season. We are on there. We will probably be on there again after this weekend. Personally I think they should just get on with it, there fans have made references to Leicester being "multi-cultural" before and no team's fans are without sin. Those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

No-one has done more to hold back equality in this country than the Daily Mail. So the fact they have ran this report and they are getting on their moral high ground is very strange.

We should chant other things though, the homophobic Brighton stuff is boring now. Lets just all move on from it.

We did, we took it a step further than what it says we did on there though

We've been "reported" for chanting "we can see you holding hands" How the **** is that homophobic chanting?

Posted

How is it not? It's a light one but it's still homophobic.

People might of been holding hands for all you know. It's a joke, a bit like "we pay your benefits" sung to the northern clubs, they don't report it and get all up in arms about it. It's playing on the stereotypical image of Brighton, nothing wrong with that.

Racist chanting heard, "Your manager's black, your manager's black........" How would you feel? Hopefully you wouldn't have an opinion. For all you know the chanting may be aimed at the manager of the local Tesco Supermarket sat in the opposite stand of the ground.

You know that will never happen

No it's not. Brighton were chating "we've ****ed you up the arse" when beating Palarse, so does that mean they should report themselves for homophobia?

If you're so deluded that you think that 'We can see you holding hands' is meant in any other way than a derogatory one, then it's little wonder that you're hated on both this forum and your own.
