Cultural subdivisions of kids have been kicking the shit out of each other since fashion began. Every generation has it's own mods and rockers. Chavs and emos might be the most pathetic yet but it doesn't really make it any worse an issue.

But in all seriousness, if these folks are being attacked because they dress differently, then in the interests of freedom of expression the fuzz should be looking at it. Not because they're different, but because it's a potential source of criminal cases and that's their job. If people want to dress like that and listen to (shit) music they should be able to do that without being afraid of getting a kicking.

As Finn says, this is hardly a new phenomenon.

PS. Who actually is the 'ordinary working man'?

I'm sure that's all great but there was a police chap on the radio earlier comparing committing a crime against a goth with racism. If you're gonna wear shit clothes expect to get picked on. Simple as that.

Fair enough, but on the same note the police have got to be ready to do their jobs and collar the folks who do that. And seeing as it has become a more prevalent problem recently it's probably going to need more police time and resources to handle.

You're right - this isn't about race, it's just about an increased amount of assaults that need to be dealt with like any other. As I said before, people should be free to wear what they like (legally) in this country without the fear of someone giving them a beating for it. We don't do that, we're no better than various repressive countries around the world.

You could go on forever adding new groups to the list of special cases.

If you’re attacked it’s the severity of the attack that should determine the seriousness of the crime, nothing else.

One might argue that while you cannot choose your race, you certainly can chose not to wear pink fluffy moon boots when you're an overweight 40-year-old man and if you do insist on doing so, you shouldn't be surprised when people see you as a target.

Agree with this. As I've said before, we're all human.

However if there is a larger number of a particular demographic being attacked, the police should devote a larger proportion of it's resources to that demographic accordingly.

Who are you to decide what makes someone a target?

What if the world decides that you dress like "a target" and picks on you?

Again, your post suggests that it is OK or even correct to pick on people who are different or whom you don't like for whatever reason.

I'm as adverse to "guyliner" or pink moon boots as the next man, but if someone else wants to wear stuff or believe stuff which is within the law and harms no one, then I say let them do it.
