Gay marriage is officially legal in the UK after the Queen gave royal assent to the new laws, paving the way for the first same-sex weddings by next summer.

The Queen gave her approval to the Bill – one of the most radical pieces of social legislation of her reign – this afternoon.

It opens the way for the first legally recognised same-sex weddings to take place in England and Wales by next summer and brings the centuries-old understanding of marriage as being solely between a man and a woman to an end.

Many MPs took to Twitter to say they were "delighted" with the news. Mike Weatherley, Tory MP for Hove and Portslade, said it had been "completely at odds with an open and democratic society to exclude gay couples from the important institution of marriage".

Baroness Thornton, shadow equalities minister in the House of Lords, said there was a "huge 'hear, hear' when the Lord Speaker announced royal assent", followed by "lots of smiles and cheerfulness".

Earlier this week, peers gave their assent to the third reading of the Government’s same-sex marriage bill without a formal vote after a short debate in the Lords. They also backed plans for a review of pension arrangements for gay couples.

At the time, Baroness Stowell, the Government spokesman who steered the bill through the Lords, told a chamber packed with peers wearing pink carnations, that it was an “historic†achievement.

But opponents accused the Government of using a parliamentary “bulldozer†to speed the change through.

The passage of the Bill brings an end to one of the most acrimonious debates of recent years which has divided the Conservative party and, at times, pitted Church against State.

The Coalition for Marriage, the group which orchestrated opposition to the Bill, is now set to transform itself from a single-issue campaign into what could be one of the most powerful lobbying groups in the country.

The C4M has built up a database of around 700,000 supporters through its petition against the redefinition of marriage.

Its leaders now believe they have enough support to influence the outcome of the 2015 election.

They have compiled a list of 39 of the most marginal seats they plan to target and in which enough people signed the C4M petition to suggest they could swing the election result.

They plan to challenge candidates of all parties to back a list of commitments to introduce new legal protections for workers such as teachers and registrars who hold to a traditional line on marriage.

They will also be campaigning to open up civil partnerships to allow family carers and unmarried siblings to benefit from the same inheritance tax exemptions as married couples.

Moose is fantasizing again.

But why?  How anyone wouldn't want equality is beyond me.

It denies a potential child either a father or mother?

Don't know really, but the old statement of 'I just dont think its right' is for me... It has turned what was moral wrong into a civil right, and what's stopping people from marrying their immediate family now? Surely that should be made legal because of equality?

Slippery slope fallacy.

Just because this law has been passed, doesn't mean that other related laws would automatically follow.

This whole argument has been over the semantics of one word that despite predating it has somehow got tied up in the web of organised religion in any case.

I think two men putting their erections into each others bums for sexual pleasure is...

Well marriage should put a stop to all that sex for pleasure nonsense.

Don't see the fuss, it's two consenting adults, why not?

Good move from Call me Dave as well, removes the 'Homopobic Tories' card from the Liberal deck.

People will be fcuking kids and animals in 200 years anyway. Peter Tatchell will be delighted.

Adoption is a different matter and the sick fcukers who throw unknowing kids into relationships with two blokes at a young age just to satisfy their own perverted political stance will hopefully all one day get whats coming to them.

I grew up in a small village where men were men and sheep were frightened, this kind of thing to me is just moral and social degradation.

I would like you to respect my views on said matter.
