SystonFox Posted 5 August 2013 Posted 5 August 2013 When I was 22 I had a 206 GTi in metallic blue. Ladies swamped round me and thought I had a huge penis to match my 2.0L engine. How wrong they were
Guest Foxin_mad Posted 6 August 2013 Posted 6 August 2013 The BMW 1 series is an awful car, it looks crap and drives pretty awful for a hatchback all round. Practically every hatchback on the market is better than that awful car. If you want VW engines with slightly cheaper maintenance the Seat Leon SC is pretty much a Golf but a lot cheaper to own/run. I would not touch French cars as they a generally beyond crap in terms of engines, build quality and electronics, they always look fairly good so temp a fair few people.
Bettsj2 Posted 7 August 2013 Posted 7 August 2013 At 22 probably best not to go too petrol heady as you'll just get pulled over loads and the insurance will be scandelous. Try a Honda S2000 or BMW Z4.
Monk Posted 7 August 2013 Posted 7 August 2013 Have you considered leasing? I got a Qashqai on a 2 yr lease recently and it works out at £200 a month. Cheap as chips. No maintenance, tax, mot to pay.
Bobby Hundreds Posted 7 August 2013 Posted 7 August 2013 Don't get an Audi. They make you drive like a bellend from what I've witnessed.
Jon the Hat Posted 7 August 2013 Posted 7 August 2013 Don't get an Audi. They make you drive like a bellend from what I've witnessed. You are just jealous of the busy and important people in Audi's and the hurry they are in to get to their important business, which casts a sorry reflection on you who has no place to go or people who are waiting to see you.
AoWW Posted 7 August 2013 Posted 7 August 2013 Don't get an Audi. They make you drive like a bellend from what I've witnessed. I want an Audi. I have no problem whatsoever with being a bellend. And, yes, I am busy and I do have important business!
Basingstoke Fox Posted 7 August 2013 Posted 7 August 2013 I'm looking to buy a new (not brand new) car over the next couple of months, and just wondered if anyone can give me a bit of advice. I'm 22 and been driving a few years now, and fancy a new car. I want to spend between 6 and 10 grand ideally, and want something decent, an Audi 3, Golf GTI, 1 series or something similar. I drive around 350 motorway miles per week. Any advice on past experiences, etc? I'm also 22 and had a Mk4 GTi for just over a year. It was a great car but definitely thirsty on petrol, especially if you want to enjoy yourself in it abit. It wasn't too much of an issue for me until I got my 2nd half season ticket last season. I've now Golf GT TDi 2.0. It's honestly not too much of a step down on performance but it's much more economical. The interior of these cars is lovely, the 3 door models look good and I find that it's a great all round car in terms of performance and economy. I'd recommend that or something similar like a Leon or a Focus. I'd steer clear of Astra SRi's though. I know a few people who have had severe issues with these at just 3-4 years old (outside the warranty if you didn't buy from new). Hope you find what you're looking for.
Ozwin Posted 7 August 2013 Posted 7 August 2013 Is there any benefit to buying a car before you pass? Like it'll just be sitting on the front for a few months, I take it you can't buy and leave it in the forecourt until you need it?
Larry_LCFC Posted 7 August 2013 Posted 7 August 2013 At 17 I had an S reg 1.4 SE MK4 Golf. At 19 I moved onto a 05 reg 1.6 SE MK5 Golf. Now at 21 ive got a 09 reg 2.0 BMW 3 series. All been really good cars. (Apart from the BMW which is currently being fixed at god knows what price). Never had a problem with the golfs. Nice cars to drive.
ADK Posted 7 August 2013 Posted 7 August 2013 If you're new to driving i'd get something super cheap and in a low insurance group. If you do lots of miles i'd get something that does 60MPG or more and won't need alot to maintain.
Soar Fox Posted 7 August 2013 Posted 7 August 2013 Going to look at a BMW X5 on Saturday. Anyone on here had one before? A couple of people have told me the road tax is about £400 a year.
stix Posted 8 August 2013 Posted 8 August 2013 Going to look at a BMW X5 on Saturday. Anyone on here had one before? A couple of people have told me the road tax is about £400 a year. Depends what year it is. Any after a 51 plate then yeah, up to £400 road tax. You looking at the 3.0d? They're heavy cars mate I don't reckon you'd get much over 35 around town. My mate has a 530d and he is less than impressed with the mpg. Mind you, I can't talk....I drive a 5.0 V8 !

Looking at a 56 plate, 3.0 diesel. My dad has got a porche cayenne and he gets around 34 mpg. It's better when going on longer motorway journeys though.

It all depends on what you can afford obviously. I get 13mpg in mine 22ish on a run, but I'm ok with that as I don't do mega miles in it. X5s are nice, maintaining it might be a ballache though. You'd probably be looking at £2-250 a corner for decent tyres on it. Especially the rears.
Leeds Fox Posted 9 August 2013 Author Posted 9 August 2013 Have you considered leasing? I got a Qashqai on a 2 yr lease recently and it works out at £200 a month. Cheap as chips. No maintenance, tax, mot to pay. Yeah I have, but I'd be doing in excess of 13,000 miles per year, as far as I'm aware, most lease deals limit the annual mileage you can do, and charge for extra. Is that the case for you?
Orkneyfox Posted 9 August 2013 Posted 9 August 2013 Just been directed to look at a Dacia Sandero - any one got any knowledge of these?
SystonFox Posted 10 August 2013 Posted 10 August 2013 Just been directed to look at a Dacia Sandero - any one got any knowledge of these? Have they finally been released in the uk now? Top gear lads will be thrilled!
Monk Posted 10 August 2013 Posted 10 August 2013 Yeah I have, but I'd be doing in excess of 13,000 miles per year, as far as I'm aware, most lease deals limit the annual mileage you can do, and charge for extra. Is that the case for you? Got mine from nationwide vehicle contracts. You just choose your mileage when they price it up. Easy peasy.
MooseBreath Posted 10 August 2013 Posted 10 August 2013 Always amazed at how many people buy cars on finance. I read it's something like 85% of new cars in the UK are bought on finance. If you can't afford to buy the car outright then you can't afford the car.

If you can't afford to buy the car outright then you can't afford the car. thats a bit of a black and white view. i could afford 800 quid a month on finance if i wanted. but that doesnt mean i have 30k sat lying around to buy a car outright. you get paid monthly so why not pay for something monthly. i assume you dont own a house or if you do you are lucky enough to have not needed a mortgage.

Mortgages are slightly different because you're expecting/hoping for the asset to appreciate in value thus paying for the interest. Cars will always depreciate rapidly. Plus if you've got a decent deposit your mortgage rate should be relatively low. Some of the car finance rates I've seen have been around 12% - outrageous imo. I can see why people are tempted by the low-sounding monthly repayments, but for me paying thousands upon thousands of pounds over the years just to satisfy number plate envy is bad form, and many will regret it when they find out how poor you're going to be when you retire.
ADK Posted 10 August 2013 Posted 10 August 2013 I'm glad people do though, it keeps the used car market prices down.
