DennisNedry Posted 8 August 2013 Posted 8 August 2013 I remember a QI episode which discussed this, they sound like a right load of bumbling fools.

The Year Of The Fox Posted 8 August 2013 Posted 8 August 2013 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daWZPdSzEpY That's hilarious
Fox92 Posted 8 August 2013 Posted 8 August 2013 I'm quite interested in the train robbery. And let's face it, they all did that amount of time because they robbed from the government/state. Ronnie Biggs looking very old these days.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 8 August 2013 Posted 8 August 2013 Quite interesting to read about etc. Ronnie Biggs was hardly a big time player in it yet was made kind of a celebrity fugitive.
Webbo Posted 8 August 2013 Posted 8 August 2013 Ronnie Biggs is more famous for escaping from jail and avoiding extradition from Brazil than his part in the actual robbery.
ADK Posted 8 August 2013 Posted 8 August 2013 I thought this was going to be about the cost of rail fares.

cambridgefox Posted 8 August 2013 Posted 8 August 2013 True story. My dad was stopped at I think Hemel Hempstead as he was studying there. He had a suitcase with him as he was travelling from Hemel back to Ely.At the station he was surrounded by police, hauled across the platform, then his suitcase was searched.Although they Didnt find anything they told him afterwards they thought he was concealing loot and part of the gang.He missed the last train home and as an apology the police drove him 60 miles to Ely as an apology.
Fox92 Posted 9 August 2013 Posted 9 August 2013 It is a shame the driver died. They didn't want that to happen hence they didn't carry weapons. It was brilliantly planned and so well executed. The battery wired to the red signal, and then the covering of the green signal. Very clever. It's one of those that you sort of applaud. As I said above, I am interested in it. I just couldn't imagine anything like that happening today. Watched a programme last night that claimed they had an insider feed them the information about time to rob it etc. it even said that the insider could have actually been on the train at the time, but working in another carridge. Not sure if its true, nobody even knows who he/she was. Never heard of it actually until yesterday, might only be someone thinking that?
absolutelegend Posted 9 August 2013 Posted 9 August 2013 It is a shame the driver died. err yes these guys get glorrified far too much for my taste

It is a shame that the murdering thieves killed the innocent driver while enirching themselves? It is cold blooded murder. No intention my arse. They had weapons alright.
Fox92 Posted 9 August 2013 Posted 9 August 2013 A shame? It is a shame that the murdering thieves killed the innocent driver while enirching themselves? It is cold blooded murder. No intention my arse. They had weapons alright. They only stole from the government. I've read about it, and watched things about it, many times. I don't think they intended to kill, in fact Dave Whitby also got rough treatment when they took over the train so I'm guessing Mills was the only one who put up a fight. Fair play for that as it was his cab. One documentary I watched even highlighted the rest of the gang weren't happy he got hit. The whole the robbery fascinates me, as it does many people. it was well planned and executed very well, which is why I think it gets the attention it does. The train is getting restored now, which would be good should it be on display to the public. edit: I think it's interesting, as well, because, this is like something from America. Robbing a train, is very wild west. All they needed was horses. Would people in '63 ever imagine to seeing a train robbery as big and as well executed as it was?
Trav Le Bleu Posted 9 August 2013 Posted 9 August 2013 It's all very well saying that they only stole from the government, but ultimately all theft, even big corporations, is theft from everyone because the cost of the theft is passed on to the public, especially in the case of the government. If the government had hundreds of millions or billions stolen from them today, then you could bet that there would be no tax cuts any time soon and maybe rises. Biggs and co. are not Robin Hood figures - they had no intention of enriching a downtrodden common man, only themselves.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 9 August 2013 Posted 9 August 2013 A shame? It is a shame that the murdering thieves killed the innocent driver while enirching themselves? It is cold blooded murder. No intention my arse. They had weapons alright. Well said, and very true. I heard some of the scum on the radio a couple of weeks ago. They DID have weapons. Murdering filth.
