ADK Posted 7 October 2013 Posted 7 October 2013 http://www.itv.com/news/calendar/update/2013-10-06/imans-willing-to-marry-girls-of-14-in-secret/ Doesn't exactly paint mosques in a good light, 18 out of 56 mosques would marry a 14 year old to an older man.
Harry - LCFC Posted 7 October 2013 Posted 7 October 2013 I'm wondering, is this behaviour actually justified in the Quran or is it motivated by something else?
MooseBreath Posted 7 October 2013 Posted 7 October 2013 Totally agree with the decision to delete my post. Highlights exactly how distasteful most people find this disgraceful practice.
The Doctor Posted 7 October 2013 Posted 7 October 2013 I'm wondering, is this behaviour actually justified in the Quran or is it motivated by something else? Quran not to my knowledge, hadiths (sub-text to give context though)... Narrated 'Aisha: that the Prophet married her when she was six years old and he consumated his marriage when she was nine years old, and then she remained with him for nine years (i.e., till his death). ... Sahih Bukhari 7:62:64 I'd say when your scripture says your prophet married a 6 year old and diddled her when she was 9 it's fairly easy to justify marrying off a 14 year old. Oh, and given El is going to come in and say it's a false hadith, it's also covered as such in: "Aisha said, "The Apostle of Allah married me when I was seven years old." (The narrator Sulaiman said: "Or six years."). "He had intercourse with me when I was 9 years old." Abu-Dawud 2:2116

Rincewind Posted 7 October 2013 Posted 7 October 2013 Watching Panorama about the girl that was shot for going school. A very bright and wonderful person. It must be very difficult to speak out against the millitants even though they are in the minority. She said Islam means peace

Quick, where's the brush and carpet? They're being investigated for it so it's not being ignored. I do agree with you that it is quite ridiculous how religious communities are sometimes given autonomy to act as they please. Laws must be applied universally.
Rincewind Posted 7 October 2013 Posted 7 October 2013 I very much doubt that they are being given autonomy. It is jusy that it is a rare event and when the media picks up on it somebody will say that it has been going on all over the place in secret and that makes better headlines.

Wasn't referring to this event specifically and yes I do think the media sensationalise these events. Was just responding to someone about how it can be frustrating when religious communities do seem to be given autonomy in some situations.
The People's Hero Posted 7 October 2013 Posted 7 October 2013 I find plenty of things in modern, day to day life to get annoyed, pis sed off or irritated by. I find it odd that some people seek to find annoyance by prying in this way. I don't mean to condone the behaviour or to suggest I agree with it, but its like making effort to find out if mugging of OAPs is an issue in Papua New Guinea and then getting upset by it. Thank god none of the more traditionally 'British' adopted and accepted religious clergy would ever be involved in anything as unsavoury as sexual abuse of children - and its a bloody good job the crusades never happened.
DennisNedry Posted 7 October 2013 Posted 7 October 2013 It's their culture. It's racist to criticise it.
The People's Hero Posted 7 October 2013 Posted 7 October 2013 It's their culture. It's racist to criticise it. Its not racist, its just all about pointless. I doubt any culture or religion would modify to appease you or to save your feelings - and especially not Islam! Lets not get all prissy about it - but equally why pretend that what we think matters?
Guest Bilo Posted 7 October 2013 Posted 7 October 2013 Catholic priests haven't exactly shown a reticence to fvck choirboys of the same age before either.Religion is crap.

We should probably all get really upset about this - and make sure its really vocal - or really visible on here. It makes us better people. Really it does.
Guest Bilo Posted 7 October 2013 Posted 7 October 2013 We should probably all get really upset about this - and make sure its really vocal - or really visible on here. It makes us better people. Really it does. I can't even be bothered to make an effort on this thread. El will call it all a conspiracy and say the Imams aren't real Muslims. Moose will tell us all that every male Muslim in Britain shags a pubescent in between bomb making classes and slaughtering a kitten. The FT left will tell Moose he's being a cleft. The FT right will accuse the FT left of sweeping it under the carpet. The mods will frantically delete the more idiotic posts. The story will come out as having been falsified or grossly exaggerated in some way or the thread will be closed.
The People's Hero Posted 7 October 2013 Posted 7 October 2013 I'm waiting for Rincewind's 'haiku' about it which: a) Invariably simply won't satisfy the criteria of a haiku b) Will make no sense. Sod that actually, I want a limerick. Best limerick about teen-hungry imams wins (that prize may be personal jihad, just don't mention the prophet's name....)

I doubt any culture or religion would modify to appease you or to save your feelings - and especially not Islam! Lets not get all prissy about it - but equally why pretend that what we think matters? Listen, what I've been taught by our very left wing education system is that: a) We must respect other cultures. This practice is not savage or backward, just different. We are not superior. b) Who's to say marrying 14 year old children off against their will is wrong? I respect Muslims and their views on this matter.
Orkneyfox Posted 7 October 2013 Posted 7 October 2013 There was an old iman of Devizes Who wanted to ruin girls liveses He married them off to some old Arab toff Then back into his mosque he would diveses. I know, it's not Spike Milligan but I only took 2 minutes on it! And for the record I think that as it is illegal here they should not be doing it. There are a wide variety of marriage age laws, with the average being 18 and quite a few higher. . The USA will allow marriage under 16 in some states with special circumstances, as will Denmark. I'm waiting for Rincewind's 'haiku' about it which: a) Invariably simply won't satisfy the criteria of a haiku b) Will make no sense. Sod that actually, I want a limerick. Orkneyfox Posted 7 October 2013 Posted 7 October 2013 Haiku,(sort of). Some Imman breaks rules Girls taken, we are not fools Childhood stolen, tears.
Rincewind Posted 7 October 2013 Posted 7 October 2013 What is the criteria for a haiku? There are many forms. Mine are 5-7-5 syllables. Check if you want to see that the criteria is satisfied. http://quill2ink2paper.weebly.com/haikus.html This is not a subject that I want to write a haiku about.

I did say "sort of", it is 5/7/5 if you slur it a bit. In fact I edited it a bit so maybe fits the 5/7/5 metre better, though there is much literature on the topic of the correct form and subject matter for Haiku's both in their traditional and their modern formats. On your other point I don't think poetry should be barred from dealing with difficult subjects. My "pseudo haiku" may be sh*te poetry but it is hardly a laugh a minute.
ADK Posted 7 October 2013 Author Posted 7 October 2013 I'm slightly disappointed by the apathy shown by people in this topic.
The People's Hero Posted 8 October 2013 Posted 8 October 2013 It's not apathy though is it? It's just people refusing to get hysteric about some dubiously researched article with a trouble causing agenda. Are we measuring how morally good we are by our level of outage? If so I can assure you I'm absolutely livid. I'm considering writing a strongly worded letter to Allah and tutting loudly at every person I see in the street with a beard Look who outraged and good I am! This is fun.
