The Smiths

I picked up Marr's new record the other week when it was released.

I've got into it now after a few plays, didn't really like it that much at first, a few decent tracks on it although doesn't sound like anything he's done previously. I was expecting a great riff, like he's given us throughout his career (This Charming Man/The Messenger/Easy Money etc) but nothing like that really.

Anybody else bought it?

It's been released!

People are FURIOUS with the production but I think that's just because the live one has been knocking around for a while and we've got used to how that sounds

Think its a pretty cool track. Mozza always has something to offer.

Alain Whyte has left Morrissey's band again having only just rejoined last year after a 16 year break, which seems like a terrible shame to me, from both a guitar playing and songwriting perspective.

He's been replaced by Carmen Vanderburg who I'm not familiar with but is very talented from what I've seen. Seems a pretty blues-ey guitarist so maybe not an obvious choice but will be interesting to see what she brings to the mix

Her guitar work with Bones UK is fairly unremarkable but often it's the understated and economical guitar players are ultimately the most expressive. They know how to play for the song, not overplay or for themselves and therefore how to meaningfully contribute to a band dynamic. In short, they know their place and given an ego the size of Morrisey's, that's important.

Boz Boorer's still in the fold, yes? I think she'll fit in well.

She's obviously a serious musician (there's TONS of interviews and content about her as a guitarist) but her playing didn't grab me immediately, but then again a lot of technically brilliant blues type guitarists don't either. I expect she'll find what's asked of her a piece of piss, she was in Jeff Beck's band after all.

Boz Boorer was replaced in the live line up last year, by Alain Whyte. no explanation or announcement, which is a bit weird after literally 30 years of service but par for the course really. Probably completely banal reasons but just leads to daft speculation about what's gone on - a bit like at LCFC

Never saw The Smiths (only 12 when they split), but saw Andy Rourke play in Badly Drawn Boy's band and was disproportionately excited by that.

Just realised that despite him being one of my all time heroes I've never seen Johnny Marr. May or may not do anything about that

Hugely creative bass player and through placing his unique signature upon the music was a significant element of the band's defining sound. The perfect anchor and accompaniment to Marr's intricate, innovative and explorative guitar playing. I too had no idea about his illness. The onset of pancreatic cancer tends to be very aggressive and rapid. By all accounts, a very gentle warm person. RIP.

Any fans on here?

If yes what's your favourite of their songs?

Anybody been to see them live?

My favourite songs are Bigmouth strikes again and There is a light that never goes out

Saw them twice, Meat is Murder then Queen is Dead tour at De Montford Hall…superb live. Favourite songs Jeanne, This night has opened my eyes and Girl Afraid. Their B sides were always as good as the actual singles, similar to the Jam.
